Thanks to [info]lolliepopp for uploading the new [info]bicon icon - and for her idea to post these:

We don't have many icons/banners - but the three banners I show here were made by (I believe) Ed - [info]rebroad.

    Car Share From Newcastle Wanted
    Hello, everyone!

I had a quick trawl through the comm looking for any unified carpooling thread for this year's BiCon and didn't spot one, so...

I don't suppose anyone is planning on driving down to Worcester from the Newcastle area - or points further north - and has a spare seat for an odd bloke with purple hair? (I know... I'm selling this really well, aren't I?)

Naturally I'd be happy to contribute towards petrol, provide navigational assistance ('I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque...'), and otherwise help to make the hours simply fly by.

Feel free to reply in this thread or send me a PM through LJ if it's super-secret. ;-)

BiCon 2009 Update on Community Day
    Good afternoon

BiCon 2009 is just one month away and things have been progressing. More information can be found on all the topics below by going to the BiCon 2009 website. http://www.bicon2009.org.uk This LJ post is to let you know some of the updates.

Thursday 20th August is Community Day at BiCon 2009. We now have a number of organisations confirmed who will be available for information, advice, to chat and who will be participating in the six themed discussion groups.

Some of the confirmed organisations include (in alphabetical order):Read more... )
If there's an organisation you would like to see there, then please invite them along. If you think they would like a stall, please pass on my contact details - sanji@bicon2009.org.uk - and ask them to get in touch with me.

Please note that we have contacted a large number of organisations, however, we cannot guarantee that a particular organisation will attend (no matter how wonderful BiCon is!).

The six discussion groups organised for Community Day are:Read more... )

If there's a theme you would like to have a discussion around that isn't covered on Community Day, then why not offer to facilitate a workshop? Email: sessions@bicon2009.org.uk

Request for help from you, the bisexual (and allies) community.
BiCon is a community event and run by volunteers (such as myself and the rest of the team). It's also run by volunteers like you. If you've wanted to help out but haven't yet, now's your chance!

Community Day needs help with workshop faciliation and someone on the Community Day reception desk from 11am till 1pm. If you want to help out for one hour (a workshop) or two hours (Community Day reception) then please email sanji@bicon2009.org.uk

The workshops can't happen without facilitators so please, please do get in touch.

Community Day is going to be an excellent opportunity for you to get information from national and regional organisations on issues that are important to you. It's going to give you the opportunity to have your say and discuss issues that are of interest to you. However, this won't happen without your participation.

If you want to have a voice, if you want to talk to organisations about what you want, then come along. Most of the listed organisations will only be there on Thursday 20th August. It's a real chance to talk to people and get involved.

All this information, and the timetable, can be found at http://www.bicon2009.org.uk

    Booking confirmation?
Are we getting booking confirmations and what form will they take?

Only I am getting a little paranoid as I have not had anything in the post, by email or even seen the money leave my account yet. Is this all according to plan? I would hate to turn up on the day and find that have no where to stay as I'd messed up my booking and that you lovely people had not recieved my details/payment.

Unfortunately, being at work I don't have my booking ref to hand, but if its possible to confirm if there is a booking for Rebecca Thomas I would be most grateful.

    Lion reunion
I thought it might be nice to have a lion reunion at this year's BiCon - people bringing along their lions from last year's Ball and talking about what they've been up to.

    Thoughts:
     - people could decorate their lion, so as to avoid accidental mixups with other people's lions
     - we could bring things to decorate/dress up the lions with
     - people could take photos of their lions having adventures (or whatever) and bring the photos along. (Or email them to booklectic at livejournal and I'll print them out for you and bring them.)

We could say the reunion will be Friday lunchtime, say? In the bar? People without lions would also be welcome, of course!

    Costume transportation from Nottingham?
    Hi,

I'm beginning work on my Crime And Punishment Ball costume and it's becoming evident that it's going to be extremely difficult to transport by train. I going to need to either radically simplify the design or find some other way to transport it...

I don't suppose anyone passing through Nottingham on their way to BiCon will have car space to transport a moderately bulky costume with limited collapsability? I'm sure I can contribute a reasonable sum towards your petrol costs.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

    Torchwood: Children of Earth homophobic?
Bisexual favourite sci-fi TV show Torchwood has recently been accused of homophobia for the resolution to its recent hugely successful and critically acclaimed miniseries Children of Earth.

