style blog test drive.
i read the style blog post, and a recent article in Bust magazine that mentioned some of the same blogs that showed up in blackcigarette comments -- great stuff.

I'm test driving a thrifty style blog, titled "style on a reporter's budget."

sunglasses: $8 no-name brand at Buffalo Exchange, tank: $9 banana republic at BufEx, shorts: $14 lux at BufEx, socks: $10 at Urban, shoes: $25 bongo at sears.

jewelry: $5 at target, blouse: $8 banana republic at BufEx, skirt: part of a $150 Kaspar suit, shoes: about $75 kenzie at footsies.

I love reading BUST! For some reason I can never find it at the local bookstores here, I really wanted last month's copy for their beautiful spread of the guys from Flight of the Conchords in all their Teenbeat fashion.

I like your shoes in the first pic. They're purdy. :)

I'm a reporter for The Courier of Montgomery County, just north of Houston. My best advice for a student is to get on the college newspaper staff and contribute, contribute, contribute. If you don't have a college paper, try to do freelance work for the local paper. Also, get an internship. Newspaper editors will only see your college coursework as a minimum requirement -- you really need clips to get them to pay any attention to you.

When you're ready to jobhunt, go to www.journalismjobs.com and search for some entry-level reporter positions. Also look at newspaper websites and try to find their employment section. If you have clips, you might be able to get into some that ask for a year or two of experience. Don't be afraid to try big papers, but unless you have amazing credentials your best bets will be smaller dailies. Don't go to a weekly if you can avoid it. Good luck!

Oh crazy. Yeah here's some background: I actually lived in the woodlands (gag) from when i was 9 till i was 13. then i moved around texas a bit, went to State University of New York in New Paltz for my freshman year of college, but missed Texas (why? who knows) and transferred to Texas State. I worked at the University Star on their entertainment staff. You should definitely try to get on there. My editors were not that great at guiding my writing, however, so if you want to get the most out of it, try to pattern your style after actual newspapers like the New York Times.

Out of college I got a job at The Galveston County Daily News in G-town as their editorial assistant. My boss was a completely heinous harpy of a woman, and I didn't get to do as much reporting as I'd hoped, so I started looking elsewhere and got a job at the Courier in February. Conroe's taking some getting used to...its the smallest town I've lived in so far. But I kind of dig it in its own way.

why do you say to not go to a weekly? i am also a journalism student, but i don't wanna be a hard news reporter. even though i know i gotta put in some time doing it.

yeah, actually that comment was a bit misguided on my part. there's nothing wrong with weekly papers; they deliver local news well in areas that aren't big enough to support their own daily. alternative presses are also great examples of good weekly papers. the only people who should avoid them are the ones who want to go into hard news and stay there, moving up the ladder to bigger city papers as they go. weeklies are a good fit for people who want more time to delve into a subject or spend more time on developing the writing style of a piece, which is definitely a good goal.

I have to agree. Even if your camera isn't that great, stand up against a plain wall and edit contrast etc on your computer, already that will make it x100000 times better.

I like the second outfit, but the first one kind of looks you're dressing up as Lara Croft.

I agree. I think you should definitely at least probably have a blank background or a pretty, but natural looking one.

Sweet! Yeah, I'm always super excited whenever I find another reporter on the Internet, even though I'm relatively new to the industry. Plus, you seem pretty cool. :)
