Up Early, Editing
There's nothing that will make you hate a topic more than having to edit a feature article about it. BLEARGH. Fuck you, induced pluripotent stem cells!

So Haider was going 140 km/h, at night, with heavy fog, in a populated area with crossroads situations and pedestrian crossings, where the allowed speed varies between 50 and 70 km/h. You can bet that this is going to get downplayed - it kind of ruins the heroic death when it turns out to have been death by sheer stupidity.

At least he did not have any passengers in the car or hit anyone else.

Sensing a trend here
One of the things I do not like about Western Horror (esp Cinema) besides the usual lack of imagination is the obsessive morality in them. Toke a bit? Monster is going to get you. Skinny dipping? Monster is going to get you. Have sex? Monster is going to get you. Lose your virginity while having sex? OY is that Monster going to get you.

I realise this is hardly a new trait. But at the same time it is not really that old in the long run of things. I am going to hazard a guess that the writers, assuming there are such things, of many of the slasher films grew up on Brothers Grimm based folk tales and not the original tales. Which is sort of a shame, they tended to be much bloodier in more realistic ways.

Of course then there are the Japanese films, but we shall get to those.

Maybe this way it'll work
Dear brain,

I love analysing TB and X. I really do. But, right now, I would like to sleep.

Thank you.

Yours,

Richard Morgan, The Steel Remains
I had this book recced to me as new, interesting fantasy. Lately I haven't had much luck with new fantasy, so I happily picked it up.

My luck hasn't turned yet.

Cut for spoilers )

I must apologize...
The internet died at my house, and it's been twenty-four hours and still counting. We're hoping it'll be back up by Monday, but no promises. I'm writing this entry on someone else's computer, just to let you know the following:

When the internet is no longer DEAD, there will be a surge of reviews. Scott Westerfeld's The Risen Empire would've been published Friday night, and Cherie Priest's Dreadful Skin would've been published today. If the internet doesn't come back until Monday, then there's likely to be a third review posted as well.

I'll try not to overwhelm your friends' lists TOO much, but I did want to apologize in advance. I promise, it's not my fault. ;)

Have a happy weekend! :)

Austrian football is something hard to explain to anyone outside the country. But it's really easy. Just remember two things:

1) As far as all Austrian football fans are concerned, there only ever was one game which matters, and that was Cordoba 1978 when the team beat Germany. 30 years later and it's still the proudest moment.

2) Färöer. The only people who know where this is located are people who actually live there, and Austrian football watchers. The tiny, 45,000 inhabitant island group of Färöer beat the Austrian team 1:0 in 1990. Today, it was supposed to be the big revenge for that embarrassment.

It ended 1:1. Trauma? Naaaah.

old meme time
I found an old meme on my lj I want to do again now :

01. Who are you?
02. Where on earth do you live?
03. What makes you happy?
04. Fandoms we share:
05. Do you enjoy reading my LJ and if so, why?
06. Interesting fact about you:
07. When and how did we 'meet'?
08. How well do you know me?
09. Describe me in one word:
10. What was your first impression upon meeting me?
11. Do you still think that way about me now?
12. What (or who -- this can be a character) reminds you of me?
13. If you could give me anything what would it be?
14. Favourite quote:
15. After answering all these question, do you want to ask me one in turn?
16. Are you going to put this on your LiveJournal and see what I say about you (if you haven't already)?

Yes, you guys are the ones doing all the work ^_^

Farmers Market Oddities
On my way to the farmers market today, a woman stopped to tell me that I was beautiful. I think the weather must be making people unusually giddy (it is a gorgeous day out).

After 2 minutes at the market, I started wheezing and damn-near had an asthma attack. I quickly got my shopping done (fresh milk! bacon! fresh eggs!) and bolted, and my breathing had eased by the time I was near home. I have no idea what it was at that end of the park that set me off. I hauled out my inhaler when I got home, and the breathing difficulties are gone. Still, a bit scary.

As a matter of idle curiosity
What would the ultimate Horror story have? That is, the one that would give you shivers and with the lights on well into the night.