As a reaction to this, I've written an article about how Children of Earth can certainly look homophobic or at least heterosexist when viewed in the cultural and historical context of repeated negative tropes used when representing LGBT people on TV.

I've also been a guest panellist on the longrunning Radio Free Skaro Doctor Who podcast in which three LGBT science fiction fans discuss the fan accusations of homophobia in Torchwood - This episode is now available on the feed, via iTunes or directly from the Radio Free Skaro blog. I had a great time recording this podcast and think we had an excellent and interesting discussion about the portrayal of LGBT characters in mainstream TV drama. Let me know what you think if you listen!

So, would anyone be interested in a similar discussion of TV tropes for bisexuality and same sex relationships in TV drama at BiCon? I'll likely use Torchwood as a starting point but also ask for other examples and counter examples for the tropes, I'll also limit the discussion to series broadcast on UK terrestrial TV only, to avoid spoilers.

    Lift to Bicon?
Before I attempt to book train tickets, is there anybody travelling to Bicon by car who'd be able to give me a lift there and/or back?

I live in Norwich, but can travel elsewhere (eg Cambridge, Ely, Peterborough) to be picked up. I'm also happy to make a donation towards petrol costs etc.

If anybody can help, that'd be great; if not, then no worries :-)

    bleepy music
Could I be so bold as to suggest half an hour (or more!) of bleepy music on just one of the nights? :) I'm sure I'm not the only bleepy music fan at Bicon, and it would be lovely to have some electro/goth/techno stuff to dance to late one night.

    Ball!
    Hello!

I'm going to be helping out this year's BiCon team by organising the Ball (although it's mainly organised really, I'm just adding a few bits and pieces). I'm very excited about how it's all looking. As you know, the theme is Crime and Punishment, and that covers a very wide range of possibilities when it comes to costumes. (Not that costumes are in any way required!) The decor is probably going to be angled towards the detective/noir/Cluedo end of things, and I'm also hoping to have a live-action Cluedo type game going on (very easy, very opt-in and drop-in) and maybe a quiz and a few other games. It's all still under discussion.

Anyway, in case anyone would like suggestions, here are some sub-themes that would fit in with the main theme - all open to interpretation, subversion and queering up of course!

Prohibition (speakeasies, Bugsy Malone, Some Like It Hot, gangsters and molls, jazz babies, dancing girls, flappers...)
Detective (Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, film noir, femme fatales, Perry Mason, Poirot, murder mysteries. Famous Five, Secret Seven, Cluedo, Torchwood, Angel...)
Fictional law enforcers and villains (James Bond, A-Team, Miami Vice, Charlie's Angels, Austin Powers, Dr No, Goldfinger, Blofeld, Dr Evil...)
Superheroes and supervillains (Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Bananaman, X Men, Watchmen, Joker, Riddler, Poison Ivy, Judge Dredd, Austin Powers, Dr Evil, Dr Horrible...)
Wild West (Saloons, strong silent cowboys, dancing girls, rodeos, harlots with hearts of gold, horses, Blazing Saddles, Westerns...)
Pirates (Jack Sparrow, Pirates of Penzance, parrots, Long John Silver...)

Hope this helps to spark some trains of thought!

    News for Poly People
    Hi folks,

I'm aware that there is a segment of the bi community that crosses over with the polyamorists among us, so I'm cross-posting this to make sure everyone gets the news about Polyday 09:

Polyday - 26th September at Dragon Hall, Central London

It's time to open up your diaries and write POLYDAY in indelible ink on the 26th of September!

This year we've put in a bit of extra work and found a lovely new venue at Dragon Hall, near Holborn (Central London). Details are on the website at www.polyday.org.uk

The schedule for the daytime event is not yet settled, but will be posted here, and on the website nearer to the day. Workshops and discussions will run from 1.30pm until 6.30pm, and will be divided into three 'threads': Poly for beginners, Advanced Poly, and Open to All.

Evening ents this year will be treated as a separate event, as we're hoping to put on something a little special - a cabaret and social, with live performances from guest entertainers. The cabaret will run from 7pm until 10.30pm.

I look forward to seeing you all!  (I hope to be at BiCon, too)

    Maxine

    Fitting and Misfitting Workshops
It seems appropriate that I mention these now, it seems.

