On Joel And Interlude... [Mar. 25th, 2009|11:34 am]

joeslash
I apologize. I've been with the sickness for the past few days, so forgive me if my congestion comes across in this post.

One of the observations I made in writing about Joel was that his goals and reasons for being have changed dramatically over the course of the past couple years since I first came up with the angel/demon. I think a good part of that evolution comes from my changing viewpoints of my personal faith over the years. It became difficult in the middle of the short story to deliver what I thought would be Joel's driving desire. At some points in the Book of Fluids, he simply wants to kill Oscar. In other points, he wants to "rejoin" with him in some kind of Vader/Skywalker-esque fashion. I think it got to a point that I didn't even properly understand how they came to be and what they wanted. Even as separate extremes, they both have their own opposing balances. Joel's typically nasty all throughout–just to varying degrees–but Oscar has moments where he is less than "pious" and not just due to the effects of the Soul Mirror.

Also, having read recent developments, I've started taking a real hard look at Interlude... I had always been under the impression that the piece was supplemental and not required reading--moreso believed that based on the fact that so much of it seems like inside jokes. And I'm on the outside.

But my first clue that I should have taken better notice comes with Geschichte der Palantenna, where it recounts Lord Gauss' confrontation with Lady First Critic Ninqueriel, ruler of Palantenna, daughter of Anaxerretibes.

Of course, I've always been confused as to where the Pyramid is. First, Mihai Costescu finds it on the home planet of the Chamaleen. Then it's orbiting Gamazoha Prime on OCON-G. Then we find out it's been on far off Palantenna for centuries upon centuries? Was this one of those evolutionary writing developments that are a natural result of the project, or am I mistaking the Pyramid for something else? After all, they don't come right out and say Pyramid, they say [cube upon the rock?].

Then I'm certain there's other small details hidden within the remainder of Interlude... but I just haven't had the opportunity to delve further.

Seriously. How long now? If you don't finish before I have to start writing my thesis, I will finish the book myself. You have two years.

[music |Starsailor - Music Was Saved]

I read once in the Necronomicon that in Cthulhu's language there is an action, ng'fhtagn'h; or "with-dreaming". For my words in the liber fluidorum, this is the left-hand orb of irrecumbent numinousness.

The right-hand orb is, as the permutators have taught, the process making sense of itself as a multitudinous, baroque cosmology to learn limitation and appreciation by enumeration.

As all limited expression of infinity is but one of many cries in wide darkness, such as of lashing horsepersons, thought of publication had never occurred me. With one hand, as I said, is imparted the social joy of dreaming among friends, in such a fashion as in one of myriad roleplaying games of beauty and glory that have come and gone in my time. In all such games nothing world-lasting is built, but rather things are made to dance and to serve for a brief while, before melting back into the clouded valleys between our cyclops-homing mountains. What dreams, but the most despairing, are consistent across the night? Thinking thusly I may have erred, and so poisoned the grounds with inconsistency, with overabundance of reference (are there enough lilies to weep over so many nameless graves?) and with broken threads. But that I thought, and planned little, but moved my brush by moments' impressions to move and dazzle my fellows, because so humble were the pretensions.

With the other hand, as I said, is imparted the knowledge outside truth that the book wrote itself upon the fabric of our lives and mine, not as a lower reality but as an elsewhere that is also home. Verily I doubt Klot or Corso ever shuddered as I have been made to shudder contemplating what I -- when being more foolish than usual -- claim to have written, as if I had freedom or control. And once granted these realities cross-influence, I have navigated into troubling paradoxic straits of cosmology, which I can but slowly negotiate: the unstoppable cunning of Moebius' plan and my delay in finishing my contribution coincide, for reasons the second paragraph of this essay explains.

And these explain why a) I never considered publishing, and so wrote in a careless way that would be nightmarish to revise unto publication, but I'm not against it; and why b) the end of XXXII eludes me still.

Serious Business [Jun. 27th, 2008|07:11 pm]

It's no secret that I've often fantasized about seeing the Book of Fluids in a published format. In some instances, I've even entertained the idea of the epic becoming an animated series--particularly in the vein of animation quality seen in the Ghost in the Shell series.

