Entry tags:granthony the amazing, liz regressed, lizthony, paul is toast, the trial

I'm opening a second thread
to cope with the traffic. If there's anyone about who hasn't checked in yet, it's going to be difficult for them to wade through three pages, two of which are collapsed.

As I said moments ago, I'm actually hoping Paul dies now. He had outlived his usefulness as a character, and this way, his honor will stay intact. Just hope there won't be too many staring-into-space last panels. I hope Liz goes too far off the rails for that.

I'm hoping for Paul and Susan to wed and then Granthony gets hit by a car and dies and Liz is alone, left to see exactly where she went wrong.

I am now just dreading the inevitable "Paul Cheats" storyline. The set-up is already there.

I'm with you Cookie. I want Paul to either die, or to be the one to walk in on Liz and Anthony. I want Liz to be the one to be called on all she has done to wreck their relationship. Liz has already been cheating on Paul since that email from April. She and Anthony are the same.

I want Liz to look in the mirror and realize that she has done to Paul what Eric did to her.

But he's Mr. WRIGHT. RIGHT. I thought this guy was set up to make him the future of Liz! Is this now only set up so that Lynn can get out her "banging a cop" fantasy, and now she's going to "prove" to us that Granthony is better than a handsome mountie who MOVES all around Canada to follow her and has an awesome job and says all the admiring right things? Has Lynn not ever heard the first thing my mommy taught me about boys, "if he does it to her, he'll do it to you"? AKA, lie and force her to have babies?!?!?!?!?

I don't want Paul to die, and I don't want Liz to end up with Granthony. I want Paul to show up, Liz to realize that Granthony is seriously creepy and cheaty, and then Liz and Paul can get married. I also want a money tree and Jimmy Choos, but I'm still going to hope.

In addition to Mr. Wright, we had the "always return" of Liz's spirit name, the "we met for a reason", blah, blah. If this does play out as predicted, then this whole strip seems like it was strung together by a dozen different people without any plot or thought whatsoever.

Three Things I Hate About Liz (Please Add More?)
[info]just_jess_b
2006-11-28 03:59 pm UTC (link)
1. Liz is self-righteous.

Nothing can ever be wrong with Liz. Her emotions are more important than her commitments, and the whole of the Patterson family dances around her like a wishy-washy maypole.

2. She is spineless when it comes to her parents.

When she was in Mtigwaki, the character never made April-face. You know, the teenager whining face? Liz is immature around her parents. Liz is incapable of being an adult around her parents. Liz needs to be away from her parents.

3. She can do the same evils others have done to her and still be Saint-in-Training Liz.

Liz : Eric :: Paul : ??
Everyone has said it here. Everyone knows it.

Anthony's mustache quivers in fear. "But Mr. Mayes, I don't understand why I have to maintain this charade..."

"Silence!" barks the voice from behind the imposing back of the leather armchair. "How many times must I tell you- if you want to keep your job, if you want to put food in the mouth of your mewling French brat, then you'll marry Elizabeth Patterson."

His shoulders slump a few more inches, and he timorously manages to squeak, "But I don't understand why you're so desperate for her to marry me- why, she had that perfectly nice fellow up north, didn't sh-" His protest is interrupted by a loud, wheezy chortle.

"You think Constable Wright would be good enough for the Pattersons? Let me educate you a little, Caine. Mama Patterson makes sure her offspring cultivate so-called diverse friends- why do you think Lawrence gets trotted out so often, and not me? If I were Brazilian and gay, I'd be a much bigger presence in this town..." Gordon Mayes fingers his fleshy upper lip thoughtfully. "But pay that no mind. Elly Patterson was thrilled for Liz to spend a year or so up in the untamed North, meeting a passel of adorable First Nations children, no doubt. But a son-in-law who was less than lily white? I'm afraid that," his fingertips tap together, "was simply not in her plan."

Anthony manages to stammer an objection: "But Mr. Mayes! There's no way I would ever want to support"- his mustache quivers- "such open racism! Why, you know my beloved ex-wife... my beautiful Therese whom you made me divorce for the sake of seducing Elizabeth... you know she was Quebecoise!"

