17th-Sep-2004 12:35 am (UTC) - Beta, anyone?
Experience: Absolutely none editing fanfic or slash as of 09.17.04. But I am a writer and I'm used to critiquing and editing others' work and my own.

Strengths: Characterization, dialogue, style, consistency of story and character, (Spike-voice, Xander-voice, Angel-voice, Giles voice), grammar/syntax/spelling, the appropriate times/usages for Brit-slang. The ability to weed out phrases and words that simply don't belong.

Weaknesses: Really minute minutiae, i.e. the price of Weetabix, the exact poly-rayon blend Mr. Gordo's made of. Descriptions of rooms and inanimate objects.

Can't Stand: Excessive amounts of Brat!Dawn, random Buffy-bashing. If you're making her Bitca!Buffy, there should be a plausible reason.

Line in the Sand: Not that I know of, I'll try anything once.

Turnaround Time: Depends on the length of the piece, how much editing it needs and how screwy my life is that week. Not more than three days for a short story, at least one week for something novel-length and I will require your first born as payment.

Contact Me!: brinkleysparks@aol.com, beetle@writing.com, the_great_nameless_last@horrorchannel.com

The Hard-sell: What I lack in experience I make up for in being a total grammar nazi and stickler for character and plot details.

Bottom Line: If you've ever used the phrase "his proud manhood" in a love scene, hoo-boy do you need me...

24th-May-2005 10:42 pm (UTC)
Wheesh, been posting here for a couple of months, and haven't listed myself as a beta? Gah, I'm a 'tard

Anyway!

Name's Chelle or [info]altyronsmaker
Strengths: English major so, grammar, characterization, structure, word choice, voice, plot development.
Weaknesses: don't know, haven't run across anything yet that I suck at - or at least my beta victims haven't said anything.
Notes: I tend to do a nazi style beta. I jot down everything that strikes me. However, you don't have to heed everything I say; it IS YOUR fic, not mine.
Restrictions: None that I have come across. I'll read anything, won't necessary like everything. I don't understand the psychology behind D/s so I have a tough time with it.
Contact: mcsapp@tnni.net, encchick2@yahoo.com, or encchick@go.com. Feel free to drop a line.

I'd love to beta. Do it now for a friend writing a novel, but haven't done it online for anyone yet. I can't write myself, but am very picky about what I read.;->

Name :: Sarah
Preferred genres :: Pretty much any. I'm less fond of Vamp Xander, Daddy!kink, and schmoopy fics, but I'll read them.
Strengths :: Grammer, tenses, spelling, continuity.
Weaknesses :: I can tell you if the characterizations are bad, but I'm not so good at telling you how to fix it.
Pet peeves :: Bad spelling, mixed up tenses, OOC without motivation.
Will beta :: Anything, though some may take longer than others (see the preferred genres above... ;->
Contact :: e-mail is best kaysm95@adelphia.net

Still interested.

My e-mail has changed, though. It's now kaysm95@sigecom.net
3rd-Aug-2005 12:56 am (UTC)
My strengths are grammar, punctuation, and spelling. But, I'm afraid that I don't know enough about BtVS to correct a slight plot inconsistency or character occness....though I am good at biting sarcasm. =D
6th-Aug-2005 06:09 pm (UTC)
I'm always up for reading stuff through!

My strengths are; spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and characterisation (apart from for Buffy, Riley and Ethan - since I don't read much stuff based on their characters, but I'd still be willing to try on them).

I took english at A level, and managed to get a B last year - I don't know what I got this year yet, but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

Umm, I come online practically everyday, so I should be quite prompt at reading and returning the fic.

Contact me at: skysha_tranqui@handbag.com
Or through my LJ.

Name: Jitkajaylor, JJ, Susan

Communication major...suppose that means dialogue, grammar, tone

Fandoms: BtVS/AtS, Anime, SG-1, Sentinel, Harry Potter, if you can convince me the show is a good one...

Pairings: I am not a shipper. I'll write/read anyone that you, the author, can make me believe (or PWP...)

I love AU and X-over! I read a lot of fanfics, though I warn you, I'm not a fan of the relentlessly dark ones. I like a bit of sap or humor thrown in for balance. I can help with the general dislike of a scene, development, character, etc.

Turn-over: For short scenes/chapters, I can probably get them back within a week. For longer stories or highly intensive revision, it may take a bit longer.

Just tell me what you need, and I'll see what I can do!

