| IIDX GOLD CS Tournament at RGCanada Summer Conference |
[04 Aug 2008|12:01am] |
Since this community has been quiet lately, I figured I should post up something IIDX and community related.
A few years ago, I made a post here about some IIDX tournaments I ran at a DDR Conference. I've been running them at every conference since (there are two per year, one in July and one in December) and some of the people I mentioned just trying out IIDX for the first time in Beginner tournaments are now great players and have repeatedly entered and made strides further in the game.
I said it in 2005 and I'll say it again now: If you want more people in your area interested in IIDX, this is how you do it. Running these has allowed random people who have never played the game to see it first hand, and to even try it since I run beginner tournaments for those who have never played, or played a few songs at most.
This year was no different, and GOLD CS conveniently was released just before the 2008 RGCanada (formerly DDR Canada) Summer Conference in Calgary, Alberta. Over the last few years, turnout by players who could enter another tournaments have decreased steadily. It was at the point where only two of us could enter it, so I sadly had to scrap another, leaving Beginner, Normal, and Hyper tournaments. Interestingly enough, this was the most interesting and most fun tournament I have run yet. There was never a clear victor (unlike how the another tournament always turned out, no offense to you Bong) in these tournaments, and some of the matches were extremely tight. There was even a tie on one of the songs in the Hyper division.
Beginner tournaments are extremely easy to run now, compared to when I had only 8th or 9th Style to work with along with their pitiful selection of "beginner" charts. GOLD CS has a strong selection of 1s that are extremely easy for anyone to clear, easier than 5.1.1. beginner was back in 8th CS. The songs are fairly rated between 1-3 and there are no clear overshoots on difficulty. With that in mind, it doesn't take long to get one together and run it (3 difficulty levels makes for 3 rounds), making it an easy choice for me to include along with the more serious tournaments in Normal and Hyper.
Below are the results from the tournaments. For Normal and Hyper, I've included Max EX Score for the songs to compare to the player's scores if you're interested (there were some nice scores in some rounds!). If you follow through the rounds, it's neat to see where some players excelled, then fell apart in others. Like I said before, some of the scores ended up pretty close too, plus it marks the first time a girl has won a tournament here! (Joscelyn in Hyper) Overall an awesome tournament, and I hope to duplicate its success in December.
EX Score was used as a measure for ranking, added up over the three songs per round. If you failed the song, 10% was taken off your EX score (except beginner).
My format for organization is as follows: Song Name (Difficulty - Max EX Score). If they failed the song, (F) appears by the score, with the 10% already taken off. I added one extra song in the final round of the normal and hyper tournament for the final two to play just to really push the difficulty. That's why you see four songs there.
( Beginner Tournament )
( Normal Tournament )
( Hyper Tournament )
Once again, big Congrats to Flaire for winning Beginner, Chris for winning Normal, and Joscelyn for winning Hyper! Because Normal had the most entrants, I gave away a little hard hat stress ball from my work to Chris for winning it.
It's good thing this was easy to setup and run, because I was quite stressed out at the time of doing this tournament as I was making the Final Round stepcharts for the ITG Tournament as well, which was eating up most of my time. We're on the IIDX Community, so I figure I can pimp out the Denjin K Megamix out some more since it's IIDX related and was made by members of the community.
Enjoy, and if you have any questions feel free to ask. :)

This has restored a little faith in those that were freaking out yesterday about IIDX 16th Style:

So maybe IIDX 16 won't be so frighteningly lame after the whole "IT'S PINK" scare yesterday.....

i know this isn't iidx specifically, but i thought this would still be of interest to people here. if it doesn't belong here, i can delete it.
there have been a bunch of jubeat play videos popping up on youtube. it's all fine and good to watch people play it, but one person was kind enough to put up videos of a few songs without anyone playing them so you can see very clearly what's happening on the screen and get a feel for the game play.
[enjoy].

I just got my PS2 modded, and I want to get good at IIDX. What mixes should I go for first? I got Happy Sky, because I figured it was awesome and friendly. I've been told to stay away from getting 9th and Red immediately, because I'm a nub, and they aren't as friendly. I know I'll be getting Gold when I can (when will that be?)...
So yeah, outside of Happy Sky, what are some of the more friendly mixes? I wanna be good at this game.
Also like, advice for relatively new players? How'd you guys overcome the IIDX learning curve... x_x
