My babies!

I found a pair of Hercules AMF bikes on craigslist and I adore them. I call them my twins:

That's Houdini/Horatio/Hercules. His name tends to change, cause I just can't seem to find the PERFECT name for him. His 2nd and 3rd gears are shot, but he's a good ride.

That's Katherine Hepburn. She only needs the one name. I find her to be a more comfortable ride, and she's my favorite. I love them both, but I just love riding her. Unfortunately, one of her pedals broke on me, and I've been having a trouble fixing it up.

I got a new crank arm and a new pedal. I have everything I need to fix her right up but something has been baffling me:

How do I get that thing off? Is it a cap or a part of the screw? Everything I try to take it off, it budge and I don't know what to do. Please help?

It's called a cotter pin. Take the nut off and tap it out with a hammer.

It won't bend and if it does a lot of shops still have cotter pins in stock. They're made in three diameters: 8.5, 9.0 and 9.5 mm. The bigger issue will be hitting it too hard and screwing up the threads. Most cotter pins will just pop right out though.

I had those on my old Humber. The cotter pin is the devil.

It's made out of really soft metal, so if you tap too gently, it'll squish. I got one out by whacking it once, as hard as I could.