^^howdy everyone! I'm a very odd beta actually. I don't do the normal grammar/spelling junk. I do charrie checks! You wanna know how old Spike was when he was turned, ask me(even though there is not a techinal date, many agree he was turned in his early to mid-twenties in 1880). If you want to know what size shoe Xander wears I can tell you^^. And no, I'm not a stalker, just surf the web too much. Glad to help anyone, just drop me a line at my email. moonstarwarrior@yahoo.com

Name: Blacknblue2
Will beta any pairing, but my favorite is Spander (of course)
Experience: I've beta'd for a few authors.
Strengths: Spelling, grammar,
Weaknesses: I probably use too many commas
Pet peeves: Stories that have obviously not been spell checked.
Will beta: Pretty much anything except rape. Borderline non-con is okay, as is past abuse. If you're not sure, just ask.
Contact: Email - blacknblue2_2001@yahoo.com

11th-Dec-2005 11:44 pm (UTC)
Name: I don't actually have multiple personalities, but I'll answer to any of the following: Claire, Bear or [info]mirasol

Experience: I've beta-d for a couple of people, here and there.

Strengths: Spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary, story flow, overall characterisations, Brit-speak, smut and kinks, canon minutae.

Weaknesses: Not much good for strong non-Brit character voices (e.g., Gunn, Faith, Fred).

Pairings: any BtVS/AtS m/m pairing - especially any combination of Spike/Xander/Angel/Wes/Giles.

Pet peeves: Extremely OOC characterisations and character-bashing without a reason. Oh, and your story will not come back to you with the words "shaft" or "column" included - unless you're talking architectural features.

Will beta: Anything except: dark!fic/rape (and I will include extreme non-con in that)/f/f slash. Prefer shorter fics - you'll get a quicker turnaround time with them.

Contact: wickedpixie23@yahoo.co.uk or mirasol@livejournal.com
2nd-Jan-2006 12:01 am (UTC) - Betas
Hello all,

I am available for beta readings. I am a writer/content editor by trade. I am not a proof reader but will do my best to catch as many little bits and bobs as possible. I have been reading Spander for a long while and am now working at becoming a more active member of the community.

Strengths: sentence structure, grammar, overall story flow, internal consistencies, and canon characterization.I'm Canadian so I am fairly comfortable with both British and American idioms.

Weakness: As I said I am no proofreader but I do my best.

Preferences: Spander although I will happily edit work with Oz, Wesley or Giles in it.

Contact me via my lj account lebourdon (try this first as I want to figure out all the quirks and how-tos of the lj community). If I am not responding due to what is probably lack of knowledge of the system try me at nomad99@shaw.ca.

Looking forward to hearing from others in the Spander community.
2nd-Jan-2006 02:37 am (UTC) - Beta Offer
Hello, I am pyro. I just joined this community, and I would like to offer my services as a beta. I have a minor in English, and have beta'ed before, mostly at the University. My strengths are spelling, punctuation, grammar, and help with sentence structure. I am especially used to helping people who are not native English speakers. My email is digger_erin@hotmail.com
11th-Jan-2006 12:58 am (UTC)
Been lurking and reading for quite a while, finally decided to join the fun!

I would love to beta, well, almost anything. My only real squick is daddy!kink. I prefer love and happy endings (though lots of angst along the way is okay), but I enjoy a well written dark or violent story too. I'm not a fan of f/f slash but I doubt that would come up much on this community.

I haven't written any fanfiction, but I have won a few writing awards in the past, for both fiction and poetry. I'm the offspring of two English professors (ack) and I'm very good at grammar, spelling, homonyms, and punctuation (note the Oxford comma, haha.) I'm also an excellent person to check any medical, surgical, neuroanatomical, biochemical or pharmacological details.

My main weakness would be canon dialogue/detail, especially in S1-3 of Buffy, since I didn't start watching until S4, I do not have cable, and my local rental places are sadly deficient in BtVS/AtS so I have to rely on memory alone. Also, I can only read nights at home, and not much on weekends, so if you absolutely need it NOW I am not a good choice.
23rd-Jul-2006 08:18 am (UTC)
Update: I've started writing and posting my own stuff now, which has given me new appreciation of what constitutes useful beta advice, and I've actually done a bit of beta work. I'm also consistently available on weekends now.
8th-Feb-2006 01:56 am (UTC)
I'm going to suck it up and offer to be a beta, because if it means I get to read your stuff before everyone else? ::grin::
Strengths: Grammar, spelling, finding if you've used the same word ten times in the last five sentences, finding really OOC comments (I'm not the best with the small stuff. If I can believe it I let it slide), tense changes, and gaping plot holes.
Weaknesses: The mechanics of anal sex, general man/man action. I can point out the "er, they need to use lube" thing but everything I know about gay sex I learned from reading Spander. (Hey I should make that a t-shirt.)
Preferences: I don't like Buffy as a main character (funny, that), I like Spander and Wes/Gunn and most of the Ats characters, and Faith and Willow. I don't like bondage, non-con (unless it's essential to your plot and isn't the main focus), or daddy!kink. I do like things that are very plot-y, and the longer, the better. And if it's short I'll probably pester you to write a sequel if I like it :P
Turnaround: If I know to expect something from you, like if I'm doing a multiple-part work, I'll check my e-mail at least daily, and get it back to you within 24 hours (probably sooner). If I'm not expecting your e-mail, I check less frequently (every few days.)
If you're not sure I'll be interested in whatever you're writing, send me an e-mail anyway and I'll let you know.

