Book Launch
aduki independent press is thrilled to announce the launch of an exciting (and potentially controversial) new book. 'Stick this in your memory hole' is a brutally honest and bitingly funny discussion of the state of Australian politics and society in a tumultuous world. The author, Tristan Clark, is indicative of the growing dissent against government, and a shift in thinking from mainstream ideas and traditions. Join us for a drink to celebrate the launch of this book and fight back against the erosion of free speech and public debate in Australia. Thursday 1 November from 6.30 Caz Reitop’s Dirty Secrets 80 Smith Street, Collingwood vegan food generously supplied by Plush Pizza http://www.plushpizza.com For more information on 'Stick this in your memory hole', visit the aduki website: http://www.aduki.net.au | | Monday, August 22nd, 2005 | 7:01 pm [crypticdeity]

Bookclub options
I suggested to Lidia on Friday night that, due to the possibility of greater numbers at the next book club because of interstate Awesomefest visitors, we hold it at GMC - providing there's not a show on there that night. What do people think? Also are we going for the Thursday night? Or the last Sunday as usual? | | Saturday, September 4th, 2004 | 9:49 am [xapostate]

I'm gonna use this blog like it is some sort of online discussion group
I'm gonna use this blog like it is some sort of online discussion group I missed the book club for the sixth month in a row, but I have a really good excuse this time, Lygon Gellatti had just re-opened so we went there for a soy chocolate, pistachio, cherry, lemon sugar fix. It's also pretty emarrassing that I'm still reading the same book, which I actually started at Christmas. Book Club #7
So mega props to the Blythe Street house for hosting a really great bookclub last nite, everyone snacked on copious quantities of corn chip and dip and gorged ourselves on glorious, powdery, wonderful, gourmet turkish delight whilst talking the book talk and generally have a rad time. I wish I had recorded all the books but I forgot, so if the book clubbers present last night could please record them, that would be great! Anyway, it was a really awesome night and I cant wait to do it again...some new ideas for next time were discussed briefly, so I'll post them up here so everyone can contribute further. Next months bookclub proposed for the 30th September (that's a Thursday, kids) in anticipation of some interstate kid participation (due to AWESOMEFEST!). What does everybody think of this? I think it would only be a one off, but also a great way to get geared up for the fucking great weekend we're going to have! Secondly, we're thinking of having an early start, say around 5pm. We had a fair amount of people last night, and it was an uninterrupted couple of hours talking, which was perfect, but any longer and it might have gotten a bit tedious. So in the hopeful anticipation of a large crowd we (well, me) propose an early start, say go from 5-7pm...take an interval/tea break in which to share around some snacks, or even cook up a quick stir fry...eat and chat..and get back into things for another hour or two...yay or nay? It was also suggested that perhaps could split into two smaller groups...thoughts? And the last issue I can come up with is where? Does anyone want to volunteer their home? In any case, my house is available always, but I know its fun to host one of these so if there's any takers..! I was even thinking of (willing it to be a warm, pleasant evening) book clubbing in the park behind my house..it's a good size and has cool equipment, and I'd just get some picnic blankets..or everyone could bring a garden chair! And talk with torches under our faces, horror story telling style! So, everyone let me know what you think! Last night was great!! Due to the fact that I'm going to see some movies as part of the film festival on Sunday night I won't be able to make it to bookclub this month [sorry guys!]. But I have read two good books lately, that I recommend if they sound like they would interest you at all: The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold About a 14 year old girl who gets raped & murdered. Story then progresses to be told through her perspective in heaven, detailing what happens to her family after her murder, how they cope etc. The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: My Life at Rose Red Actual diary entries written by a women married to a high-profile business man/socialiate in the early twentieth century. Sort of a horror/mystery type book about supernatural happenings in a haunted mansion, as well as the life of Ellen Rimbauer and how she becomes progressively more unstable due to the events that take place in the house and how her life changes once she gets married/has children. More info about each book on amazon.com, both are books i couldn't put down at times, hope sunday night goes well! xo imogen. bookclubbing, we're bookclubbing......i rolled into town from a raging 3 week trip covering about 7000 kms about one hour before the club was due to start. by this stager i was definitely in the fucking zone was psyched enough to make some 'double choc muffins' that tasted like compacted dirt with a few choc chips inside...luckily other kids provided something edible. after socialising etc... for a short time we got straight down to business in the 'zen room' out the back.... chris (who impressed my housemates with his friendly demeanour, and looks even more xstonedx than usual in his livejournal) reported upon a book about cocaine, although only halfway through dubbed it a meritorious effort and recommended it to all, most memorably the book said that coca cola actually still contains a derivative of cocaine. it really deserves the name crack juice! brett talked up the latest title of a book, shit i can't remember the name but its the dude who wrote the da vinci code, after picking it up from i believe an airport. a veritable goldmine of information regarding contemporary popular fiction, amongst other things, our man rated it highly and welcomed the relative lack of cheesy romance from the author. bura gave us a full madd review of a 'sandman' graphic novel it was extremely interesting to hear him talk about and analyse something he is obviously really into....the graphic novel scene seems to be snowballing and it has gained legitimacy as a respected medium of expression. At least in Australia, we're decades behind other countries though...but i hear that in the city library flinders lane there will actually be a graphic novels section...hell yeah. Lydia reviewed a book named Tully she had read numerous times before and still managed to find something from reading again. it detailed a young woman's world of sex, crime and friendship in the seedy underbelly of kansas city and caused us to slide off onto a tangent for a while as usual. lil' pete gave us the word up on a douglas adams book...my memory of this one is hazy brother...and i think two other books but its been like 2 weeks. so that was real cool and good to see him representing, he cut everyone to ribbons with his wisecracks as usual but it was all in good fun...ha ha ....(watch your back you fuck.) and i topped it off like a plastic tasting glace cherry with my review of 'double duce' a book about 40 oz throwing, toilet sledgehammering, fare evading, grave digging, gun toting weed dealing ne'er do wells. the best comment i could make is that i left it in the kitchen and within a week two of my housemates had picked it up and read the whole thing, comeing up to me and saying 'what the fuck!! read it!!!! give a hoot read a book til next time its gonna be a party this month y'all.....xk | | Monday, June 28th, 2004 | 2:06 pm [phatlids]

