    Bi parenting
Pleased to report that the first bi/alt parenting meetup yesterday went well - we had 9 adults and 6 kids in all, I think, it didn't rain, and Coram's Fields was as good as I remembered. It would be a good place to meet again, especially over the summer.

If you were there, thank you! If not, why not come to the Bi Family Picnic after Pride on July 4th - about 3pm in St James' Park off the Mall, look for the purple. All welcome, as long as you're child-tolerant.

    Diversity
As some of you will remember, we had diversity feedback forms at London BiFest this year as well as holding a diversity panel. There will at some point be written-up minutes for the panel, but in the meantime, here are the results of the questionnaire: Read more... )

    Family meet
    Hi all

The first bi/alt family meetup will be on Saturday June 20th at 2pm 1.30pm at Coram's Fields, Guildford Street, London WC1N 1DN. It's a shortish walk from King's Cross, or the nearest tube station is Russell Square.

Coram's Fields is a free playground and park with activities for all ages, plus a vegetarian cafe. It's open till 7pm so we should have plenty of time there (not that we'll necessarily stay there till closing).

The one constraint on Coram's Fields is that you have to have a child with you to get in. So if you're lacking a child but want to join us, give me an email and arrange to meet us outside. (You can also email if you want my mobile number so you can find us inside.)

Hope to see a few people there! If you can't make this one, the next one will be a post-Pride picnic on St James' Park on July 4th - all welcome.

    Measuring success
So, if you were asked to measure the success of the following events, what would you put forwards as evidence that's measurable?

    Bi parenting - cross-posted
I'd like to arrange a 'bi parents meet-up' - which would extend to basically anyone bi-friendly who likes kids and wants to come along, but is specifically targeted at bi/alternative parents and their children.

The first one will be on Saturday July 4th after the Pride march. Some of us are going on the march (probably with our children) but the Trafalgar Square festival afterwards isn't especially child-friendly, so after the march I suggest that we head to St James Park, which is nearby, and hang out there. I'll post specific time-and-place details later, but this is a heads-up about the plan.

I'm also planning a meet-up on Sunday July 19th, details to be arranged.

(This is crossposted to [info]drunkmidgets, which is an alt parenting community I created. It hasn't been used much recently but can always be resurrected, so do join if you want to.)

Thank you very much to everyone who came to BiFest yesterday! I thought it went well. If you were there, feel free to announce yourself in the comments to this entry, if you'd like, or maybe post to the community yourself.

One thing that came out of the event from talking to people was the definite need for a bi families meet-up, so I'm planning to arrange that sometime soon - maybe June or July? All will be welcome - I'll post here about it when I have more details.

    Thank you!
Thank you to everyone who came to yesterday's London BiFest and helped make it (as far as I can judge from asking people as they were leaving) such a success. We didn't do a headcount, but I think numbers were about 20 down on last year, and the closure by TfL of every station withing a half-mile radius of Doggett's could certainly account for that. I certainly had a great time - attended two very useful sessions, chatted to a lot of new people and boogied to Scissor Sisters - and very much look forward to coming to next year's as a regular punter rather than someone on the team.

I'd particularly like to thank everyone in the diversity workshop for staying calm, constructive and polite when making points and answering them. I'm also grateful to the people who came up to me after the session and discussed ways to make BiFest (and bi events in general) more welcoming to first-timers; that was very useful. This session is one reason why we can't quite wash our hands of BiFest just yet; the minutes (heroically taken by [info]asrana) need to be written up, and the results of the diversity feedback forms collated, and we need to publish them. This is a continuation of the conversation - we didn't start it and I certainly hope the session at BiFest won't be anything like the last word - so the more public we can make it the better.

Special thanks to [info]booklectic for running it with me this year, and being a fantastic team member on all of them since the first one we ran in 2005. It would not have happened without her.

    Travel to BiFest on Saturday
In addition to the Jubilee, Circle and the relevant part of the District line (Earls Court to Whitechapel) being closed, the TFL website tells me:

From 1200 to 1600 on Saturday 16 May all routes in central London will have severe delays, diversions and curtailments while a Palestian Solidarity Campaign march and rally takes place.

It doesn't say how much extra time to allow, but thought I'd stick it out here to make people aware anyway.

    Gender!
Hi! You may have noticed from the programme that there will be a session on gender (in the downstairs bar from 3 to 4.30pm).

I'll be running it, and you’re very welcome to come to it.

It'll be an informal session with games and creative opportunities, so that you can find out more about your own gender, or everyone else's. You don't need to know anything about gender as a subject to come - it'll be based in exploring people's experiences.

Do we fancy different people differently because of their gender, or because of ours? How does being in a relationship with someone of a particular gender make you feel? What do you wear to look sexy if you're not sure who'll be looking? These, and other perplexing questions, may be entirely solved by 4.30! Or you can always keep talking about them in the bar.

It would be really useful if the diversity discussion at BiFest could be minuted, so that salient details can be passed on to future bi event organisers. Minutes could just include taking notes of major points, not full minuting.

Would anyone be able to volunteer to do this? You'll get free entry to BiFest, my eternal gratitude, and drinks will be bought. :)

    Activism Workshop at BiFest London
BiFest is coming! You knew that already, right?

I'm running the Activism workshop this year, and wanted to say a bit about that. We're going to be looking at how activism is easy and how it can be very part time - with things you can do once a month, or can do in 5 minutes. Because I love flip-charts I'll be making some lists of slogans, places to promote bisexuality & bi events, and what things YOU can do to become a bisexual activist!

If you've never thought of yourself as a bi activist, or think it might not be for you, then come along and find out how you might already be one!

Seperately I am also looking for good pictures that can be used online of people wearing bisexual t-shirts, bi badges, or holding bi banners. If you have any suitable pictures or items then please bring them with you - if it's shirts then we can either take a snap of you wearing it or, if you don't want that, someone else wearing it!

    Reception desk team members wanted!
Hi! I'm Karen, and I'm looking after the reception desk at BiFest London on 16th May. We've already had lots of lovely volunteers but the more the merrier - and this time I'm asking specifically for people who would be interested in a stint on the reception desk.

    What does it involve?

Reception desk duties are mostly greeting people as they arrive, taking their money and stamping their hands, handing out information and answering basic questions such as where the meeting rooms or loos are. Pretty straightforward really. There'll always be at least two people on the desk in case it gets busy.

How much time do you need people for?
Normally nobody would be asked to do more than a hour at a time - and the more volunteers, the shorter the slots need to be. If there's particular workshops or social events you want to participate in, no problem, we can work around that.

    What's in it for me?
Ooh, you mercenary thing! Well, apart from the obvious glow of satisfaction at being part of one of London's premier bi events, working on the reception desk is a great way to meet new people. And there will be lots of lovely sweeties to keep the desk volunteers happily buzzed all day.

Sounds great! How do I get involved?
If you've already emailed me or Katy ([info]booklectic ) then you don't need to do anything - we already have your details and you'll be getting an email shortly. If not, drop me a line at valkyriekaren@gmail.com and I'll add you to the list. Or, just turn up on the day and see if there's a slot you can do on the signup sheet.