"Your youthful idealism is such a delightful contrast to your old-fashioned facial hair, Anthony." Another generous chuckle. "You may not be racist, and I may not be racist, but we all know who runs this town. If I didn't help Elly Patterson marry off her daughter to a suitably Caucasian suitor before she turned thirty, I'd be run out of town on a rail. I'd lose everything. And you wouldn't want that, would you, Anthony?"

Anthony gulps, his face pale under his freckles.

"Would you?"

"Of course not, Mr. Mayes."

For the past several months with the Liz/Anthony storyline, it's been like watching a plane take off with low fuel, faulty instruments, a drunken pilot, and three engines that are on their last legs. For as long as this whole idiotic and insulting trial storyline has been played out with Liz's return home (running away from Paul who got a transfer to be near her), we've been watching, silently (okay, vocally) dreading and waiting for the moment where everything goes to hell.

As far as I am concerned, this is the moment. This is where the plane starts to crash. It can only go downhill from here. Every morning when I wake up, I will dread reading this strip, because I know I will see a dreadful assassination of Paul's character, with a buildup of Anthony as perfect and Liz accepting her place at his side (and in his freakish daughter-cage).

We watched the Titanic cast off from England. The iceberg just hit. Now it's all just sinking.

Paul and his transfers
[info]aquamarine23
2006-11-28 05:12 pm UTC (link)
I was wondering if Paul had ever actually transferred to Spruce Narrows, and if he had put in for the transfer south. Here, for your enlightenment, is how I wasted my time this morning.

When we first see Paul, he is bringing Elly to the Police Station in Otter County:

http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/archives/001393.php

So, when he meets Liz at her stargazing party a couple of months later, he is working in Otter County.

Feb. 22, 2006 Paul has asked to be transferred to Spruce Narrows, "just an hour away". "If a position comes up there, I think I'll get it."

http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/archives/001660.php

This is the week of strips where we get some dopey Liz-Paul flirting, and Liz dancing in her socks, loving "being in love."

The next time the transfer is mentioned is in this strip, where Liz is talking to Vivian about possibly leaving Mtigwaki

http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/archives/001830.php

Vivian says "What about Paul? He's already applied for a transfer to Spruce Narrows." Which seems to indicate a transfer hadn't yet happened, since she didn't say "He's already transferred to Spruce Narrows."

2 days later, Paul says: "I put in for a transfer so I could be closer."

http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/archives/001832.php

Then, a couple of days later, he says he will "ask about a transfer down south," while thinking "I'll ask . . . I don't know how seriously."

http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/archives/001834.php

A month or so later, in the strips where we find out that Paul knows Susan Dokis, he mentions the transfer again, and he seems to be happy about it. Since Liz is moving, he must be referring to the transfer down South.

http://www.fborfw.com/strip_fix/archives/001875.php

So, it looks to me like the transfer to Spruce Narrows had not yet happened when Liz hit Paul with the news about moving down south. And that last strip indicates that he did put in for a transfer south, which would presumably have cancelled out the previous transfer request. So, I think Paul is still in Otter County, and is awaiting a transfer south. For his sake, I hope he doesn't get it.

If Lynn really wanted to hook Granthony and Liz up that bad, she definitely should have killed off Paul. Then us pro-Paul people could console ourselves by thinking "Liz really belonged with Paul. If only he hadn't died - damn those caribou!" And we could excuse her, in her grief, for marrying the first guy that came along. But making Paul out to be the bad guy after Liz left him is just infuriating.

And now the battle lines have been drawn. John & Elly have clearly spelled it out that only Granthony is acceptable to them, Paul has not met their approval. Therefore, Liz has two choices: 1. Do exactly as mommy and daddy want, but convince herself that it is the correct choice because Granthony is always there, and she really cares about him....or 2. Choose Paul, and realize that he will never, ever, be accepted by her family. Wow, what a great dysfunctional family.

Another thing that really gets to me is that Paul drove Liz all the way to Milborough (hoping obviously to meet her family--he was that serious; something that John never did and Elly only twice. Granthony never.). Paul is not some casual guy, but it appears that Elly and John refuse to even acknowledge him, plus dissing him. I can just see the fugly twins staring down their bulbous noses at him during the entire time he was there.
