LOMO + BOSTON + BLOGS [19 nov 09 @ 9:35am ]

North End, Boston

Darlings,

I haven't posted in forever! But here's what's changed--I shaved off half of my head à la Kate Lanphear, started taking more pictures with my Diana and started working for a fashion tv show in Boston. I'm interviewing the Director of Tiffany's tomorrow. Any idea as to what sort of questions I should ask him?

What's changed since the last time you've posted (in 1 sentence!)? Anyone else here adore Lomography? Post up your favorite pics!

And to anyone in Boston who loves fashion: let's be friends, i want to collaborate with other bloggers as i'm planning tons of contests for the show.

Honeybees. [05 nov 09 @ 6:19pm ]

[ music | Shivers - Beauty ]

Oh, hello. I'm not-exactly-new but I've never gotten around to posting an introduction. Anyway, I'm sure I'll correct that later.

I'm reading 'The Hive: The Story of the Honeybee and Us' by Bee Wilson which describes the history of honey, honeybees and the human relationship to them. Honey has been described as the food of the gods and that honeybees could gather it (they didn't understand it was bee spit back then) because they were human souls reincarnated which seems like an impossibly lovely thing to believe. Less tasty are the stories about how honey was used to perserve dormice by the Romans and beeswax was used to reviginise ladies of ill-repute.

She also talks about all the wonderful different types of honey and how they are also affected by the flowers and place they are made. I'm going on a search for some tupelo honey tomorrow! I've only had acacia which apparently is a very mild honey...but I love the idea of how you can taste the place honey came from when you eat it.

This got me thinking about how many other foodstuffs that people claim to be conessiours of so my question is: what are your food passions? What combinations make you curl up your toes in bliss? Do you make your own jam or brew your own beer (or mead!)? What makes you go 'hmmm'? Are these things seasonal or not?

Halloween 2009. [31 oct 09 @ 10:11pm ]

literique
I know there were a couple of posts this week about Halloween but since Halloween is this weekend, and most people will be taking photos of thier outfits, I thought it'd be fun to make a post for everyone to show off what they've come up with. So I would love to see all your Halloween outfits and make-up this year!

My outfit. I went as a Sugar Skull/Day of the Dead lady. I went to a brilliant Mexican market in San Antonio this year when I was visiting my boyfriend/friends in Texas. Needless to say, sugar skulls aren't very popular in Northern Ireland (where I am right now) so I don't think a lot of people got it. I'm using this photo as part of my 365 project I'm doing on my blog, where I'll hopefully put the rest of my Halloween snaps up soon.

SHOW ME YOUR STUFF!

Ages ago I saw a post about children's books. And it was ages ago, but putting this together took much longest than I was expecting. Mostly because I am lazy and photobucket wasn't co-operating. BUT I wanted to share these with you, because I think they are among the most beautiful illustrations I have ever seen in children’s books.

They are from a series of books of East African folk tales re-written for children by "Mwenye Hadithi" and illustrated by Adrienne Kennaway. I think they are just so beautiful and incredibly joyful and happy. I loved these books as a child and I love them even more now.

Please: share your favourite book illustrations and folktales.

ME

So I figured it was about time for an introduction.
My name is Paula, I just moved back to Santa Cruz, CA last August from Braselton, GA where I lived for roughly ten years.
I'm struggling to get into school, working at a drug store, and dreaming constantly.

My influences change from day to day. Lets just say I'm obsessed by anything creative.
I feel strongly in a very personal way about music and traditional art, though I am myself not proficient at either nor particularly knowledgeable in an academic sense. I do however enjoy the appreciating and doing of both. And very recently have been trying my hand at acting in community theater.
I'm a very accepting person and it takes alot to get me to disagree strongly in any sort of philosophical debate, or argument of taste. I abhor elitism and love an open mind.

I'd like to say it's been a pleasure to get to know you ladies (some gents) in the limited fashion that this community has allowed. To hear from so many people from so many varied backgrounds is very exciting. I know thats what the internet is all about, but I'm not the most net savy and don't spend what I consider to be "alot" of time online.

The rundown of cut and paste personlaity under the cut.

In response to this post regarding feminism (I've been getting worked up lately about people's abhorrent rejection of the sheer word feminist, but I digress), I would like to offer just A FEW of the reasons why I dedicate my life to this field of study, beginning with a past professor's "Working Definition of Feminism."

What is feminism? )

My sweet, short, and simple definition of feminism? Compassion.

Feminism [29 oct 09 @ 5:18pm ]

Hello! I've never posted here before so I'm a little scared! I just wanted to get other peoples opinions on Feminism. Do you consider yourself a feminist? I know many girls agree with equal rights for women but are afraid to call themselves Feminists because of all the stereotypes of feminism. I am an Anthropology major and Women and Gender Studies Minor so I definetly consider myself a feminist. Do you?

Here is a link to my blog that I am working on for my class, Inscribing Gender on the body. I am addressing issues of the fashion industry and feminism. Take a Look! briana89nicole.blogspot.com

I need some help! [27 oct 09 @ 9:54pm ]

Hey there, I'm Astrid. I have an art midterm coming up and I need to do a twelve-piece portrait series. I'm hoping to follow the theme of Halloween, but since these are just facial portraits (with some hair/hat room), I'm having trouble finding interesting enough images.

Post photos of yourself or others with awesome Halloween makeup or outfits that you could recognize from just the head?

Thanks!

