*tears self away from Skyrates to write this* [26 Jul 2008|04:04pm]

So? So. Skyrates is awesome. I highly recommend playing it, and checking out the radio and forums. (Oh, hey, SC2 fans - it's combat system is similar to the SC2 combat system, and just as fun.)

Secondly. I'm going offline for a week or so soon, but I will let you know when I get back. Don't worry about it, I'll be fine.

Finally, the big happy news! I've survived another year, and I will be turning seventeen on July 31st!

I'll try to make a post closer to the date, but I wanted to say so in advance. :)

I hope you all are doing well!

Jill found some papers in the printer on Thursday and asked me if they were mine, they weren't mine or Osaze's, but they looked like homework...they might be Jenn's. Jill warned us about doing "homework" at work even when things are slow because apparently a girl who used to work in customer care got ratted on by someone in the office to Mark (the CEO) and was promptly fired. I suppose I've been pretty bold this summer during our slow periods checking my personal email, applying for jobs while at work, and websurfing (sometimes not for work-related things)...I should tone this down...heh. Although really, I need something to keep me busy...my only real vice is having my gmail open if the computer is on...hrm...blah I'm so bored. Osaze and I predict that things will really pick up in September when all our members return from holiday and still haven't received their cheques yet...oh that will be madness! Guess I'll just have one more month of boredom to force myself through...I should be thankful for the downtime, I'll be craving it when things start picking up again.

I just sent off my references and transcripts to Jeff, not sure when I'll hear back from him...I want this tutoring job badly, and at the same time, I'm scared that perhaps I'm putting too much on my plate...I just wish I knew my schedule for next year, I want to be busy, really busy...but I know I also need to be realistic, travelling to and from home to work/school/etc. is going to be brutal...I feel like I'm catching up on all my sleep now to make up for the sleep deprivation I'll have starting September...I know the only course that will take up a lot of my outside class time will be the second year EFP class, otherwise everything else should be simple textbook, multiple choice exams, and essays...the former will require filming and editing...

Looks like my sister is going to do something nice for me...she's going to buy me my new computer. She said this will cover her half of the phone bill, plus the $120 she still owes me for the stuff she bought using my credit card (because she doesn't have one)...this way I can still afford to pay for school if for whatever reason I am unable to get OSAP. Apparently I'll be getting OSAP this year, but I'm not certain until I can pick up and sign my papers and have money in my accounts...remembering back to last year's mishap, I'm not overly confident about administration as a whole.

My sister will be going to Timmins for a week and a half next month...she's going to be doing research for Tarmo, her thesis prof...the girl seems to be going far in the research field...in fact, I envy her. She says she's enjoying the life of research and is more certain that she wants to become a professor...lol...this is coming from a girl who apparently hates school :P

I've been doing some thinking...sure, I want to be a writer and I still do...I want to write amazing tv shows and possibly some documentaries, but I think I'm beginning to build an interest for the business side of television. This is strange coming from me, since I've always been so opposed to business in general...might even be a practical solution...maybe learning more about the business side of television will bring me closer to being a writer and producer :)

My sister says she'll talk to her friend Omar, apparently I may be able to get on her friend's Internet tv show on enviromental stuff and possibly work for his magazine...speaking of writing, when I spoke to Jeff on Wednesday over the phone, he said that if I was interested he's thinking of putting a newsletter together for his company and wants me to help him write it if it takes off...of course, none of this will happen until it's official...I'm only 50% sure I've got this tutoring gig down...in the meantime, I'll just twiddle my thumbs and wait it out.

I don't need to go in for work on Monday...I keep forgetting to call Doy, I'm a bad friend :( Hmm...I'm hoping that second year is going to mean closer ties with people from RTA...David and Teresa are the only people I've spent time with this summer...funny how Nate and I hung out all through second semester and yet we haven't seen each other once since the summer started...we still have yet to go for falafels. I actually can't wait till December...for the first time in a while, I'm excited about my birthday, I actually WANT to turn 24...

Ramon Stoppelenburg - Letmestayforaday (08-038)

(Blz. 79)

Hotel Rwanda [26 Jul 2008|07:26pm]

[ mood | crushed ]

I just sobbed my way through Hotel Rwanda. Jesus, that was the most intense movie I've ever seen.

