Hi, I hope I don't step on any toes, but I have a question. I have sent in an updated Ichigo Application, which now makes two of them which you have. I'm just wondering if you have put any sort of vote on it. If not, let me know and I'll apply for another character. I just really want to play.

You have a great game and I have a lot of good characters that I think would flourish on it. I have a lot of free time and I love role playing and I completely understand that I would start out on the lowest rung, I am fine with that. That is what I want. Not only that, and I do not mean to be bold, but I'm certain that my characters will provide intricate plots and reactions, they are worthwhile.

Make sure to talk to me about playing Ichigo too, I would love to.

NAMING YOUR JAPANESE CHARACTER: Some techniques by example

    Picking a name for your OC character is important, and unless you're coming up with a foreign sounding name chances are you're working with a language which is very different and not entirely familiar from what you know. Even with a layman's knowledge of the Japanese language, I can tell if you just slapped a few syllables together to attempt a Japanese name... and chances are other players can tell too. So here are a few tips I have to offer with my experience on naming Japanese characters.

    Before we begin, I must advise that I do not have any formal instruction on the Japanese language. Whatever information I have provided is a result of research, and those who are better versed in the language are more than welcome to share their personal input and guidance. If necessary, I will make revisions accordingly. In no way do I intentionally mean to present myself as an end-to-all authority of Japanese names.

    That said, let's move on to more information on Japanese names. In Japan, names legally registered consist of a very specific kanji list titled "Jinmeiyo". This list, regulated by the Ministry of Justice, consists of 983 kanji characters. For a list of these kanji characters, please refer to this Wikipedia entry. Names of fictional characters often don't apply to this rule. Fictional characters are free to have any kanji character assigned to their name (or a lack thereof), which allows for a wide variety of name meanings and interpretations such as puns.

    So where to begin? I suggest you complete your OC, or at least get the person's personality down in words. Unless you have a particularly direct concept in mind for for your character, this will make your OC much more easier to name.

    You must consider the type of faction your OC belongs to. If you have a regular human character (or recently dead rukongai residents/shinigami), you may want to stick to very plain names and more current ('80s ~ '90s) naming trends in Japan. For these characters, you'll want to use names of real people, "baby name" pages, and the jinmeiyo kanji list. Let's have a look at my human OC as an example: Katsushika Ryoko. Let's have a look at the kanji I've selected for her:

    There are a few naming techniques at work here. First off, Ryoko is meant to be a very plain character. She has no sense of kidou whatsoever, and could easily become a statistic if encountered by a hollow. She is a police officer by profession, but is something of a rather unambitious person. For her, I did not take name meaning into consideration. This is one prime example of Japanese given names just plain not making sense. Translated quite literally, this is her name: 葛 (arrowroot), 飾 (ornament), 亮 (clear), 子 (child). If you've ever seen an arrowroot, you'd know that plant is far from decorative. What are we supposed to make of clear-child, anyway? Sometimes, names are picked to sound better than their meaning.

    Also, I selected this name as a nod to one of SHONEN JUMP's longest serialized series: Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kouen-mae Hashutsujo (こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所). The premise of the manga is the weekly misadventures starring a police officer named Ryotsu (両津... note, the same kanji for Ryo was not borrowed into Ryoko's name). Unfortunately I was a little short sighted since KochiKame is pretty much unknown to the English-speaking fanbase. I think more people would be reminded of the character from Tenchi Muyo!, Ryoko (魎呼... very different, off the wall kanji).

    So where'd I get the kanji for Ryoko's name? I literally googled "Ryoko" and took a bunch of results from what was returned to me. I wanted the last character to be "子", because she is 24 years old. Up until the mid 80's in Japan, using the kanji "子" in a girl's name was very common. As for "亮"? I can't quite remember. I thought it just looks good.

    Every so often I get requests to help with names. One OC name I helped out with had been "Watanabe Daisuke". Here's the name in nice, fancy script:

I was requested to come up with a very cut-and-dry plain name. "Watanabe Daisuke" was merely an alias the character used while working in Japan (where he, unfortunately, met his untimely end). Watanabe is Japan's 5th most common surname, and I selected the most commonly used kanji associated with the name. Coincidentally, I recently found out the name meant "cross border"... a very fitting name meaning for a foreigner! "Daisuke" is also a very popular male's name in Japan. I used the same technique as I did with Ryoko to find kanji for the name: looked up Daisuke, and selected a name of a person from his age group, 30's. It should be noted that "-suke" is now a very popular element in male names now, but commonly uses the kanji "助" instead of "輔".

So if this is all starting to make sense, let's move onto something more challenging. If your OC is a member of the shinigami faction, you might want to elect to use more uncommon and flashy names, especially if your character's been dead for more than 50 ~ 75 years. Let's have a look at my academy student's name: Miyake Yae.

