| tree braid care? |
[13 Jul 2009|08:29pm] |
I'm going on vacation in 2 weeks *Does happy dance* and I'm thinking of getting tree braids. How do you take care of them/wash them/keep the hair from going crazy? I'll probably use human hair depending on what the hair dresser advises.
Any tips?
Thanks!

I live in the deserts of Arizona and it gets hellishly hot here our high today is 113. Should i be using something in my hair to keep it from being sun dried? Is there even such a thing? I am trying learn about hair & Currently the only products i put in my hair is http://www.cosmeticsolutions.biz/servlet/the-5378/Africa%27s-Best-Herbal-Gro/Detail & this http://store.goldenmartbeautysupply.com/afbeoroloilm.html I honestly don't even really know what i should be putting in my hair on a daily basis or at all really. I wander the store "hairland" in confusion of what i should buy & the asian guy behind the counter is no help at all. My hair is bleached once a year so i can dye it reds or blues & yes i know bleaching is bad but paying $350 every 6 weeks for a color weave is just not happening. So any advice would be so gratefully appreciated.

Have any of you heard of ceXpress or used any of their products? I was contemplating on the soy straightening system but I'm nervous about using new products such as these ones. But I have "nappy" hair that has a nice curl pattern when wet then after that it's all bad. I don't want to end up with some dry lookin jheri curl especially since I wear my hair pressed anyways. Any & all info about this company is appreciated!

| Creating Volume |
[10 Jul 2009|09:57pm] |
Hi everyone! How's it going? Well, I guess I'll get straight to it. My relaxed shoulder-length hair is a little bit on the thin side and sometimes I have some trouble creating volume. But I've fallen totally in love with this haircut:

I just wonder is there a way that a stylist could create volume in my hair? Every time I get my hair done and I talk to the stylists and stress that I want all over volume instead of that hump with a wrap (you guys know what I'm talking about, right?) they get kind of confused. This hairstyle seems to be more suited for Caucasian or Asian hair. Should I maybe try a Caucasian stylist? What is a good way to describe what I want? I don't know if it's their personal skill level or not really having experience with these kinds of styles but black stylists never seem to quite get it even though I bring in pictures.
( Just in case you want to see my hair... )

| Question |
[05 Jul 2009|08:10pm] |
I've been considering cutting my hair super-short, but I'm scared of not loving it/the growing out process
So I was wondering, would I be able to braid up my hair and get a really short sewn-in weave?
How short can the weave get before the braids would be obvious?

| Sulfate-Free |
[04 Jul 2009|12:52pm] |
Hi, I've recently been made aware of the benefits of sulfate-free shampoos and I'm ready to jump on that bandwagon. I've been doing some internet research and have come across Jason , Burt's Bees and even Trader Joe's shampoos. Do any of you have any recommendations? Also, my research hasn't produced any results for sulfate-free conditioners or deep-conditioners. Most people seem to suggest using oils. Again, what do you recommend?
Here are a few details to give you an idea about my hair. I have short, relaxed hair. I keep it short (a little past my earlobes in length) to give my hair volume as it's pretty fine. I relax every 3-4 months. I wash once a week, although it really should be twice. (I'm not mixed, but my dad is and my hair takes after his in that regard.) It gets oily and limp by about the 3rd day after washing. I pre-poo the night before with Vatika coconut oil. I deep-condition once a week, and trim once a month for split-ends. I take the maintenance of my hair very seriously so any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

I hate when within a few weeks of getting my hair relaxed my roots come in. I don't like much volume in my hair when it comes from my roots.
Well I found this stuff here
 Redken Smooth Down Butter Treat
I must say this stuff is AMAZING. seriously guys I've...never had anything work t keep my roots and rest of my hair so smooth. And my hair is really light and bouncy..plus the stuff smells great. I ue it after I was and condition my hair, leave it in for about 5 min and rinse. My hair is very very soft and movable. And my roots? They don't give me no hassle. Literally smoothed down. I'm happy because I finally found something that works for me. I would say two thumbs way up. Give it a try. I bought mine at REGIS hair salon for about $14.50 so it's not really expensive and lasts quite awhile ^_^
EDIT: I promise to post pictures soon in another post :D

Sorry in advanced if this has been discussed. I've been a lurker around here posting every once in awhile.
Just a question has anyone tried using this Liquid Keratin? I haven't done much research yet I just saw a short little article for it in People Magazine, but from what I've read it seems like a better solution to relaxing. The thing that I'm not sure of is how it works on black hair. So, I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this. Is this a scam or for real?
Here are some links: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=211791&catid=75339 http://www.liquidkeratin.com/about-lk.php

| Sew-ins |
[28 Jun 2009|04:24pm] |
I'm thinking of getting my first sew-in weave some time in August/September. I'm looking for any advice on how to care for it, products, how long it will last, where to get hair (online in particular!), etc. I'm looking for something like this:
Thanks for the help and advice!

