We're still here! [Jul. 11th, 2009|10:13 am]

I'm very glad to see there are others still here. I know this year has been rough on a lot of people, myself included. I want to say thank you to [info]kitsmeow for all her hard work on this, and to everyone else for hanging in there!

On a happier note, which is part of the reason why my quilting time has been diminished, my husband & I are closing on a house this week. This means I'll have my own sewing room again! =)

Quilt happy, everyone!

April and May blocks [Jun. 24th, 2009|09:17 pm]

I had a bit of time for sewing today, so I put together the April and May blocks. I quite like how the April block turned out, but I'm a little bit iffy about the May one.

Maybe it's just too much of the burgundy fabric that makes me feel meh about this one.

All the blocks so far... )

June's Block of the Month [Jun. 20th, 2009|08:08 pm]

kits_meow
I was just going to post June's block of the month, and was trying to match up the instructions to the pictures I had, and wasn't able to, which is when I figured out that I had made the block incorrectly! (Since I made all the blocks last September but am only posting the instructions as I do the pictures, perhaps that's not suprising.) *ahem*

So, I now have to re-do the block. I should be able to post one of the other blocks from now until September, unfortunately, I had already decided that I was going to change those blocks as well, not they're not cool blocks, but because I've realized in looking at them all, that they're not harmonious with what's been done so far.

So there'll be a slightly longer delay for the June block. Will be up soon!

Sorry I got so behind - I had some (rather serious) family stuff going on - my sister and my brother-in-law by marriage passed on this year.

Anyway, here's April's Block:

While I'm still trying to catch up on the 07-08 Intermediate BoM, I noticed that the current run seems to have petered out at the same point last year's did.... [info]kits_meow, is everything OK?

So I FINALLY found the time to finish one of the myriad quilt tops I have in progress. To save your eyes, I'll put it behind the cut:

don't adjust your monitors, it really is this bright! )
I'll need to pick up something to back it with, but it's ready for sandwiching & to go on the quilt frame! Woot, 1 down, 6 more to go! :)

March Block [Mar. 5th, 2009|03:12 pm]

Today I called in sick to work, slept an extra three hours, watched four episodes of house, plan to play a lot of Super Mario Galaxy, washed clothes and ironed fabric for a few [info]birthday_blocks blocks, and I sewed this block.

Last attempt it came out too small. This attempt it came out too big. But I can live with that and I can live with nipping off some of my points when eventually it gets put into a quilt with sashing or whatever I do with it exactly.

I like the look of this block, especially with the print as the background, if I can call it that, rather than yellow (as it's been in several of the other blocks). Probably just because it draws more attention to the print that way, and I really do like that print. It doesn't show well in photographs, but all the blotches of colour are like fireworks explosions and some of them have gold detailing. It's not really my favourite kind of colours for quilts, but I think it's interesting and that goes a long way for me.

February block [Mar. 4th, 2009|06:28 pm]

I spent quite a while today working on the March block, but everything came out a little too small when I started sewing it together (though I'd actually cut the triangles a little too big) and got frustrated and scraped the parts that were done. I'm going to pick away at finding an easier way to piece it, I think, and then I'll go back to it. Just have to work out the math, and that sucks.

Anyway, I made this sometime in February but forgot to post the picture, so here it is. A nice and simple block.

I didn't take a picture of all the blocks so far (I'll do that maybe whenever there is an even number of blocks) but I think this might turn out to be the yellowest quilt ever. Other than any all yellow quilts anyone might have made...

I didn't realize I hadn't posted the block for February yet! Thanks to [info]clumsy_chord for the (very) gentle reminder.

I don't know about all of you, but at this time of year, I totally get the blahs. I don't want to do anything except eat things that are bad for me and sleep, and wish on spring.

For that reason, I chose a really simple block for February. One that can be whipped up quickly, be painless and hassle-free. )

January Block of the Month
Originally uploaded by hold your spin.
So finally a block I'm actually pretty happy with (except for the corners - the burgundy and the orange really do bad things to one another when they come into close contact).

Anyway, I quite like this block regardless of the placement of the fabrics. Alas, mine came out at least a 1/4-in too big. If I get ambitious at some point, there are a few places where I can sort of... nip and tuck my seams a bit so that it'll close in tighter. I just don't fancy picking it apart right now to do it.

I feel like it took me forever to get around to making this block this month. I guess I got distracted for a while by other shinier things. I need to get myself a small cutting mat though that'd be easy to bring upstairs with my sewing stuff because it seems always like such a hassle to go down to the basement every time I want to cut anything, which makes starting new blocks seem like more of a hassle than it really is.

Anyway, below the cut, blocks so far... )

Happy New Year! [Jan. 18th, 2009|08:24 pm]

The Parents have gone home, the dining table has been freed up and the sewing machine has come back out. Life is now somewhat back to a semblance of normality...

I must say that one thing I do enjoy about this community is seeing other people's work, how the same block can look so different just by changing the colour or value of the fabric; and it's also given me the opportunity to take a step away from my more usual fabric choices and usages. I'm definitely looking forward to the next block!
