the road less travelled
usually when people go travelling, their itineraries consist of only the big sights - the tour d'eiffel, leaning tower of pisa, big ben, the parthenon, the great wall...

but what about the places that people opt to miss out on in favor of the bigger tourist attractions? which out of the way countries, places, and sights have you seen? where would you go?

people don't only go to the big sights! there are hundreds of places in the world i'd like to see and most of them aren't big cities or tourist spots, and i think that's true for most people i know. on the other hand, i've been to the cristo redentor, fallingwater, crater lake, and riomaggiore, and i wouldn't really consider them out of the way, but they were absolutely incredible none the less. i can't even tell you how inspiring these pictures are to me, thanks for finding all of them.

i think my favorite places to visit that aren't hugely popular are the redwood forests in northern california. the avenue of the giants in humboldt redwoods state park and jedediah smith state park especially. the more remote parts of northern california like humboldt county, mendocino county, and trinity county are all really beautiful and i feel lucky that i get to go there so often.

Growing up in Northern California made me kind of unimpressed by the redwood forests but now I have this urge to go back! My family rented a vacation house a few times in the spring up in Mendocino county and it was lovely but I was too young to really appreciate it. I was more concerned with how winding the road was heading up there and how carsick I got! But now I want to go back, so I'll probably head back up and visit Crater Lake as well; it looks beautiful.

Okay, usually when I travel I do go to the touristic things. I mean, there's a reason those things are popular.

But I can recommend some places I've been that are less traveled.

Instead of Venice go to Burano

And when people travel South or Central America they usually skip Panama, while it's scuh a great country and: not yet discovered by tourists! So you get to have devine beaches all for yourself:

Probably the prettiest country I've visited has been Belgium. I love the people there and the architecture, and the FOOD! My favorite place I visited there was an old monastery in Brussels thats now defunct. There were amazing archways and cobblestone walkways. And the trees form a canopy. Go in July!

Another favorite spot of mine is Germany. I've visited mostly the South Western part of the country (Rheinland-Phalz, Saarland, and Baden-Wurttemburg). A few really great places to visit are Idar-Oberstein, Trier (The Basilica, The Roman baths, the "Gate" ), Mainz (for the shopping), Heidelberg (the hidden chapel in the castle is unbelievable), and my "second home" Neustadt-an-der-Weinstrasse (the absolute best red wines I've tasted. Yeah, I said it. Their red wine is better than any in France. Suck it).

I'm at work, otherwise I'd post pictures of the places I've visited. If anyone else has been to these places in Germany, lets swap stories. I miss it there so much.

i actually was at that very mosque in cordoba, spain last week! it's breathtaking, and is actually used as a catholic church now, as most old spanish mosques were converted to churches after the end of arabic rule in spain.

also incredible was the tiny town of ronda, spain. hemingway used to chill here all the time:

and the alhambra palace in granada (also a product of islamic rule in spain):

and even though i am partial because i live there, every winding, twisted alleyway in barcelona's barri gotic:

oops, i got kind of carried away :/

this is nice because i am a terribly untraveled Canadian girl...i do know of a lovely tourist attraction in Alberta, Canada...the Banff Springs Hotel (banff itself is amazing). People apparently come from all over to stay there, ski and see the rockies.... The hotel is beautiful, a castle..Marilyn Monroe has stayed there, as did the queen.

The pictures are gorgeous ! I love Flickr, you always find the most talented photographers there !

I'd love to learn driving barges, and then have a tour of France via its canals. It's so original. I live in France, but I think it would be very interesting to see the country on a different angle. You know, I always take my car, or the train, or whatever, but travelling on a barge must be pretty awesome. It's so slow, you have all your time to admire the landscapes, it must pretty fun to be stopped on a lock... Well, that's my dream.

This is an absolutely amazing post!

I think one of the most wonderful places I've ever visited was Bernkastel-Kues here in Germany. It took two trains and a bus to reach, but was worth it - especially with a Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) going on at the time. Unfortunately my own pictures are film only, so here's one from somewhere else:

i would love to visit non-touristy places in the world but unfortunately i'm afraid of being unwelcome. as i'm not white, i feel like i wouldn't have a lovely experience. it sucks so bad. i'd love to have any kind of experience (good or bad) but i need the courage to be able to go for it. racism/discrimination/etc is something i can't really handle and i have a large suspicion that in europe and asia, a dark-skinned perosn like me will have a less pleasant experience than someone who is white (especially in europe).

Racism is just awful. Grrr. I hope you do decide to travel though because it is so worth the experience.
Come to Bavaria, Germany for example. I live here in a small village and even here you find the occasional dark-skinned person. And nobody really cares. :-) You might get the occasional look or some idiots trying to hit on you (but then again those type of guys hit on anything with boobs and ass).
