Why would I? No, I'm curious to where you're coming from on this, I don't get why it should be a joke.

it is my personal belief

first of all don't tell me I don't appreciate my heritage or history, because I have a lot of appreciation for it
Black History Month is a load of bogus to me because I believe that instead of bringing down ignorance, it just promotes it
I don't think we as a group of people need a national month to celebrate our history when we should be celebrating it everyday, that's what I call embracing our history(that goes for every other group of people out there as well)
do you see an Asian history month? a hispanic history month? no, you do not.
Before we jump up and try to get EVERYONE to embrace the history of our people, we should be trying to get all black people to embrace it first, and that should be all that matters
and once more black people show an interest in it(and trust me, a majority of us do not), then maybe more people of other races and ethnicities will have interest in it
confining our history to a month makes it seem less important than it is, which is why i'm against it

but giving a month to something people had no interest in before actually increases the interest by 100%

sorry, but I totally disagree and highly doubt that
from my observations, if the interest is increased, it's probably just for February alone, because all of the sudden, teachers in school start talking about black history, they hardly even cover any of it, only the most major stuff and not really anything inbetween, and after february is over, they stop
thank goodness this year for History I have a really good teacher. she heavily emphasizes black history and slavery throughout the whole year, and manages to talk about some asian and hispanic history as well as the old white men

1) There IS an Asian history month and a Hispanic history month

2) Most kids don't get the type of curriculum which acknowledges the accomplishments, history, or struggle of African-Americans, so having a bit of time to actually learn about it and not old white men does educate those who are ignorant to a large aspect of US hitory.

well sorry but I didn't know, and that kind of proves my point even further about the history of a group of people or culture seeming less significant if it's importance and interest is crammed into a month

and yes, that is very true, and that's one of the few positives of black history month
personally I think history should be divided up into many different courses, American History, Religious History, International History, Ethnic History, Ancient Civilization History, etc....
that's the only way every aspect of history can gain decent exposure in my opinon
but most education systems can't afford to do this I understand, but I wish there were more history teachers who were like my current one

Are you up-to-date on most of your Black History? I'm not trying to be snarky I don't understand the anger behind there being a Black History Month. If anything, it seems displaced.

Designating one month as Black History or Hispanic History or Asian/Pacific Islander history or First Nations history or Women's Month (yes, there is a month for all of these and I think more groups than I remember off the top of my head) is a small step towards having these histories incorporated into the Eurocentric history focus as there is now. If anything, you should direct your anger at that - that Eurocentric history is seen as "standard" and everything else as "extra", which is, of course not the case, even more obvious as the world becomes more and more interconnected.

I think that you should be angry at the focus on white/European heritage, instead of angry at the steps taken to correct that.

the fact that history focuses on Europeans and/or white history is EXACTLY what i'm angry at, but the reason why i'm also angry towards these steps that are being taken to correct that is because of the bad execution
don't get me wrong, VERY good intentions, but bad execution, there are other ways to correct this issue, as I said earlier, using a month to celebrate the history of a certain culture or group of people just makes it seem less important than it really is

"I think that you should be angry at the focus on white/European heritage, instead of angry at the steps taken to correct that."

Now that you say this, the whole argument sounds an awful lot like ones about affirmative action I've heard.

Clumsy solutions can be frustrating, but unless you've got something better to propose...

There's a lot of potential power behind it, but I haven't seen it being used. I think whenever someone mentions that it's a joke, they're meaning how nobody takes it seriously. It feels like the month is treated with as much reverence as the people it's named after.

I miss the old presidnet's day celebrations...sales...

anyway...I'm glad a bunch of new research resources get shoved under my nose for a month each year, and I have always enjoyed helping the University I work for change over the seasonal displays to Black History Month. Fredrick Douglas was some kind of UGLY

Booker T is more to my liking, and Dred Scot would have been handsome if only some one had fed him better and put him in decent clothes.

Make Black History every day, I don't need a month - Kanye West

I celebrate Kwanzaa and we look at Black love and unity to be our focus every day of the year. Holla!
