    new diesels?
I'm in Detroit this week working on the North American International Auto Show, and I just found this in a press release handed out this morning. I hope it's true, as I'd love to see more diesel automobiles available. My 2001 Jetta TDI, while still young at 100,000 miles, will not last forever.

Diesels will also have a strong showing in Detroit. Audi will introduce a diesel version of its R8 supercar, powered by a V-12 TDI turbo diesel. BMW will have an array of diesel vehicles, which it promises to have on sale in American by the end of the year.

    Advice

I've been using biodiesel in our 2001 VW Golf. The biodiesel was made by a friend. It didn't start the other day, so we had it towed to the mechanic.

It wasn't totally b100(cause we mixed).. The biodiesel left a residue in the fuel tank and burst the fuel line. It will be about a 1K repair...  so this experience with biodiesel has been that it freezes at the freezing point.

*this means more research into tank or fuel line heaters and other options

    Anyone have any advice?

Last, I am running for the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. Part of my platform, Clean Government, Clean Air, Clean Parks, is centered around moving the Milwaukee County fleet to biofuels, especially biodiesel, and preferably biofuels made in Wisconsin. We'll see how it goes. The primary is on February 19.

Homebrew Biodiesel classes August 25-26 (Sat/Sun) by Girl Mark
The Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op will be hosting the class "Learn To Make Quality Biodiesel Fuel." Taught by Maria "Mark" Alovert, the class offers a thorough introduction to grassroots energy independence. It is a beginner's class, and no previous biodiesel brewing experience is required. The classes will be held on Saturday and Sunday August 25-26. It costs $120, payable through Alovert's web site. Here's a link to the Milwaukee class listing. The class is open to the public; anyone can sign up. You do not need to be a member of the Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op in order to take it.

    Alovert describes the class:

"Biodiesel fuel can be made in your backyard or garage for .75 cents a gallon [not including road tax] with common ingredients, using very inexpensive equipment. Relatively little chemistry knowledge is needed to produce quality fuel that will run in any diesel engine, and thousands of people around the country have discovered homebrewing fuel to be an addictive hobby. Come learn what it takes to produce your own clean-burning biodiesel fuel, and to build the equipment to do so.

These classes are hands-on and fast-paced - you'll be making test batches of fuel, titrating and testing oil, and assessing quality of the finished product throughout the two day class. Weekend classes also include some hands-on equipment building- we'll build a few biodiesel processors for students who purchase processor plumbing kits in advance, and everyone will be wrenching on the plumbing and learning the skills needed to build your home biodiesel system.

Energy independence is close at hand! (Now you just have to get a diesel car...)

    Hot and muggy day
It was damn hot and very muggy in Chicago today and boy was I smelling diesel everywhere I went around town. Yuck! My car is bad enough as I spilled a gallon of ULSD in the trunk when a Jerry Can tipped over (yeah, I'm still mixing it in)

But just walking around town every idling truck was really spewing out some noxious odors that just hung around in the humidity. I actually LIKE the smell of diesel most of the time but I bet a lot of people were not liking it.

I guess it is a good reason to go to B100 for the next few weeks at least (My Camry doesn't have the most power in the world and it's even more gutless when running pure bio so I like to run B50 max).

Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op members on the radio
Kyle Capizzi and I were on today's "Lake Effect" show on Milwaukee Public Radio. It's a pretty good show. The one phrase you might not be able to understand me saying is "12 volt battery." The battery is connected to the 20 gallon per minute pump on one end, and powered by a solar panel. (Yeah!)

The Jenkins family visits the Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op
The Jenkins family of Nampa, Idaho is "crossing the country in a biodiesel-powered RV spreading the word about the benefits of renewable energy." On July 3, they stopped here in Milwaukee and visited the Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op. They wrote a very warm post about their expierence with us. We gave them 10 gallons of fuel and sent them on their way, glad to help make it a "fabulous day" for them.

Drop them a line to see if they're heading your way. They're a very nice family working for a very good cause.

    boston area b100?
    hi all,

i'm planning a trip from north carolina to the southern coast of maine (major life changes happening & i'm in need of a journey). i've been using biodiesel.org's handy retail biodiesel map to make arrangements to pick up b100 for my '02 jetta wagon along the way.

one area where i've had trouble finding b100 is in boston. so, can anyone recommend a coop or other boston source of b100 that i could contact? seems all the b100 i've found so far in massachusets is a good way to the west of boston, which isn't exactly on my route (though it may need to become on my route if i can't find an alternative).

    thanks!

Biodiesel events in Milwaukee and Chicagoland
An e-mail from a comrade in biodiesel...

    ------

This is just a quick note to let you know about biodiesel events going on around the Milwaukee/ Chicagoland area as you have expressed interest at one of the events I have spoken or had a booth.

There are two biodiesel co-op meetings going on this weekend. I will be speaking at the Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op meeting at Future Green (http://www.futuregreen.net/pages.php?pageid=18) at 5pm.

I have not been able to get any information regarding this group, but Chicago Biofuels (http://chicagobiofuels.org/?p=23) is meeting at noon.

There will be a large gathering of biodiesel users at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association fair in Custer Wisconsin Jun 15-17. see http://www.the-mrea.org/energy_fair.php for more information. This in one of the largest renewable energy events in the world and in [its] 18th year!

We continue to brew biodiesel at Prairie Crossing in Lake County as well so if you are still interested in an operating brewing co-op, wnat to learn more about using biodiesel, or wish to find a vehicle in which to burn biodiesel contact me for more information.

In science it often happens that scientists say, "You know that's a really good argument; my position
is mistaken," and then they actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again.
They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is
sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened
    in politics or religion.

    LPG conversion
I am in need of info. I have an 87 VW golf 16 valve 1.8L GTI that I want to convert to LPG. I can install it myself with no problem but I need to do it as cost effectivly as possible. If anyone knows of any resources for finding the under hood components at a reasonable price that would be tons of help.

    Greetings.
    Hi Everyone,

I just purchased a 1998 Beetle TDI, and I'm on my first tank of B2, and am considering fueling up with higher percentages of biodiesel.

I bought a spare fuel filter, in case I get a clog, but in that vein, how many people have seen their filters clog up after switching?
(my car has about 119000 miles)

Also, do people know of stations around the Albany, NY area?

    Thanks,

    --Singe
