It's monday morning and the show is friday night. The one year anniversary show of the Shadow Cats. One year since we first started shadow casting Repo! The Genetic Opera [and since that day we've done one show per month at the Bloor Cinema]. So it's monday morning and this is when we get the news; Darren Lynn Bousman is coming. Darren. Lynn. BOUSMAN! Director of Repo! Director of this film which we have all spent so many hours watching, studying, recreating and performing. He's coming to watch our show! Feelings of excitement, nervousness, and anticipation, which were already bubbling, are now at a full boil. And this is when we realize "oh my god, we have one week to pack the house!"

A few weeks ago the Repo Shadow Cats had a photo shoot for our new cast! We've had two shows since our cast switch, where everyone changed roles, and they have both gone really well. I've switched from Blind Mag to a Hench girl and Laura switched from Shilo to Luigi. This shoot was only for the main cast so there aren't any photos of me, but the photos came out so amazingly that I just had to share them with you! I absolutely love everyone's interpretation of their character, through both their wardrobe and their performance in the show. There is quite a bit of cross-casting, since our cast is mostly female, which makes the cast change that much more fun! I especially love the pantless Largo brothers. Tee hee, enjoy!

For our end of semester project we had to create a dress, design a collection around the dress and present our collection a panel of graduates. I was lucky enough to get some help from my friend Nichola, who modeled my dress for both a small photoshoot and my presentation! I also made her a matching headband.
Next semester we have to do the same project but are presenting it to a panel of industry professional instead of grads. We also have the option of doing something other than daywear (which was mandatory for this semester). Laura and I are both taking an evening/bridal wear elective, which I'm sure will influence our designs. We will also be making a jacket or coat instead of a dress and we must make a minimum of two and a maximum of three outfits to show in our presentation. We're very excited for this project!

Well now that it's been over a month since Halloween, I guess it's time to post about it. This year was a very special Halloween as it was the wedding of our good friends Kim and Alex! We've known this cute couple for a year now and it has always been painfully obvious they were meant to be together. The wedding ceremony took place at the Bloor Cinema, an appropriate venue for these film nerds and the reception was at the Gladstone Hotel.

Back in September Laura and I got the opportunity to do wardrobe on an independent horror film called Grace. Grace is a modernized retelling of the story of Albert Fish, a serial killer who was notorious for eating his victims, among other things. The trailer has finally been released, here it is!

Hope everyone had a wicked halloween! Pictures of our costume will be posted as soon as we find some that do it justice.

Yesterday was the official Zombie Walk and despite the looming rain clouds and chilling temperature myself and some undead pals attended. I was a zombie flower girl and was accompanied by a zombie ring-bearer. We lead the way for our zombie bride and groom and the rest of our gang of friends. Here are some polaroids taken by our zombie photographer Trevor...

After taking a couple months off to find a new location the Fetish Masquerade in Toronto is back up and running and this month was my first time back! I think everyone who attends is thankful that the venue has switched from The Basement to Vola Lounge, which is a much friendlier, cleaner club. This month's theme was Medical, which, as you can imagine, means there were oodles of sexy nurses! I had a whole bunch of lovely ladies attend with me this month and we met up with even more when we got there. Of course we had insane amounts of fun! Here are some photos of us before we left.

Next month's Fetish Masquerade is on the 21st of November and the theme is Studio 54 and the Sleazy 70's... should be pretty interesting.

Meet my newest love, a red satin top hat designed by Trashy Lingerie and bedecked with all the essentials- bows, crinoline, feathers and stripes. However, this is not simply a gorgeous hat, ladies and gentlemen, this is a lucky hat.
Last wednesday Malabar threw a cocktail party to promote their launch of select lines from the Trashy Lingerie designers, and a group of friends and I attended. Being a little over enthused we arrived super early, before even some of the staff had arrived, and waited patiently (not really) outside the door. Once we were inside we realized nothing was within a sane price range for us and spent most of the night gazing longingly at decadent corsets, tutu skirts, hats and fouffy feather hair things. Me and a friend of mine who is quite the mad hatter were particularly fixated on this little red top hat.

