booking it through 2006
sometimes, it is about quantity

About:Countless times, I have heard friends complain that they simply don’t read as much as they used to when they were young and fancy-free. Many of us fondly recall plowing through book after book in our childhood, but no longer can make as much space in our lives to read simply for pleasure.

Is there a better motivator than some friendly competition?

This year, I want to challenge you (yes you, in the back with the hat - don’t think I can’t see you making that face) to read as many books as you can. That’s it. If you want to set a goal for the year, go ahead. You can keep that information private, or tell us and we’ll post it here so we can all cheer as you surpass it…or laugh as you get lost in the annals of Dostoyevsky. We’re not particular. Get ideas for new authors or genres to explore by seeing what other members are reading. You decide the appropriate pace for yourself. Read more in 2006 than you did in 2005. Get back in the habit!

The Basic Concept

As you finish a book, write an entry here stating that fact. And bam! You’re done. Don’t you feel accomplished? Please include in the subject line how many books you’ve completed so far in the competition. Include in the post the name of the work, the author, and (if applicable) the translator or editor. It’s that easy!

Any book or collection of stories/essays/poetry is fair game – length is not a factor here. However, don’t expect high praise for finishing Goodnight, Moon. Feel free to give a detailed review, but please at least let us know how much you enjoyed the book. You may use a standard rating system (one to five stars), or create one of your own (exactly how many monkeys was The Grapes of Wrath worth to you?). Spoiler-ish reviews and discussions must be marked as such and hidden behind an LJ-cut. Some of use still don’t know who murdered Roger Ackroyd, afterall.

Stuck in a book, unable to move forward, yet unwilling to admit defeat? Vent your spleen here. Find comfort in your bretheren. We’ve all been there.

Finally, check out [info]lovesbooks for some in-depth discussions of a monthly book selection.
