"Hugh Hancock is awesome." Well, no article that starts that way could possibly be bad.

Jemima Kiss, writing for the Guardian's digital content blog, writes up the panel I just appeared on at C21's FutureMedia conference. Interesting and great to see the "mainstream" (I challenged the concept of mainstream on the panel, but hey) media picking up and being enthusiastic about the ideas we've been talking about!
  • Dammit, upstaged again!

That was a fun panel. I started off by telling a bunch of serious media execs that I was the Antichrist, intent on turning their viewers into creators, and Hugh then told them that he was The Enemy. (It was a VP at Warner Bros who gave me that moniker when he found out what I do for a living. I'll do my best not to disappoint him.)

As we said, there's a million people like Hugh who look at TV and film, and think, "I could do better than that". Yeah, guys, that's your business model and your market we're launching a flying drop-kick at. Guerrilla film-making has reached a new level.

There was a strange silence afterwards when they asked for questions, which left us thinking we'd bombed. However, there was a steady trickle of people coming up afterwards telling us that it was the most interesting panel of the day, and the reason they'd not asked any questions was simply that they were totally gobsmacked.

    • Re: Dammit, upstaged again!

It was a damn fine panel. And you did a darn good job representing the more "respectable" end of the indie-Machinima scene, so I could just be out there at them.
  • Nice going man! Told you your oration was improving!
  • Freakin' fantastic! Way to go! (You AND The Antichrist both, well done!)
    • It was darn fun. Matt hasn't mentioned his other brilliant line, which is "There's a war about to break out between amateurs and big media companies. At Moviestorm, we think of ourselves as arms dealers - we sell to both sides."

I think that we can have fun in the next couple of years with him as the arms trader and me as the mad revolutionary!
  • Damn ambiguous journalists! Get off the fence and tell us what you really think!

Well played Hugh (and Matt too). I'm really annoyed that I missed this one now.
  • Messiah?

He's not the Messiah he's a very naughty boy!

Nice one Hugh, glad you're getting the recognition you deserve, vive la revolution!
