Suspicions Confirmed re Blind_tards

A quick look at the blind_tards Yahoogroup page, specifically the message history, confirms something I had already suspected. This is not a new list. It was created sometime last year. Between the list's creation and last Thursday, there was a grand total of one message posted to the list. Between Thursday and now, there have been eighty. The page also indicates there are 18 new members, although it doesn't indicate since when. There is no advertising like free advertising, and these boneheads got it in spades. Clearly, either they hadn't bothered to do any promotion of their precious list, or they didn't have the cojones to do it. Frankly, I suspect the latter. The job was done quite nicely for them. I still think it will flame out rather quickly, once the novelty wears off. I don't think it's worth sending demands to Yahoo that the list be shut down, as some have suggested. First of all, repulsive as the matter is, I think it would set a bad precedent, and besides Yahoo wouldn't do it anyway. Let's just let these folks crawl back under their rock. As I see it, the best defense is ignorance.

HI KL, I read this post first and then had to read the rest of my f-page to get down to the original post here about the list. While I did not and will not check it out, I do believe you are right in your suggestion and approach. There are probably a ton of lists on yahoogroups and google and smartgroups bashing and making fun of all kinds of types of people. (Did that make sense?) :) Not much can be done about it and if there are too many complaints against these things, we run the risk of having the listserves stopped altogether or having very stringent rules. If these 19 folks want to talk trash about blind people, well, the best thing we can do is to not check out their website, not read the archives and not advertise it around for others to see. JMHO for whatever it's worth.
Thanks for putting it so well. I concur a hundred percent.

I don't take the group on Yahoogroups very seriously. If I didn't have better things to do with my life, I might join it and see what they say. But, I don't think a group with the name blind tards is going to be taken very seriously. Let this one go.

Something tells me this was all a joke made by some random blind person. It's too out right rude for it to be real. The wording of the discription seems forced, and I agree that it was probably started by someone who is blind. If it truly were a hate group, I think it would have been approached differently. Just my thoughts, for whatever there worth.

I also took a look at this list and I was in disbelief at what I saw, these people had the nerve to bash the bline. They obviously have a lot of growing up to do. The group should be discontinued. I think it's terrable that people bash anyone different from their own. People's differences are what makes this country so unique and special. I work with developmentally disabled people and I get very upset when people bash that population.

Why should it be shut down? Because the purpose of the list is unpleasant or offensive? What if I found a subject near and dear to somebody else's heart to be offensive and sought to have it silenced. I doubt it would be taken to very kindly. I think all this list is is a place where some particularly politically incorrect people went to vent where they wouldn't be threatened with unsubscription because they offended the majority. It's not some neo-Nazi plot and they don't seem to be calling every last blind person "'tards." Leave them be and don't give them the reaction you know they want.

This is true, but I can't see how making fun of people would be near and dear to anyone's heart, except for maybe the immature. Look what we have been talking about on the blindpeople community these past few weeks. We have said how it isn't nice to cut people down and since I'm in full agreement with that belief, I feel they're wrong. Personally, I'm not going to do anything about the group, but it is still wrong.

I have yet to meet any human being who lives up to these ideals of maturity everybody talks about. Some people are just too politically incorrect for most people, and I think this list was created in reaction to how some of the bigger blindness chatter e-mail lists are. I've been on lots of them myself. Maybe some other e-mail list veteran can comment and expand on what I'm saying here.
