I guess I'm all about the race discussions lately. I'm sure it's just a phase and will pass, but how can I deny posting stuff like this when it just falls into my lap?

This post in another community got me thinking.

Fuck that a majority of the scholarships and grants that I'm looking up are for minorities, gays, and everything else that I can't qualify for because I'm just a white girl with nothing but a financial situation and a decent GPA.

Nothing against minorities, but it's beginning to get asinine that I have a hard time finding anything that I can qualify for because I'm not a fucking minority. Why is it that they get twice as many chances at scholarships? I understand the whole fucking issue where schools have to let in minorities and give them equal opportunities, but why is it that I cannot find anything that targets someone that isn't specifically a minority? Is the whole racial thing still that terrible where the scholarship/grant market has to be saturated with minority stuff? Do you know how fucking annoying it is when you're reading info about a scholarship, thinking, "hey, I could apply," and then "Black, Asian, Hispanic, Indian, etc" pops up, thus dashing your hopes?

Don't get me wrong, it's great that they exist, but I can't help but be absolutely frustrated trying to find ways to pay for school that aren't loans from hell. I can't help but think that if anyone even bothered to come up with a "white" scholarship that everyone would be up in arms, and scream about how unfair it is because they have all these other scholarships that they can apply for. But if you think about it, it's the same case for minorities, isn't it? They can apply for all their minority scholarships, and can also apply for the others that anyone can apply for as well. Isn't it getting a bit ridiculous that they assume that I can get into school and afford it on my own because I'm white? I know that a lot of white kids out there can afford to have mommy and daddy pay for everything, as well as some kids who are Hispanic, Asian, Black, etc. I also know that just because you're white doesn't mean you can always afford to go to school, just like other kids who are Asian, Hispanic, Black, etc. Are schools and scholarship foundations still that racist? If they are, fuck them, they're making life hell for people like me.

Fuck that I'm having a bitch of a time finding anything on scholarships that I can apply for. Can't apply for that one because I'm not the right color. Can't apply for that one because I'm not in that field of study. Can't apply for that one because I'm not in high school. Can't apply for that one because I don't have a horn growing out of my head. Can't apply for that one because my eyes are green instead of blue.

Fuck that I have 500 of these to weed through, and so far out of the first couple of pages, one may be an option. But in 3-4 years. Fuck that everything prior to these was a total bust.

Also fuck these "scholarships" that are only worth 75-100 dollars. What the fuck is someone going to do with that? That'll barely cover fees or even buy a book. Whoop de doo, I won a hundred bucks for all that hard work! I know every bit counts, but Jesus Christ, that's pathetic. If these organizations are going to fucking put out scholarships, make sure that the recipients can do something useful with it, you cheap bastards.

If this shit keeps up, I won't have anywhere decent to transfer to in a few years because I can't afford that shit. Fuck this.

My oldest son will be applying to university soon. He has some scholarships available to him that are race based and I have encouraged him to apply for anything that he will qualify within reason. We can't afford to pay for college so he is going to need all the help that he can get. He doesn't have any problem applying for race based scholarship but I do know some people that flat out will not apply for race based scholarships. They state that they do not feel that they should accept money simply for being of a certain race.

So, for discussion/debate:

Would you let or suggest for your child to apply for a race based scholarship?

Do you think race based scholarships are a good thing or not so great? Why?

Should race based scholarships only be for minorities or do you think it's ok to have "whites only" scholarship as well (like that college in Rhode Island started a few years ago)

As a child who grew up a majority-minority (I am white, and my home town was 99% hispanic and 1% other) and was not allowed to apply for any "minority only scholaraships" they kind of tick me off a bit. They could compete for mine, but I couldn't compete for theirs.

I don't begrudge ANYONE applying for anything they qualify for, but I think applying race to something kinda sends up a "You can't compete with whitey, here's a help for you!" flag of some sorts.

My sister has my nephew enrolled in school as a Hispanic, he barely meets the qualifying criteria, but he DOES meet them, so while we have no Hispanic culture, he has just enough Hispanic blood in him to make it legal, and so she's taking advantage of it.

I don't blame her a bit.

"and was not allowed to apply for any "minority only scholarships"

Well YEAH. Why would you even get pissed about that. You were a minority in ONE PLACE, not every single place you went. If you don't like being the only white person, you can go almost anywhere and be surrounded by people of your own race. Easily.

And it's not "you can't compete" it's "there's a lot of really prejudice people deciding on who gets these scholarships so here's a way to prevent that"

I would encorage them to if they couldn't otherwise afford university.