(my costume last year:)

Also, I've been writing music my whole life and only just stopped being shy for just long enough to make a music myspace. Now it's out there and I'm having difficulty finding friends... I don't want to just message-spam a bunch of strangers.
Add me if you like my stuff? It would mean the world to me.

Help Me Find a camera? [18 oct 09 @ 11:06am ]

gramophonemusic
For a long time I stopped taking digital photos. I had access to a large stash of polaroid film (bought for $1 a pack) and the photos my friends and family took sufficed for commemorating occasions. But the polaroid film has run out and I'm about to go to Australia and I'm realizing I need to buy a digital camera, but its been so long of not taking photographs that when I look at descriptions of cameras I can't even figure out some of the terminology. Photography isn't where my artistic energy goes (obviously) so what I'm looking for is something easy to use that gives me good quality photos (I'm old fashioned, so I'll probably print quite a few photos). I don't care about too many features, and quite honestly I would probably find them frustrating and unsettling, but I do want accurate colour representation, since Australia seems to have that insane red/blue landscape. On account of my plane ticket being $3,000 my camera can't cost the world (under $250, definitely). I would appreciate any feedback on a nice little camera, because right now I feel a bit like Dorothy Parker

After a killer weekend which left me feeling a little blue... I was touching some photos up on Photoshop for college work. I just had an all over feel good factor when I was looking at my photos from my summer day out at Auchingarrich. I'm using the photos for one of my sketchbooks as its all based around birds which I'm hoping my teacher will like. There are a few that aren't of birds I know, but the meerkat is so cute! My boyfriend is also holding a chick which I thought I'd throw in for the memories. :)

So what makes you feel automatically happy and why?

Day Out at Auchingarrich )

I was also wondering if anyone here had been to Oslo before? I'm going next month for a weekend with friends and we're looking for cool places/shops etc to visit! Thanks for all the tips on Brighton, I'm leaving tomorrow and can't wait!

EDINBURGH )
some photographs to share.

i just moved to london to continue my studies, and some time back i visited my friend up in scotland. i enjoyed the city, it isn't as pretty as some other places i've been to but it has a very fresh, yet ironically old vibe to the area. i think it's a great place to unwind in and rediscover old charms. i spent quite a lot of time exploring the nooks and crannies and i made some very pleasant finds such as secret lavender gardens and buildings hidden within buildings. the view up from the peaks, together with the wind just whistling through your hair is inspiring too. highly recommended for your getaway.

Antichrist. [21 oct 09 @ 12:58pm ]

meow_box

So on Saturday night I watched a bootlegged copy of the most controversial film at the Cannes Festival this year, Antichrist. Staring Willem Defoe and Charolette Gainsbourg (who won best actress for her role in the film) with a few friends.

It deeply disturbed me. The scenes of abnormal sexual behavior and sexual violence, genital self mutilation, and bizzare animism made me naseaus and near fainting. I walked away from the last ten minutes because I felt so sick. I did not sleep, that night, or the next. At first I wasn't certain I would ever sleep again. It was all I could think about. At first my entire mission was to discourage people from seeing this film.

As the fear and paranoia mounted in my pysche I realized that it was in fact, an incredible film. A powerful, thought provoking film. If something could cause me to react so strongly, and enveloped me so entirely, then it was undoubtedly an impressive piece of art. True art.
So in order to come to terms with the imagery and ideas that had dominated my brain for four days I immersed myself in it. I learned everything I could about it.
I talked about it incessantly with anyone who would listen. Took what they thought of it having never seen the film.
I read it's wiki which gives a play by play of the film which helped me reconcile the plot, I read interviews with director Lars Van Trier and the actors. I watched clips of the press reactions from the festival. (There was huge outrage at the festival that the film was misogynistic, pointless and made purely for shock value.)
I tried researching the metaphors apparent in the film and finally settled on regrouping the people I watched it with for a viewing of the thirty minute press conference from the day it showed at Cannes with the the director, actors and producer, then having a formal discussion on what the film meant to each of us.
We were all impressed immensely by Van Trier's (and his actors) unrelenting confidence and protection of his right to make and show his film. The very first question ask of him was "For my benifit, and all of ours, I want you to explain and justify why you made this film, and please give more than a one word answer." He replied by saying that he felt the auidence here were his guests, not the other way around that he was not in any way required to justify himself or his art.

We all agreed on one major theme: chaos. This was a dark dream about about chaos, evil, and in a huge way, guilt. These ideas are not hard to discern from the film. But how do you understand chaos? So we talked and talked and eventually came a conclusion that in this case, and perhaps all cases, chaos, is evil as we understand it to be. So under the pretense that on a philosophical level "good" and "evil" alone mean nothing and that evil means simply that something is beyond understanding, something that does align to our ever subjective morals.

If you've seen the film, what did you think?
What is chaos? And what does it mean?

I'd love to discuss it. And absolutely plan to see this in theaters if it comes to my city, and to purchase the film.

Under the cut are links to the films Cannes page, the wikipedia and other films I plan to see this year. What are some you're excited about?

general lipstick inquiry [18 oct 09 @ 8:54pm ]

hi loves!

so i would like your advice on lipstick.
i never have been a big fan or wearer of makeup but recently (i'm not too sure why) i find myself really wanting to wear red lipstick. i wanted to know if you had any input on what your favorite shades were; ones that are appropriate for everyday wear, day or night, one's that aren't too clowny or gothy or drastic, et cetera.
i recently bought nars velvet matte lip pencil in cruella and could basically gush about it forever.