When the end of the night rolled around the hosts called everyone together to watch the draws for door prizes. I have never won any draws in my life and find myself to be wildly unlucky on the whole. Clutching my crumpled paper stub in my hand I resigned myself to face the cold hard fact that I would not leave with any swag. And then they called my number! Despite my terrible history of luck, in a room full of people, and out of 3 different prizes I won the very hat I had been coveting along with a lovely red feather boa. The chances of that happening are astronomical, I swear! I therefore declare this my lucky hat. I am very excited to do some photos in it that work around that idea.

Ok, so I just want to start off by saying that I am not a fan of Katy Perry. I find her music to be kind of offensive, shallow and annoyingly pop. I was also pissed to hear about her suing Australian fashion designer Katie Perry for having the same name. But there is one thing I must say about the girl, she has great style!
Combining the look of a vintage pin-up with an innocent little lolita and a sprinkle of showgirl her clothing is always fun, flirty and vibrant. As I said I don't really care enough to follow her through the media, but every time I do see a photo of her it catches my eye. I love people who aren't afraid of colour or wearing outstanding pieces. Her stage outfits are quite theatrical and often match the amount of rhinestones as something Dita Von Teese would wear. Besides her luminous attire I must say there is something undeniably sexy about the girl. I've always thought she looked a little like Zooey Deschanel with those big blue eyes. Anyways here are some photos of Katy Perry!

There are about 6 weeks to go until Halloween, and Laura and I are very pleased with the progress we have been making on our halloween costume. In case you've forgotten we're planning on being Siamese Twins!

I've collected a bunch of twinspiration photos, including this one of two lovely young girls at a pool

Because our original concept was inspired by the show Carnivale, which is both set in the 30s and at a Circus, we decided to use those things as inspiration for our design. So instead of being plain old conjoined twins we will be siamese circus style show girl twins from the 30s.

I've been doing lots of research on all the different aspect of our costume and together we designed a look that embodies the image we are aiming for. So far we have purchased the shoes and one of our glittery accessories. Because Laura is approximately 2" shorter than me we needed to find a clever way to disguise that and even out our height. I discovered a beautiful pair of sequined mary jane shoes at Aldo and was delighted to find that they also came in flats. Problem solved! The hair clip is also from Aldo.

Next step: fabric shopping!
The showgirl Siamese Twins from the film Big Fish were quite inspiring to us

On Saturday, as part of the Toronto International Film Festival, a zombie walk was held in downtown Toronto. George A. Romero's new zombie flick Survival of the Dead screened, but not before the undead walked Queen West to Dundas Square. Because us Betty Monroe girls never miss a chance to get costumed up, we slathered on the fake blood and headed downtown with our zombie friends. We had a blast terrorizing the neighbourhood and feasting on the flesh of the living. Since the walk was in honour of George Romero, and his newly appointed Canadian citizenship, we were not supposed to say "brains", as is traditional at zombie walks, and were told to move slowly like Romero zombies. Anyways here are some photos of us and our friends at the Romero Zombie Walk and you can look forward to more after the October 24th Zombie Walk.

Three weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend the first ever Torture Garden Toronto event. Torture Garden is an infamous British fetish club that also happens to put out an amazing line of latex clothing. TG is the height of fetish glamour and is known all around the world as the centre of the fetish community. My date for this event was my lovely friend Kirsten who was decked out in a gauze kimono and leather undergarments. I wore my little pink cape and Louise Black corset. It was an evening of latex, leather, bare bottoms and lots of fetishy fun! For those attending next year's TG Toronto event, I will see you there!

Hanna and I were on our way home from school this afternoon when we were confronted with a remarkable sight. The Chair. On the front lawn of the house directly across the street, sitting perfectly centered on a block of concrete, was the vintage leather and wood victorian dining chair pictured below. We were drawn across the road to examine it closer. It looked too valuable to have been intentionally put out on the street as a freebie so we were hesitant to take it. We knocked on the door of the house to ensure that we weren't stealing a recently purchased antique or ancient family emblem but an older man opened the door and told us it was all ours. Holy fuck. So... happy...

It is a little beat up but it is remarkable for a free find. There is a portion of the engraving at the top snapped off and a deep crack on one side of the base of the backboard but the wear on it is otherwise only endearing. I imagine this chair will end up used mostly for display purposes anyways. I have wanted a victorian style chair like this for ages and would love to alter it to make it a little more dramatic. These are possible sources of inspiration...