I don't think we have that many minority scholarships here. We certainly don't have ones for gay people. There are a few for aboriginal and torres strait islanders, because they generally have a worse socio-economic status, but there are also scholarships for hardship or being poor, which they could also apply for.

I don't necescarily agree in theory with these 'race' scholarships because they could be applying for the hardship and poverty scholarships, and they can add race discrimination in there and have a better chance of gettiing them.

In reality though, there are too many disadvantaged people and not enough scholarships, so I'm all for it.

In High school we were told to apply for EVERYTHING. Even if they were looking for a black man with green spots and orange eyes and I am a blonde hair/hazel eyes white woman apply. It can't hurt because at the end if they have one to award the grant to they will give it to the blond hair girl.

I would encourage my kids to do what ever it takes to help make college life easier. Then again we are not rich so that maybe why I feel that way.

My best friend's Mom declared her major as business so she could get more scholarships while she really studied early childhood education. College is expensive, if there is money out there you may be able to get then go for it.

I am white. My daughter is biracial. I will encourage her to apply for race-based scholarships.

Even before I had a biracial child, I was supportive of these scholarships. Why? Because anything that gives someone the ability to further their education is a great idea in my book.

Kiddo can apply for any scholarship for which he qualifies. Race based scholarships are a necessity for a lot of reasons, not least being that being able to apply for the same scholarships as white students does not mean that minorities will be given equal consideration. And legacy admissions and scholarships are white only by simple fact that for years minorities weren't allowed to attend those schools at all.

I'm curious, so please enlighten me, how on paper(which is what most scholarship applications are) an institution would know the race of the applicant?

I have no problem with it at all. Any private person or organization or has the right ot offer their scholarship money to whomever they please. I'm just glad that they're offering it to someone, I don't think anyone should be discouraged from offering scholarship money to anyone at any time. And until anything like the majority of scholarship money is available only to students of color, there's really nothing to whine about.

If my (hypothetical) child qualified for any race-based scholarships, I probably wouldn't want them applying. But that's because my husband and I are both white, and any "whites only" scholarship would probably have some fairly racist overtones. If my child were biracial or if I did a transracial adoption, then I would have no problem with them applying for race-based scholarships.

Your stupidity is amazing. There is no magical money or admission simply for being black. There are plenty of scholarships and legacy admits targetted to white kids. And given the history behing why race based scholarships were created? They are an attempt to level an uneven playing field. There are the same grade standards across the board. Do you simply ignore history?

My husband and I have discussed this previously.
No, we will not encourage our children to apply for race-based scholarships or programs. We'll actually discourage it.
When my husband was in college, he had opportunities to apply for programs that were either geared towards supporting ESL-type students or immigrant students, and he declined to do either. Any assistance that he got in paying for college he got because of his merit, not the color of his skin.

I also know I have had a hard time paying for my education. I'm white, my parents are still married and make a pretty living. I have some talents, but nothing SO exemplary that it would qualify me for scholarships, and so on and so forth. It has made it hard for me to attend school since I have to also simultaneously work full-time in order to support myself and my family.

I lol @ the fuckyoulist posters's assumption that he should be able to claim any and every scholarship.

Maybe if we were all so earnest about equal opportunities then race-based scholarships wouldn't exist in the first place;)

Anyway...

Would you let or suggest for your child to apply for a race based scholarship?

Well, he's white, so that would be pointless.

Do you think race based scholarships are a good thing or not so great? Why?

I think that a lot of non-whites will experience so much disadvantage and discrimination (from whites) during their lives that race-based scholarships are not really 'scholarships' but kind of a 'boost up to where white people are anyway'.

Should race based scholarships only be for minorities or do you think it's ok to have "whites only" scholarship as well (like that college in Rhode Island started a few years ago)

I don't think white people really need any sort of 'leg up' based on their colour alone. White people aren't really discriminated against, YKWIM? I think 'whites only' scholarships are petty and immature and are essentially nothing but the lovechild of ignorance and too much spare money.

Huh. And when I applied to college all scholarships were automatic up here and the university didn't necessarily ask for race at all. I once heard of scholarships based off your grades and ACT/SAT scores that OMG a white person could qualify for and tend to do so more than minorities because of the way the tests are written. I'm white and I know we're the majority and we are full of privilege that we seem to be blind to. Yes, there are times when I get a little huffy about things based on race relations but I scholarships are one thing that us white people have a monopoly on and any bitching simply means you didn't have a good enough GPA or aren't applying to enough schools. I chose the school that offered me the most money and worked my ass off for 13 years to get those scholarships. I think if your child worked hard and gets accepted to a college, as a minority they have every right to apply for a scholarship honoring the fact that not everyone in their position had the time and dedication they did.