This is where I force myself to approach this equation with some kind of logic. Perhaps I'm reaching too far for this. I'm of a school of thought that if you want something bad enough, you can achieve it--but it'll take a lot of hard work and dedication and the more you strive for something, the greater chance you have of succeeding. I know the world doesn't always work this way, but the odds are in the favor of someone who actually DOES something as opposed to the individual who does nothing.

As one-fourth of the creative force behind the story, I realize that my culture has an influence in my desire to get something back from the Book, and I wonder if I might be offending my Fellow Fluidologists with this "American capitalist" view. After all, we started the Book solely for fun and our own personal amusement. It was never intended to be something that could be published, and to desire such a thing, while not necessarily bad, would definitely call for a reordering and overall restructuring of the Book as it stands. And in doing so, would the messages that some of us have explored and attempted to convey in our writing continue to ring true in adjusted material? It's certainly something I wouldn't want to do without the consent of others. In the end, I would strongly desire a finished product that all could agree with and understand.

One day, many years from now, the Book of Fluids will probably cease to exist. Personally, I'd like to see a return on the time and effort I've put into the Book, but not merely financially. I want to see people read the Book (or watch it) and enjoy it. I want to hear people talk about the story and what they enjoyed (and perhaps what they didn't). I want to entertain people, to enlighten them, to make them think, and I feel that the Book does that now and could do that (after a rather thorough editing, of course, to avoid copyright infringement, mostly).

Am I right or am I wrong?

Should I get Vinny's cheek mark tattooed on my left shoulder? I have considered this for some time, and was reminded of it recently. Or is this rather tacky and self-aggrandising of me? Note also that I have no pain tolerance and have no ink on me so far. Also I might later regret it when I am forty or something. However, it is kinda cool.

Thoughts?

The Marionettes Of Distant Masters
(Russell Edson)

A pianist dreams that he's hired by a wrecking company to
ruin a piano with his fingers . . .
On the day of the piano wrecking concert, as he's
dressing, he notices a butterfly annoying a flower in his window
box. He wonders if the police should be called. Then he thinks
maybe the butterfly is just a marionette being manipulated by
its master from the window above.
Suddenly everything is beautiful. He begins to cry.

Then another butterfly begins to annoy the first butterfly.
He again wonders if he shouldn't call the police.
But, perhaps they are marionette-butterflies? He thinks
they are, belonging to rival masters seeing whose butterfly can
annoy the other's the most.

And this is happening in his window box. The Cosmic
Plan: Distant Masters manipulating minor Masters who, in turn,
are manipulating tiny butterfly-Masters who, in turn, are
manipulating him . . . A universe webbed with strings!
Suddenly it is all so beautiful; the light is strange . . .
Something about the light! He begins to cry . . .

Something Fun To Do [Apr. 22nd, 2007|02:45 pm]

[mood | thoughtful]

"Cammy," said Weiss. "Dhat was an easy one. Who for an archduchess’s lookalike?"

"Are we still in Earth games?" asked Dolph, conspicuously smoking a blue glow-stick-like thing, I think they make those in Hungarden.

"Same planet, same decade."

"Nina Williams."

"Good one," conceded Weiss.

I'm sure you recognize this bit from Chapter 26 of Weiss and Dolph comparing other main characters to 21st century Earth game characters. And what I can determine from this exchange is that both agree Nina Williams is a good visual comparison to Nicolette Ticine--and I myself probably agree with that.

The purpose for my post is that I'm curious as to who you, my fellow Fluidologists and Fluidphiles, think are good look-a-likes for our BoF characters? But it's not so simple as comparing one individual's looks to a character. There are at least three different factors I want you to consider...

LOOKS LIKE: and in this, you're comparing any celebrity/historical figure/fictional character you can think of. If, in fact, the character in question is better compared to somebody you know personally in real life, I think a picture would be in order, if you have one.

ACTS LIKE: this is all about attitude. A character might look like Person A but not share their attitude--probably more along the lines of Person B. That's the reason for this category.

SOUNDS LIKE: speaks for itself, in case the person's voice sounds different from the person they're compared to.

Of course, you don't have to get so specific--and you don't have to post anything at all, but if you feel so inclined, I think it'll be cool and give us some more insight into not only our characters but each other.