    Miyake Yae died relatively recently, but lived among a rather offbeat family of criminals... thus why I chose a more unusual name for her. The name "Yae" appears every now and then on baby naming sites, but I actually drew the name from a particular kabuki play. Taking names or name elements from kabuki is very common in fictional manga names, especially those which take place in Japanese settings or have a sort of "old Japan" flair to them. The main character's name was Yaegaki-hime, and the plot involved her death. Her ghost eventually performed a dance before her still living fiancee to warn him of an oncoming attack, and her guidance lead his troops to victory.

    I chose Miyake for her surname because it is a very common last name in Tokyo, her hometown. The kanji breakdown of her last name is 宮 (shrine), 家 (house, family). I thought this name seemed to have a sort of Shintoist flair to it, in contrast to Yae's personal practice of Buddhist meditation.

    Her first name's kanji was chosen in favor of meaning. 八 (eight) and 衛 (defense, protection). I figured "衛" was very fitting for a shinigami-to-be, even if I originally thought this kanji might seem too complex for Yae's more simplistic and laid-back attitude.

    Now, let's move onto an even more offbeat individual: Hineno Chomei. Here's his kanji:

Hineno Chomei

    This poor fellow had no less than 20 potential names before I finally settled on Hineno Chomei. He is a very peculiar man by personality. This guy's best friend is an eel. His character's concept for zanpakuto and shikai is based upon a legendary phenomenon which occurs in the Mekong River (formerly Siam, now Thailand). He has been dead for hundreds of years, so I had to wrestle between either giving him a Thai/Siamese name, or a Japanese name. Unfortunately, the resources for Thai/Siamese names are very few and far between, so I decided to stick to what I'm best at.

    I wanted to select a Japanese name which looked more peculiar than most Japanese names, and one which would strike even English-speakers as odd. On the contrary to "Most Common Japanese Surnames", I could not find any lists of uncommon surnames. First off, I considered names from the Hokkaido or Okinawa regions, but after looking among many lists I found the perfect surname: Hineno.

    To select the kanji for Hineno, I went on a random streak and simply typed 'Hineno' into my Japanese word processor. "日根野" was the first result and I stuck with it. Here's a breakdown of these kanji characters, as they seem to have no particular meaning together: 日 (sun), 根 (root), 野 (field). Also take notice how this surname consists of three kanji instead of the typical two.

    "Cho" and "mei" seemed to me as elements of names which aren't entirely too common in Japanese names, but seemed more from a Southeast Asian origin (to me, at least). Selecting kanji for his name was a field day. "著明" was one of the first potential results, but "著明" means "clarity" and Chomei is far from understandable. "著名" was the next choice, meaning "well known" or "noted", and its hard for Chomei to simply blend in with a crowd. I disregarded both sets and decided to break up his name by "Cho" (not Chou) and "-mei". Ultimately, I selected the kanji "著" and "迷". Kanji breakdown for his first name: 著 (famed), 迷 (illusion/be perplexed). ...yeah.

    As for the Arrancar faction, you're on your own there. The names for Arrancar vary and tend to be outside of the Japanese scope of naming trends.

    Speaking as an application administrator for this game, I truly appreciate the same amount of effort put into naming your characters as you'd put into their personality or history. We all have to stare at that name over and over again in game anyway, and I'm sure everyone appreciates a well thought out, fitting or witty name. I believe the stat range for students is 0-15, while teachers are 15-40. You can set a number above the alotted stat range provided you have good enough reason to.

IC: Current Happenings

Here's what's going on currently, so we're all on the same page.

Ichigo and friends have returned to Karakura after their trip to Soul Society, following Aizen's defection from Seireitei with Tousen and Gin -- Aizen is also in possession of the hougyoku, as per the manga. Toushirou, Momo, and Kira were recently ambushed in Karakura by Stark, with Toushirou and Kira sustaining serious injuries. Following this, Ulquiorra has made his first visit to retrieve information on Ichigo, with the bonus of discovering Orihime's powers as well. Grimmjow has NOT made his unauthorized visit yet, but don't panic, it will happen immediately after the Karakura deployments, which I will go into in a second.

What this means for everyone:

Shinigami -- Toushirou has been given leave to establish a permanent foothold in Karakura to watch over the living world, and has been given leave to choose several officers of his choice to follow his command, beyond his Vice Captain. Byakuya and Renji will be rotating shifts with Toushirou and Rangiku, as well as any officers Byakuya chooses to accompany him. Byakuya, Toushirou, I leave this up to you. The rotation time will begin at two weeks; this is to give players a chance at scenes in both areas of the grid, and more chances to play all around.

Mayuri has been given leave to come and go freely between Seireitei for research purposes, and is free to take what resources he needs to accomplish this, including Nemu.