stolen from the livejournal of 'regicide13' aka keith (aka special k!)
"the night of nights the bookclubofdeath convergence part III occurred 30.5.04 whereby many flakes, herbs, and plain ole haters failed to attend despite claiming allegiance to the bookclub. however, this offered those who showed a less claustrophobic experience in the luxurious surrounds of 106 blyth street, we were actually able to talk and get to know eachother intimately (...?!) and our hosts flowed us fine food and creature comforts like tea. a splendid night was had by all.brett gave us the lowdown on 'marching powder' about a corrupt prison system which operatives effectively as a cocaine factory and has its own cafes, schools etc... elly wassn't too enthused on her book 'smithereens' about a 14 year old temptress who drove a lincoln continental with a gun in the glove compartment., yikes. lil' pete had taken the role of comic relief for the evening and the dodgy wisecracks were flowing like cheap champagne. he also offered his opinions on yet more science fiction short stories...this time by arthur c. clarke, and a comic by al burian which i had read also so we engaged in a charming repartee on the topic. imogen talked about her book "curious dog' something concerned with an autistic boy so this sparked some conversation that was actually very interesting. i lauded a book about deforestation called 'srangely like war'...by derrick jensen. Devastating. have a chat with me about it. ok then lovecats don't miss out on the next 'chapter' ( ho ho) of the bookclubofdeath saga...its gonna probably be at my house 300 gore st fitzroy. the reading is at yeah it s a bit wordy but don't wig out just stick with it its surprisingly relevant. this article sparked the french student uprising of 68 after all the student union got kicked out for using uni resources to make it. http://www.bopsecrets.org/SI/poverty.htm (nothing says it like neon blue) xk" | | Tuesday, June 1st, 2004 | 6:11 pm [_generica]