I'd love to beta for anyone who wants me to. The only thing I won't edit is angst with no happy resolution. I have enough of the angst in my life as it is. LOL

Hello Ladies and Gents.
Name Kk
Preferred genres Dun mind, not really into the dark/angst or character death.. very much a Happy Ending Girl
Strengths Grammar, Spelling, finding words, Brit-picking and also usually really fast. (Spike-voice, Xander-voice, Angel-voice, Giles voice, Buffy-voice and Willow-voice). Will also do crossovers.
Weaknesses Due to a lack of television during most of the series', the only series I saw the whole of was Season 4 on video and Season 5 Angel... I must admit I've seen Tabula Rasa, Once More with Feeling and Welcome to the Hellmouth so many times I find myself talking along with them. Thus, to be frank, I suck with canon
Pet peeves Cruel Spike, I'm a sucker and in denial that Spike could ever be destructively cruel, I see Spike as an ADHD Vamp with a love of doing the evil thinks like a little kid, not Psychopathically Angelus-like Cruelty. I also like plot development.
Will Beta Just about anything really, just look at my preferred genres, as long as it isn't in my no category then I'm fine.
Contact LJ and email (iamqueenkk@gmail.com)
Experience a fair bit, I'm not currently betaing for anyone, so my plate is clear... please feel free to give me betaing to play with... I also love reading fanfiction and have been a huge fan for the past 5 years, so I like to think that I've gotten enough experience on what makes a fic good and what makes one bad.

Oh and a promise, never will a fic leave my hands with waste instead of waist, are selves instead of ourselves (and yes that has happened oh so many times with one of my people) and no steak in stead of stake. it's/its, their/there/they're and were/we're/where all go without saying.

I love reading anything thrown my way, thus I'm an enthusiastic beta.
*bounces* can't wait
17th-Aug-2006 03:46 am (UTC)
My strengths are grammer, punctuation, flow, word choice, and Latin. I have yet to find anything that squicks me (except for Spawn, but that shouldn't be an issue here). My e-mail is samsgoddess at gmail.com.
28th-Dec-2006 12:12 am (UTC)
Hi there,

I'm new to lj, but I've read a lot of fan fic. My creds:

* English lit degree
* Print journalism degree (I've got another non-writing degree as well)
* Seven years of making my living as a writer
* Currently being paid to write for magazines

Other things that demonstrate my abilities:

* I love the book Eats, Shoots and Leaves
* I have multiple style manuals (and I know how to use 'em)
* I know the difference between/among (its, it's), (to, too, two), (taunt, taut, taught), (waste, waist), (bath, bathe), (breath, breathe)

Fan Fic stuff:

* All slash, all the time; mostly Spander, but I enjoy Spangle, too
* I'm a southern California native so I know my way around the 'dale and LA.
* The only kinks I don't like: mpreg, bestiality, daddy!kink
* I quote Joss and Shakespeare so much that people have to ask me who I'm quoting.
* I've been called the mistress of trivia, so if you've got a unusual situation you want to bounce off me, I'd be happy to share my knowledge and do some research (ever worked in Hollywood, a restaurant, a newspaper, Fortune 500 company, small software consulting firm, a major university in California or public school? I have. Need to know how to shear a sheep? Want to figure out what the color genetics of your gerbils will produce in the next generation? I'm your beta. I'm full of trivia!)
* I've been a tv junkie for most of my life (and I've been around since 1963), so I'm well-versed in tv knowledge.

I'm an excellent proofreader (spelling, punctuation, grammar), a strong story editor on short fics, and a decent editor on long fics if I have a heads up on multiparts (I keep notes).

I code html in my sleep (and without an editor).

I'm online most evenings 8-10 pm EST, and often during the day on weekdays. I have more time during the school year and less during the summer. My turnaround time for basic editing is reasonably fast if I'm available. Email anytime: mistress.tien at gmail dot com
25th-Feb-2007 04:36 pm (UTC)
Name: killedkelly. My real name is Kelly.
Strengths: Grammer, spelling, English slang, Spike-speak, Giles-speak. Maybe a few others.
Weaknesses: Accents.
Preference: Anything, really. Though I love Spike as submissive - it's just funny, and kinda cute.
Pairing: Any, though this is S/X.
Extra: I'm English. I speak a lot like Spike, so if you're not sure on how to spell something that he says, I'm the person you want to send your stuff too. Like, although it sounds like 'wot' it's still just spelled like 'what.' So, think of me like an English teacher - I tend to read stuff here, and on other fansites, and my friends stuff, and I find myself going 'that's not spelled right' or 'that word should be spelled differently' and things like that. And, if it's important for you, I've never beta'd before, but if you give me the chance, I don't think you'll be displeased.
Contact: email - kellysullivan645@hotmail.com - or at live journal - killedkelly.

