Entry tags:granthony the amazing, liz regressed, lizthony, paul is toast, the trial

Tuesday, November 28
Panel 1: As whoever is driving points out, Liz is now at a turning point. She's been thrown together with Granthony, and now it's up to her to a) choose him b) definitely choose Paul or c) continue to be passive. Wonder which it will be? Judging by the fact that she wants to go back and hear the verdict, looks like a or c. (Being there with Pornstache when the verdict is read will not by any means force her into a decision!)

Panel 2: And John puts in some more propaganda for his future son-in-law! Look at the pride on his face! And why do people keep saying "Your friend, Anthony," with a comma an' everything, instead of just "Your friend Anthony" or even just "Anthony"? I'm surprised it's not in "quotes", actually.

Panel 3: I was going to say, "You forgot trustworthy, reverent and clean," from the Boy Scout motto. But let's break this down. Honest? GMAFB. Hard-working? Well, I wouldn't call him a slacker, but then I'm not sure "hard-working" is so exceptional. "Whaddya want, a cookie?" Smart? Well, he has a degree, but again, not being dumb is nothing to get so excited about. Funny? Since when. Kind? Uh...let's ask Therese, shall we?

Panel 4: Yeah, guys, shut it! Although we still don't know if Granthony knows about Paul. And I dread the last panel...

Panel 5: OH. OH MY FUCKING GOD. OH NO SHE DI'NT.

Just today, I smacked down someone on another board when they raised the same question. Basically, it was what we've all said about Paul's job, plus, "Liz is the one who decided to pull up stakes. Paul was a devoted boyfriend, but there's a limit to how long and how far he should pursue Liz if she's just going to keep backing away."

I can only hope that that gobsmacked look on Liz's face indicates that she realizes this. But it almost certainly does not. Instead, she's looking at Paul in a new light. He didn't drive 200 miles or whatever it is to sit in a courthouse for a fucking week. Heartless bastard.

Lynn. You. Suck. ETA: I'm glad I'm not the only one enraged by this! The only reason I'm not yelling anything is because my husband is on a business call right now, and I don't want him to have to explain that there's a crazy comics-snarking person living with him. But god-DAMN, this makes me livid!

That last panel invoked only one image for me...a nuclear mushroom cloud. Today, the final nail has been banged into Paul's coffin so hard that the pine box is about to splinter.

John and Elly are just pathetic. Never mind that Liz is an adult and in charge of her own love life - they have to put in a few good words for Pimp Daddy Anthony.

Oh my god. Where to start? How about with "Your friend" Anthony. Supposedly the family has known him for at least 10 years -- why do they have to keep referencing him as a friend?

And what universe are John and Elly living in where they see him as a good man -- honest, hard-working, smart, funny, and kind? I see him as creepy, dishonest, clueless, self-centered to the point of overt neediness, and completely oblivious socially. Not to mention fugly and gay-looking, lacking in any masculine qualities, and creepy. Did I say creepy?

We are in for a glurge-fest, everyone.

Hi! I've been reading this journal for a while now... but todays strip finally compelled me to comment. I was so mad when I read it, and then, like the above poster, surprised that a comic strip could get that kind of emotion out of me. That's just how much Lynn Johnston sucks.

Buuuuut, I'm holding out hope (in vain I'm sure) that Liz's expression is anger and disgust at her mom's suggestion... and then she explains how he was going to relocate for her but then she just decided to up the ante and move back to Southern Ontario and then she gets the epiphany that not only was he a really great guy, but that he knows how to dress his age.

I sort of hate myself for letting this comic make me as angry as it does. I don't even yell at the TV the way I just did at my computer.

In the real world, something like this would make Liz realize that moving South was a big mistake, and she'd leap out of the moving Crevasse, grab her parka and mukluks, and get on the next dogsled outta there.

You know, for all we know, Paul offered to come down to support Elizabeth, and she did the classic passive-aggressive "oh, you don't have to come down, I wouldn't want you to go to any trouble, etc, etc" thing with him. Since we're supposed to accept everything from the letters as happening offstage, I reserve the right to make assumptions about whatever else might have happened that we haven't been privvy to.

Paul has put a lot more into the relationship than Elizabeth has, and he can't be blamed if he's just tired out by all of this. At some point, even the most devoted boyfriend figures out his girlfriend is going to keep pushing him away, so it'd be completely understandable for him to start to give up.

[info]howtheduck

I enjoy the way Elly is played by Ruth Buzzi in panel 2.

