Got it!
I now have what appears to be a useable build of Cairo! Several additions to tqh's wonderful work that I'll edit into the wiki in the future:
fontconfig generates two files during the "make" process, fcalias.h and fcaliastail.h that are corrupted and cause the build bustage I mentioned in the last post. However, if you simply delete the contents of these files, fontconfig builds fine.
the latest libpng (version 1.2.16) seems to build fine but causes Zeta keyboard and mouse input to lock up after booting. Zeta seems to be built using libpng version 1.0.5, which seems to not work with cairo. As a workaround, I built libpng 1.2.16, then replaced /boot/home/config/lib/libpng.so with a link to the one in /boot/Zeta/system/lib.
I'm now on to the next challenge - getting Firefox to build using our preliminary version of Cairo.