Hello!
I've always been the one my friends ask to read their papers for school. I love giving constructive criticism, and I'm told I give it very well.

I'll tell you if I think what you've written royally sucks, but I'll definitely tell you why and what you should do to make it better.

I have no experience of doing beta work with fanfic, but I've been an obsessive reader for over three years in the Buffy Fandom. I haven't read it all, but I'm pretty close.

Spander is my baby paring, the one I always come back to even when I stray and look for other ones. Here I'm very versatile and I think I know my stuff. If it's a D/s relationship I almost exclusively read Spike as top and Xander as bottom. However, this is for my own pleasure, and I will have no problems with reading any other combinations.
I'm a definite slasher, but I have my odd het pairings. Slash wise I will and have read most that's out there. Besides Spander I love Spangel, and Giles in general. I could make a list of all the other pairings, but you get the picture.

My strengths are:
Text flow
Punctuation
Grammar

Recognising good Xander and Spike speech, not as good at writing it myself.

When reading fics, I can usually tell when something is a bit "off", due to the writer not being a native English speaker. I can help pin point the "tellers", so to say.

I'm bi-lingual. I speak, write and read English and Swedish fluently. I wouldn't be able to say which language is the stronger one.

I'm Maddie, and I'd like to be your Beta :)

Find me on Live Journal as lil_miss_maddie, you can also send an email to maybe_madeleine@yahoo.co.uk

Hi there. I'm willing to beta!

I think I'm fairly good at grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, clarification of points (I can be quite slow on the uptake sometimes!). I've also done a lot of writing (and it's only getting better) and am currently enrolled in a Creative Writing Workshop at my University that's helping tighten up prose and, I think, leading to my own writing getting better.

I like to edit and I like Spander. Now isn't that a match made... well, somewhere good?
23rd-Apr-2007 03:50 pm (UTC) - Beta for hire
Hi folks. I'm fast and free. nothing squicks me. Do all the usual checks. love Au stuff. get a bit stumped by timelines in cannon now and then, hence I prefer Au. can turn around a short fic in a few hours. At home most days so usually available short notice. Tell me what you want done and I'll do it. Good with english slang etc.

hello darkhavens and anyone else reading this,

I put my name in as a beta quite a while ago and never got contacted. So I finally got around to checking the Beta page and realized that my email is wrong. So wrong in fact that either I got hit over the head with a plank before I wrote it or internet gremlins have been keeping me from my betaing duties!! Only the Shadow knows... probably because he is responsible.

Either way I, that is to say lebourdon (call me bee), am still totally open to betaing and I can be reached at blasterbee@gmail.com. Who nomad99@shaw.ca is I do not know but I bet they are really confused!!!

bee
p.s. One note please put BETA in the subject heading. That way I will recognize that your email has a higher priority than some of my other fun but truly frivolous emails.

Name :: Dragonfly_64

Preferred genres :: Love Spander. Not really into Daddy!kink or slavery, but if your muse shares them with you, I'll beta them.

Strengths :: “Holes” in story line, clothes mysteriously reappearing once they’ve been removed in a scene, grammar, tenses, spelling, continuity.

Weaknesses :: Foreign languages

Pet peeves :: Characters acting out of character (without explanation); unfinished works :-(

Will beta :: Anything; and will try to turn around as fast as possible

Contact :: e-mail is best dragonfly_64@comcast.net

23rd-Apr-2009 08:22 pm (UTC) - App for Beta
Name :: Bellskie (Pandaberryjam)

Preferred genres :: Most anything, to be honest. I really love Vamp!Xander or Not Human, but I'll go with anything (so long as it's not just PWP)

Strengths :: Plot Points/Holes in the Story, Sentence Structure, Gen Suggestions, Spike's voice, I have a grasp on all seasons of BtVS all comics all of Angel and comics and a majority of the spin off series comics (Fray, Tales of..., ect.)

Weaknesses :: Nothing (laughs), probably small grammar bits that I miss. They're not usually too noticeable, but it happens...

Pet peeves :: Not a huge fan of PWP, same with Daddy!Kink (if it isn't done exceptionally well, mind), people attempting to write in dialect who don't know how to correctly capture the voice, unfinished works or works with endings that don't feel complete.

Will beta :: Most anything. I do prefer betaing for longer fanfiction, though, with multiple parts.