At the same time, if you are a person who can easily afford college and already have a full ride no matter what race, stop applying for scholarships. I turned down a scholarship from the cancer society because I had insurance and a full ride and didn't need extra money. I wanted the money to go to someone who needed it more.

I would suggest and encourage my child to apply for any scholarship for which they may qualify.

I really do not have a strong opinion either way on "race scholarships". I do not believe they are available in the drastic amount that some people claim they are, nor do I take any issue with people/organizations/whomever offering their money for scholarships based on race or any other reason they choose to. If such a scholarship helps somebody attain an education they may not have been able to otherwise, that is a wonderful thing for their future.

When my best friend applied to University of Pennsylvania, he checked off "African-American" as his race on the application. He is the epitome of a white person. Why did he do that? Because he thought that it was silly and he knew that no one would actually ever question him on it. He made a really good point though- there are many reasons why no one would ever bother to question you on something like that- who's to say that he wasn't raised by an African-American family and thus considered himself such?

I don't have any children, but I'm white (although Jewish- it's always perplexed me as to how Judaism is seen as a race when in a negative situation) and assuming my kids will be as well, they won't be entitled to any race-based scholarships. I'd really rather my kid get a scholarship based on their merits than on race though.

In terms of how I feel about them...I think race based scholarships are okay, but I feel like there are plenty of better ways to award scholarships. I understand the whole "level the playing field" thing, but then I think about someone in the exact same financial, educational, and familial status as a minority but won't be able to get the scholarship simply because they are white. And there are people who are like that.

Eh...like I said before, I think that there are better ways to give out scholarships than race. And so, yeah. I'd rather see more scholarships than a white only scholarship.

They won't get the race based one, but they would get the 87 other ones they qualify for, not least of which would be the ones for which the POC student would not get simply for being POC.

OK, let's see. If i adopted a child who was black, or hispanic, or whatever, I would NOT encourage them to apply for a race-based scholarship...nor would I if I had a biracial biological child, if we were doing well financially, etc. Because there's no reason to apply for a race-based scholarship(that assumes you're in a lower socioeconomic group) if you're not. And there's no reason for a black person with white adoptive parents being raised with white privilege to get a race-based scholarship either.

Frankly, I think race-based scholarships ARE too prevalent-they should be based on socioeconomic status primarily, or achievement in a certain area. your race is not an achievement. If you are black AND poor, then sure, apply for a scholarship for those who need it. if you're black and rich, apply for a merit based scholarship, or if you're gifted in athletics, or whatever it is. But you shouldn't just get a scholarship because you're black or hispanic or otherwise a minority without either being in need, or earning it through an achievement.

But then, I believe the entire affirmative action system should change to be socioeconomically based, rather than racially. And I think the whole system would be unecessary in 10 years if we instituted quality elementary education for ALL children.

Oh no! An extra 3 black people get some money for college every year! LIFE IS SO UNFAIR!

I've got no sympathy for that argument at all. There's just so much GOOD about helping minority students go to college, that I just can't get mad about the truly non-effect this has on the lives of white applicants.

Would I let my children apply for these scholarships? Sure, assuming my child is actually part of the targeted group.

IIRC, the scholarship at Roger Williams University wasn't put out by the school itself, it was put out by the College Republicans club. As a private organization with private funds, the College Republicans can do whatever they want with their money, IMO. I think their "whites only" offer was stupid as hell, but I don't argue their right to do it. So yes..."whites only" scholarships can exist, but not government-sponsored or supported ones. As nasty, petty and needless as they are. I'd have a serious beef with my kid applying for one, just on principle.

If my kid weren't white, HELL YES I would encourage him to apply for race-based scholarships. The racial breakdowns in colleges and universities are ridiculous. There are too damn many white morons in colleges taking up space. I could have gotten into one of the best universities in the country by mentioning my grandfather on the application. That's ridiculous and shouldn't happen, but had I wanted to go there badly enough, I would have taken advantage of it. Unless we're all willing to give up the privileges we DO have, we shouldn't fault others for theirs. Too many people don't recognize the privileges that come just from skin color, so they get their panties in a bunch over people taking advantage of opportunities that aren't open to them. Oh no, there's one door closed to you for each twelve million open. Cry your pathetic little tears and get the fuck over it.

I think race based scholarships, like affirmative action, are a good thing.

It's easy to get scholarships. Standardized tests are written for white people. White schools tend to be better. If a white kid can't get a scholarship, it's because they're dumb. Take the SAT again or something.

I applied to college, got accepted, and at the same time I got accepted, I got a letter saying I had received a full tuition scholarship for 8 semesters. I never applied, and didn't even graduate high school. I'm finishing up my 8th semester right now.