I've read a lot about Rwanda and the issues of the poor, overpopulated countries of the third world lately and I'm more and more convinced every day that this is something I would like to do in the future. I want to educate myself more on these issues and hopefully one day I will be able to make some kind of difference.

There are many good things happening, but at the same time there's so much horror, so much pain and suffering in the world. I want to do something about it. I want to make use of the privileges I have been granted in life (access to education for instance) to help these people.

We all need to be aware of what's happening in the world and stop pretending that we don't see it.

OMG so hot! (The weather).

I so limp and weak and noodle-like! Best I don't try to do too much, for the sake of my health. I'd better just sit here on the sofa, sipping cold drinks and rewatching seasons 3 & 4 of Due South. IT'S FOR MY OWN GOOD!

[info]lazlet is once again to blame for this, btw (dS, not the weather). Verily, she is a menace to society.

Looks like the funeral is on Tuesday so I'll be taking the day off work and probably missing my church study because we're going out to dinner afterwards. I'm kind of disappointed about that, but whatever. On the bright side, work said I can take a floater day so aside from work not getting done when I'm not there, it'll all be good. Now I just have to figure out what one wears to a funeral (I've forgotten what I wore last time), 'cause unlike the guys I don't have a suit.

We're skitching off the wifi here and I'm on Randy's iPhone posting. As I squeed about before we saw Batman. AWESOME. It's finally nice weather - two days of sun in a row! It's hot today and we're going to jump in a lake tho I have already done so this morning. :)

Oh btw. Randy woke me by flipping me out of bed this morning. Soooo uncool.

Lolol.

Well, it's 28 degrees C here and hardly any wind. That's a bit much. Apparently it'll continue like this until about half-way through the week.

I've spent the day watching 'This Life', reading Lynn Flewelling's Shadows Return and crocheting (not all at the same time, obviously).

In a couple of days' time we'll probably go cloudberry-picking, and the blackcurrants are almost ripe too. Jolly.

Things were not going well even before I read this and became very sad. I don't think I was the only one harbouring the irrational hope that he would just keep living forever.

Although one of my coworkers is back so we can spend hours trying to decode blind items from Defamer and gossiping about pop culture celebrity crap- although we tend to more gossip about the gossip reporters than the actual gossip.

And the extent of my romantic life is discussing with rara8777 whether or not Jim and Pam did it on their first date (the one he asked her out on in 'The Job'). lol.

Funny, but Real, Wikipedia Entry [26 Jul 2008|11:05am]

Found this entry under Cleopatra VII:

In all, Cleopatra had four children, one by Caesar  and three by Mark Antony (Cleopatra Selene II, Alexander Helios, and Ptolemy Philadelphus). Her unions with her brothers produced no children. It is possible that they were never consummated; in any case, they were not close

Really, they were not close?  They may or may not had incestuous relations and they were 'not close'?  Oh how I love you Wikipedia!!

Here's a bit of contextless dialogue for you:

"Incorrigible!" John said. "Did he tell you why he has been sent down?"
"Yes, there was a performing bear," Carlyon answered absently.
"I suppose that is sufficient to explain all!"
"Well, it was sufficient to explain it all to me," Carlyon admitted. "Once the performing bear had entered Nicky's orbit the rest was inevitable."

A case of artistic license [26 Jul 2008|09:35am]

bucksatan73
I rent video games on-line through Gamefly (Kinda like a video game Netflix) and I have been playing the game Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution for the PlayStation 3. As you may or may not know, this game allows to play a historic power.

The artistic license comes in with the female leaders of this game. Here are a few examples:

Cleopatra from the game:
Go

Wood carving of Cleopatra:
Go

Catharine II The Great of Russia from game:
Cathrine II

Painting of Catharine II The Great:
Go

Wow, I can really see the resemblance!!!! Bless 20 to 30 something computer programmers and your huge repressed libidos!!!

Oh, but I do love my co-workers. "A Teaspoon and an Open Mind - The Science of Doctor Who" was one of my leaving gifts. And when I let slip that it was only my second-favourite Doctor Who quotation, and that I in fact preferred "Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea is getting cold" - they decided that they wanted it on a t-shirt.

Right now, I am very sad to be leaving this job.

But I have to put these feelings aside and make a start on packing up all of my possessions.

Urk...

I know, by now, how to do these impossibly-huge-seeming tasks; a little at a time, manageable chunks, regular breaks (real breaks, not just sitting down to write an LJ post). It worked for finals and it can work here.