Hey ladies, so I have some background followed by questions for you guys:
i usually wear my hair in micros (currently) or flat ironed (when I am in-between micros, haha). I like hairstyles that are easy to keep up, last awhile, and don't involve too much stress on my natural hair--which is really thick and why I hate doing anything with it. I'm leaving for college in a couple of months, and my biggest fear (ok being a little dramatic here) is being away from my hair stylist until Thanksgiving break. I was just going to go with micros again, but I've also been contemplating getting a sew-in. I've known a lot of people with them, and they seem to be really cute and easy to maintain. My questions are:
1. How long do they last?
2. Does it cause any real damage to my natural hair?
3. And, because I am always up for suggestions: what are some of YOUR favorite easy-to-maintain hairstyles? Especially for a girl who's going to be in Collegetown, USA.
Tysm!!

| Interlocking/Crochet Braids |
[17 Jun 2009|02:40am] |
I get bored with my hair easily, so YouTube is pretty much a godsend for me. I found two videos ( this one by Toysvoice and another one by Blkbuttaflies) that detail the process of installing interlocking/crochet braids. These are pictures of my first try at them. There are a few things I'll change up when I do them again (like those cornrows, Oh, God) but I like this style. I get paranoid when I try to weave my own hair, but this is almost like weave without the needle and thread.
I used Mystikal Deep Pony braiding hair, a mixture of 1b and 33. I brought three packs, but I ended up only using two. That pink and green thing is a crochet latch hook.
So, lots of pictures to share, courtesy of my new camera:

haven't posted here in awhile..
Has anybody used VIRGIN Indian Hair for weaving? I'm not talking about Remy Hair im talking about Indian Hair..the kind that comes straight from India..cuticles attached and all. Many of the top stars rock this hair (Beyonce, Tyra and all the rest of the weave queens).
What is your take on the hair? Is it truly worth the money? Were you able to re use it?
I'm thinking about weaving it up before I go to Vegas so any feed back or pics would be greatly appreciated. The style im going for is under the cut! ( WEAVE a licious... )

I Miss You So - Orioles/ A Night Off - Drake ft. Lloyd |
] |
Hey, I'm new to the community, and I was so excited to find it because it's already turning out to be helpful and insightful : )
But anyway I'm mixed, and mixed hair, as I'm sure you guys know, varies. My friend has silky curls (which is also silky when she straightens it)..I, on the other hand, have this massive afro that gets nappy five seconds after I attempt to comb it out. When I was 9 years old, my hair was all natural and halfway down my back. After a few haircuts, relaxers and many years later, my hair is no longer that length. It's taken me 10 years, but my hair is nearly a quarter down my back. So I've decided to go natural this summer so that my hair has a chance to get even longer! So today I decided to put my hair in braids because honestly..my afro is too much to handle at this length. I looked up different types of African American braiding and finally decided on Kinky twists because they're the most simple and easy to imitate. I've been braiding for most of the day now (with some breaks), and I'm almost done. My fingers are killing me but I like how my hair looks so far.
It's very cool trying kinky twists for the first time...and since my hair is still growing out the relaxer I got about 10 months ago..some of it did better than others. Overall the look was pretty great. I just find that I like kinky twists better than regular braids.
Questions: Anyone have any hair style recommendations for extremely thick and nappy hair? Any pictures of your first time trying to do Kinky Twists? Anyone trying to go natural this summer?
And one other question: When I was doing my braids some of the ends stayed twisted after I twisted them all the way down, while others came loose. In the end I was forced to use bands at the ends, which doesn't look too bad. My question is: How do I keep the ends from coming loose without bands? Or should I just stick to the bands?
Note: I used Missniecy04's kinky twist tutorial to help me figure it out initially.