Ana Sharman (edit and Jenifer Moore, my apologies) started these workshops and recently I have been running them. They are not only for newcomers, but for anyone attending BiCon - they are usually a mixture of "old timers" and "first timers" and many people seem to come in their second year to discuss issues they may have faced in the first year.

    The workshop blurb is

"Ever been dissatisfied with the words "bi" and "bisexual" because they don't quite fit for you? Or ever looked round BiCon and felt unfashionable / "too normal" / not quite at home? Ever wondered where you fit in as the non-bi partner of a bi person, or as someone questioning their sexuality or "only a little bit bi"? Or, on the other hand, ever thought how much you like it here - even if you're not bi? These and other interesting questions will be explored in this session, which will run several times during the weekend. You're welcome whether bi or not, whether new to BiCon or not. It's especially recommended if you're in the process of settling in and "finding your BiCon feet".

The format will include discussion in small groups, and some writing. Shy people should find it not too scary. Doors will be closed after a few minutes' intro."

I love running these workshops, they are in turn funny, profound, moving and inspiring. It's amazing how many people believe "everyone else is... but I am " and by the time the 10th person has said the same thing it's incredibly helpful to everyone there.

I don't know the timetable yet, but these workshops are almost always the first and last to be run, as that is when they work best, so do please come along to them if you get the chance

    Fitting in
Like [info]lovingboth, I was just looking back at this community's early years. In 2002 [info]memevector ran a very popular workshop called Fitting and Misfitting in the Bi Community (which has been repeated several times since by other people). She talked about it here and linked to her online write-up, which includes a transcript of some people's thoughts about fitting in at BiCon. As we come up to BiCon 2009, I thought it would be worth looking at these again, because they're still extremely relevant to the ongoing issues of people feeling included/excluded at BiCon, and how to make new attendees feel welcome. Some examples: Read more... )

    Public Service Announcement
BiCon has been a life-changing experience for many of us. Going has certainly been one of the best things that has ever happened to me.

So if you are pondering whether or not to come to BiCon this year, or have even been put off by anything recently, please see here (just after 2002), here (just before and just after 2003), here (2004), here (2005), here (2006), here (2007), and of course here and here (2008).

    Get the picture? :)

Don't end up reading the equivalent posts in late August this year, going 'Oh, I wish I had gone...'

    Apology and explanation
The BiCon 2009 team would like to apologise for the insensitive nature of some of the content of the Ents post.

As a result of the feedback given, we have since deleted this post for the following reasons:
    - it was insensitively phrased and the team now realises this
    - it was not at all representative of how the BiCon 2009 team feel regarding diversity and inclusion within the Bi Community and beyond

Your comments have been taken on board - which is why the post was deleted. In addition, we are re-thinking the use of real prison names. As it was very late last night, we apologise for not having posted this explanation until now, the following morning. I, for one, needed sleep.

The theme of Crime and Punishment was a second theme after it was explained that Stars of the Silver Screen was a repeat. It is one we had been considering for a while as it would be a broad theme and allow for a variety of costumes - including superheroes, film villains and comic books heroes. It is not, and has never been intended, to cause offense. Each year BiCon teams choose a theme. Every theme comes with a risk of people abusing that topic.

Concern has been expressed over the potential for BDSM-ers to abuse that theme. Whilst we appreciate that there are people who might abuse any theme, we will not be focussing on one section of our community who may or may not act in a negative manner. This would be in effect stereotyping and punishing a section of the community for actions they haven't committed. The theme of Crime and Punishment will not be changed.

The Code of Conduct will apply to everyone at all times during BiCon - regardless of any theme. Suggestions given regarding emphasising this at the plenary have been gratefully noted.

The team IS committed to diversity and is attempting to reach out to other communities that are not represented at BiCon 2009. Community Day is a good example of work we are doing (and that I am personally organising) where we are working extremely hard to engage, for example, BME and older people.

BiCon teams are not perfect and we do make mistakes. We do appreciate calm and considerate feedback from you as you expect suitably calm and considerate responses from us.

I am working full-time in addition to being a part of the team, as are other volunteer members of the team. This means that we may not be able to make immediate replies to comments and questions. We hope that you can understand and be patient with this.

    Disappearing thread?
Came back to add a comment to a thread where a discussion was ongoing (about some of the decisions around theming of this year's bicon and use of language) to find it has disappeared. Can anyone tell me what has happened to it?

    Thanks