John or Elly: So, life can return to normal now, Liz.
The way I want Liz to respond: If by normal, you mean living in your house, and waiting and worrying about whether or not the man you filed sexual assault charges about is going to be let loose to seek revenge against you, well then sure, it will be back to normal. Thanks mom and dad for pretending that this trial was nothing more than a little blip on your radar. I really appreciate your support.
Liz: For a while, I want to go back to the courthouse to hear the verdict.
The way I want John to respond: Well, as long as you make sure Anthony is with you then that’s fine by me. After all, the thing to remember is that there is nothing more romantic than a sexual assault trial. If you work it right you could get a proposal at verdict time, assuming the verdict is guilty of course. With not guilty, maybe just a promise ring.
John: I must say, your friend, Anthony, really stood his ground. They asked some tough questions, and he handled them well. He’s a good man. I’ve always liked him. He’s honest, hard-working, smart, funny and kind.
The way I want Elly to respond: Geez louise, John. The way you sound, you want to marry Anthony. Everyone knows Anthony was dishonest with his ex-wife. He has been working the same job he had out of high school, which kind of kills the idea he’s hard-working and smart. As for funny, when is the last time you heard Anthony Caine tell a funny joke? Hum! If you lay it on this thick, even Elizabeth will know what you are up to. The real reason we want Anthony with Elizabeth is he is the only man we know who will put up with all the junk Elizabeth dishes out to her boyfriends.
Elly: And he sure cares for you, Elizabeth.
The way I want Liz to respond: If by cares for me, you mean he constantly daydreams about us being together, he pictures us together in his head from when we dated in high school, and he responds to a subpoena for a trial, then yes, Anthony cares for me.
Liz:Mom? Dad? Stop it!!- I have a man in my life!
The way I want John or Elly to respond: Girlfriend. Please! If you cared for that noble native constable guy, you would still be living in Mtigwaki. Don’t try to sell us that line. Everyone knows you quit your job up there as soon as found out Anthony was divorced.
John or Elly: He might be in your life…but where is he when you need him?
The way I want Liz to respond: Tell me you didn’t go there, mom or dad. Are you really saying that the measure of a relationship is based entirely upon whether or not a man is there for you when you need him? No wonder my relationships are so screwed up with you two for parents. Do you have the slightest idea that with any normal woman, having her parents praise a man like you just did, would be the kiss of death for there ever being a relationship, but because I am so screwed up, I will probably end up marrying him. What do you think about a combination wedding / suicide?

I have to agree here. Also makes me question a lot about Anthony. Why did he even go to school? Just so he could work full-time at Gordo's?

And how many years has it been again since him and Liz broke up? Around 6? if it wasn't for the kid I'd think Liz was the only person he'd ever had any physical interaction with...and who knows, maybe little Francois is actually the spawn of Therese's fling and she just pawned it off on Granthony to be rid of it.

And the amount of crap he puts up for any girl...all for Liz of course, but if he was so hard up on Liz why did he put up with so much crap from Therese. Any normal person would have realized, "Hey I don't like you so I don't need to deal with your crap"

Maybe Granthony is all one figment of the Patterson family imagination because I can't believe for a second that this guy could exist.

You got a point there.

The girl has her own car! We saw her buy it! We know she can drive!

SO WHY OH WHY is she being driven home in her parents' car? Surely she could drive herself to and from the court-house? I refuse to believe she's so PTSD she can't even drive, or that she's so broke she can't afford the petrol. (Aha! I know - her Dad and/or Gordo sabotaged her car so she'd be forced to rely on Anthony or on parental transport.)

Symbolically, of course, this is yet more regression. If things keep going like this she won't even be able to sign the marriage register - because she'll have forgotten how to read and write. Anthony really will need that playpen because she'll be sitting in it waving a rattle and going 'goo'.

You can tell us all day long that Edmund is a neat guy and worthy to be king, but as long as he keeps blinding old men and taunting them, I'm just not going to buy it, 'kay? Likewise, you can Imperio John and Elly into roboting out what a Great Guy Stache-Who-Walks is, but nothing he's done, NOTHING, comes close to their description of the blubbering Squishy.

Alas, the only way Elly's UberMira evilness works now is if Liz finally understands that the woman is insane, and gets the hell out of there... But that would require current FBOFW characters to act based on *behavior* and not on *verbal cues*.

HOLY SHITFUCKING CHRIST I WANT TO STAB THESE PEOPLE WITH TENT STAKES.

What kind of irrational response is that? LIZ LEFT HIM. At the last possible second! After he'd already arranged to be closer to her, she went "nuh uh, I'm moving back to my mommy and daddy!" which left him IN THE LURCH. He already tried to rearrange his life for her ONCE. Well, I guess phone calls that last SEVERAL HOURS AT A TIME just don't measure up to emotional assault and poor-me single-dad whinefests.

"...poor-me single-dad whinefests..."

I'm half-awake, and for a split second, read 'whitefests.'

And thought about it, and realised why.

I don't know how LJ can spin this one around to put Elly into the all knowing, wise, and never-do-wrong person she's supposed to be. Her comment in today's strip is flat out wrong. Yeah, Mr. Wright is obviously not trying to be with her considering he posted and got a transfer to Mitgi-bfe asap, then before he knows it has to apply for yet another transfer. To be closer to her and her family of course...screw him if his family is nowhere in sight, since obviously the name of the game is "follow Liz to the ends of the earth".

Unfortunately Granthony has a good +5 year headstart on him and not showing any signs of tiring.
