Let's see how formal, dreary and painful to look at Lynn makes Day 4 of the Settleproposal.

Panel 1: Anthony finally asks if he and Liz should discuss marriage to which Liz responds it would be good idea. He responds to her echo by pointing out they've been friends for so long, they'd be good partners, a proposition to which Liz agrees. Punchline: The fact that they're practically already married has nothing to do with anything to them because they haven't said it out loud.

Panel 2: Anthony actually fucking proposes and the Breath accepts.

Panel 3: Ever a master of the blindlingly obvious, he realizes that they're engaged. Liz echoes her agreement.

Panel 4: They have a moment of silence to let things sink in.

Panel 5: RED ALERT! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! CONDITION [BOXCAR]!! I REPEAT! CONDITION: [BOXCAR]!!! THE SETTLEPOCALYPSE HAS BEEN UNLEASHED!!!

Tune in tomorrow as they break the news. You thought John and Elly were happy when they only thought that relationships they felt threatened by might be destroyed. Let's see their hateful glee when they realize their enemies have been damned to eternal frustration.

To be fair, I like the penultimate silent panel with the tears welling up in Liz's eyes. When my now-husband proposed to me, it seemed like time stopped for a moment, and that panel is kinda like that...

But holy mackerel. What kind of super-brief discussion of marriage is that? "We've been friends for so long, I think we'd be good partners?"

Heck, what kind of proposal is that? No "I love you?" Have we heard them say that once?

I want Cher to barge in (as in "Moonstruck") and demand that Anthony produce a ring on the spot.

Wow. She really did take the word "settle" to heart. While I agree that the conversations about life are far more important than the ceremony, I fully expected Anthony to do something a little, tiny bit, even the REMOTEST BIT romantic. God. What a complete fucking letdown, even for someone who just wanted something to make fun of.

It's exactly what I expected from these passive characters. Subject of marriage comes up, and suddenly they come to the conclusion that they "guess" they're engaged. I can't see how it could have been done any differently without going out of character.

"We've been friends for so long, I think we'd be good partners."

Nothing says romance like utilitarian logic! "Hey, we get along. We have our passivity in common. You like my daughter. Getting married would be a practical way to save on housing and food bills." I mean, Jesus, I'm descended from someone who married his housekeeper basically because he needed a mother for his kids and someone to do the cooking, and I'm betting even he came up with a better proposal than this.

At least the last panel makes one thing clear: Liz has been provably full of shit for the last year-plus. She's been out for Anthony ever since she found out he was engaged. Taking it slow? Her return being totally unrelated to Anthony's divorce? Seeing her yowl with joy on finally landing her fish shows all of that as the garbage it was.

Oh. Dear. GODS.

That was HORRIFIC. O_O It DEMANDS the screaming Snooch icon. And WT blue bleeding F is with that last panel?!? Is Liz having a Howard Dean moment there?

Scene: our young zombieslovers, seated chastely on the Salvation Army-issue couch at Chez Blandthony:

"Well, I guess we should talk about marriage."

"Yes, I guess we should."

"Yep."

"Yep."

*silence*

"So...um...you wanna share my life and stuff and look after my kid?"

"Yeah, sure, I guess so."

"So we're engaged, I guess."

"I guess so."

*silence*

*silence*

"YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

Seriously, the romance of it all just kills me. Or maybe it's just nausea from the overwhelming fail. Yeah, I think it's nausea.

What do you want to bet the Kool-Aid Nationeers are going to be squealing, "OMG!!11!1! My husband sort-of proposed to me JUST LIKE THAT! On the couch at his house! Without even mentioning the word 'marry'! You MUST have had a camera following me around! KUDOS!!1!1!"

Dear Lynn: You are made of FAIL cubed. Retire NAO, plz, kthnxs.

They'll be saying, "Lynn, you captured the boring inertia that is my lifeless marriage perfectly!"

Oh, wait... was that it? Was that the proposal? That's actually what these two are calling a proposal? My god, that was so boring and uneventful, and it really feels like there should be paperwork involved. This storyline is in dire need of Warren showing up at the wedding, pounding on the glass and yelling, "Elaaaaai..." uh... "Elizabetttttthhh!!" All I can think of here is the dumbfounded look Dustin Hoffman gave in "The Graduate" when he scoffed: "He actually said, 'We'd make a pretty good team'? Aw, he didn't say THAT, did he?"

In Foobland, even proposals are boring and "safe." Let's fix that.