In conclusion: The Chair is all that was and all that will be.

For the past 4 years I've had the same colours in my hair; pink, blue and purple. I very much enjoyed having such vibrant, bright hair, but after 4 years the same old thing, no matter how different, can get boring. After contemplating a change for the past month I finally decided on a new look. Here are some photos of my new hair!

I can't believe it's already been an entire week since Fan Expo ended. The memories of that weekend are still fresh in my mind and every time I think of all the silliness I still giggle to myself. When the Repo cast and the Rocky cast were first double-billed at the Bloor Cinema back in February there was a big clash between us. Rocky thought Repo was stepping on it's toes, Repo thought Rocky was pretentious and stuck-up. After this year's Fan Expo I can say for certain that the rift has been mended, and the Repo and Rocky casts could not be more in cahoots with each other. But with all that aside, let me get back to the fun times that we call.... FAN EXPO!!!!

Day One: I was not working at the Repo/Rocky Shadow Casting table on the opening friday of the convention, as myself and Kim (Amber Sweet in the Shadow Cats) were hired by Cinema Vault and Harley Davidson to guard their motorcycle and coerce people in to filling out ballots. It was most unpleasant, but whenever the pain became unbearable we would sneak over to the Repo/Rocky booth to be cheered up by our friends. Our friends on the other hand were having the time of their lives handing out flyers, talking up our shows, fielding questions about the face-in-the-jar on our table and getting people to stick their hands in our goo (zydrate goo). They even managed to sell a few Gentern dresses which I and my gentern sweatshop team had been working for weeks to create. [Just as a side note, if you are interested in buying Shadow Cats merchandise please contact me or email reposhadowcats@gmail.com]

Leeland: the sexiest Columbia I've ever seen

Day Two: Saturday, which is traditionally the big day for the convention, I slipped into my Mag corset, feathers and train, plucked out my eyes and joined the party at the Shadow Casting booth. Amie, our brilliant salesgirl/gentern also joined the table on Saturday and did an outstanding job of getting people interested in what our group had to offer. There was a joyous and light atmosphere at our booth and a large crowd was often gathered around it at any given time. Possibly that had something to do with the half naked ladies and gentlemen who adorned our table.

One of the other really fun parts about Saturday for me was that I had a chance to hang out with members of the Ottawa and Boston Repo Shadow Casts. I've met a number of out-of-town-Repo-fans in my time and I never get tired of meeting more. It's strange how there is an instant bond created with these people. Conversation flows like it would with an old friend you've known for years. Repo people are friendly, silly and dirty (of course); basically they are my people, my family. I hope to be able to travel someday and see the other casts across North America.

I let a devoted fan of the Shadow Cats wear my Mag cloak so we could have a triple Mag photo op

Day Three: The final day of Fan Expo had a slightly sad feel, as we all knew this was it, our final day together. So, in Repo/Rocky fashion, we made the absolute most of it. Besides chilling with Repo cast members from out of town, we also got to meet Repo fans from various places. Frankly, we were blown away by the incredible Repo cosplay going on at the convention this year. We even went so far as to chase people in Repo costumes down and force them to visit our booth and take photos with us.

Fan Expo is the third convention that the Shadow Cats have attended, the first being Anime North and the second was Polaris. During our time at these events we have been able to talk to so many Repo fans and introduced many of them to our show. Conventions have been a great way to promote our show and our theatre but even more than that they have been a great way for the cast members to connect with real live fans. Some are devoted to the film, others just like our show, some have never heard of Repo or the Shadow Cats, but all are interesting and funny, amazing people who we are so glad to have met. One thing that our cast prides itself on is our accessibility. We want our audience to feel like they can connect with us and we want them to be a part of our show, because they are. We couldn't do what we do without all the people who support us. I hope that we see some of the people we spoke with at Fan Expo at our upcoming shows and future events. Look out for the Toronto Shadow Casts at DTAC and/or MTAC this and next year and don't forget to come out on September 24th for the next Shadow Cats performance at the Bloor Cinema!