Aizen's arrancar will be ambushing low-ranking shinigami that are using the senkaimon gates while traveling from Seireitei to Karakura before and after this deployment. These shinigami will likely be fulfilling requests for provision and equipment deliveries, or answering medical calls if from the 4th. At first they will simply disappear in transport; after leaving Seireitei they will simply never show up to report for duty in Karakura, while the officers stationed in both Karakura and Seireitei will be left to discover the cause -- at first they are likely to assume the shinigami are being taken after arrival, instead of during. After the first handful of disappearances, expect to be finding dead bodies.

Arrancar -- Aizen has plenty of missions available for players of this faction; seek him out OOCly or ICly for deployments or missions based on the above and his own personal plans.

The Academy -- At the time of these deployments the students will be in their second or third month of the school year. Currently, a lot of what's going on doesn't affect the world of the Academy, moreso for the new students who have arrived this year after Aizen's defection. Talk still travels about the going-ons, and students are more than welcome to ask teachers about the rumors, but such happenings still probably seem far away from the Academy itself. Teacher players are still responsible for organizing classes. Expect more to be happening here soon, but continue about your daily lives. It's still a secret for now. :)

The 3rd Phantom

The new Bleach game coming out for Nintendo DS - The 3rd Phantom - has a storyline written by Kubo and some new characters. I took some screenshots of the new characters and uploaded them for lazy people. :D

A large part of this game takes place in the past, when Urahara was a captain, Yoruichi was still official head ninja, and Aizen was a vice-captain. :D This is his boss:

Matsuri & Fujimaru travel to the future from that time, learn from Ichigo that Aizen is a huge jerk, and then go back to stop him. (lol right.)

Kusaka, from that Diamond Dust Rebellion movie thing, is a slimy jerk and he is also in this game. Here is a picture of him planning to sell crack cocaine to little schoolchildren:

3rd FC Clause

At this time we would like to go back to the old 3rd FC clause. Players may app a 2nd FC one month after their first. A 3rd FC may be applied for after two months. The conditions of this are as follows:

- Characters on the 'Minor FC list' do not count towards the standard 2 FCs per player rule
- Minor FCs must still be applied for
- No player is granted a 3rd FC (minor or otherwise) unless they are very active on their alts already. This condition is extremely important. We will look at log-in times, IC activity, and general interaction. I absolutely will not grant a 3rd FC to someone who has a tendency to character squat.

Below is the Minor FC list. Be aware that this list may be forced to change as the manga progresses. I also understand that some characters are difficult to declare minor or major in terms of importance; if you have any revisions to propose, please do so.

The time has come to revamp the website and make way for a more wintery / festive / something layout, and since I'll be in the process of reorganizing the site itself, I'm coming to you guys in regards to that. Is there anything any of you believe you would benefit from seeing on the site? More details here or there? Something new entirely? The website is for the benefit of the players, after all, and it's up to you guys what you want to see on it. I can't stress enough that you shouldn't be afraid to suggest things.

IC Policy

Please make yourselves familiar with the +ooc, +ic, and ooc commands. The files on each are located at +help +ic, +help +ooc, +help ooc. I will be allowing a one day grace period for everyone to learn these commands, after which they must be used whenever you are outside of the OOC areas. The OOC areas include the welcome room, the setup room, and the quiet room.

To be more specific, when you leave the OOC areas, please set either +ic or +ooc, depending on what you intend to do on the IC grid. If, for example, you are working on @descing a room, or writing @mail, or just relaxing in your character's home and paging out to friends, set +ooc. If you are lingering on the IC grid and trying to tempt lurkers out for RP scenes, set +ic.

Furthermore, when you are out on the IC grid, use the OOC channel to chat. For those who are unfamiliar with it, the OOC channel communicates only with those in the same room as yourself. You are able to set up your ooc header with customized ANSI, as reviewed in +help ooc. Far, far too many people have been confused by OIC chatter on the IC grid and are unable to tell who is taking what as 'actually IC,' and those conditions are unacceptable.

TO REVIEW: As of tomorrow, begin using +ic and +ooc religiously, use the ooc channel for OOC chatter on the IC grid (or the public channel, whichever suits you.) I will begin breaking anyone who breaks this policy in 24 hours. Dissenters will be likewise broken.

Iwao-Sensei's Crash Course for the Kids

It is assumed by this point every new student has had their run in with Iwao to get their assignment. Everyone has been given partners that they are to train with when they both have time to help improve themselves so they can complete their assignment. That assignment? To disarm Iwao of his weapon. There is no real rules. People can gang up and attack Iwao whenever they wish. (IE: Page/@mail Iwao or Hoozukimaru for a scene) He was even so nice as to point out where most of his time is spent. If there is any questions please contact me for further info.
