What is a beta?
Pure and simple-a beta is someone who proofreads a fic for you and suggests changes to the grammar and to the plot.
Why is it a good idea to have a beta?
It's really a good idea to have a beta if you're posting a story that's not in your first language. If you normally speak and write in French, but the story you're working on is being written in English, it's a good idea to have a native speaker read the fic over to catch minor errors. It's also a good idea if you're setting your fic in an area you're unfamiliar with. A person who lives in the area could catch mistakes for you (for example: an American writing a Harry Potter fic might want to have a British person read over the fic and change words and scenarios to make the fic more believable).
It’s also a good idea to have a beta just to read and see if what you wrote makes sense. Sure, everything makes sense in your head, but sometimes important bits are lost in transit between the head and the keyboard.
I’ve written tons of fics, do I still need a beta?
I would say yes as a beta still catches the little words that are meant to be there but sometimes aren’t there.
How to use this community:
Ask a question:
Ask any question. No question will be considered stupid. If you’re a newbie writer, everyone has been there and wondered the same thing, so go ahead and post. If you’re an old hand and you’ve got a question, go ahead and post it too. Just try and be careful not to post a question that’s been answered already.
Become a Beta:
One of the simplest ways to use the community is to become a beta. You can read this entry on how to become a beta and then apply.
Ask for a Beta:
If you need a beta, post a "help wanted" message. Please be patient on getting responses, as not everyone can respond right away to your message. Read this message on how to post a request.
How NOT to use this community:
1. Do not make fun of any newbie in this community in any size, shape, or form. You will be banned. We're here to help, not hinder.
2. Do not make fun of someone's fandom. This community is for all fandoms. Not just yours.
3. Please post using coherent typing skills. This means NO CAPS LOCK and No tYpiNG LiKe tHIS. Please don't use crazy font colors like fuchsia and neon green. It tends to upset people and if you upset people, you're less likely to get a response.
4. Do not stalk. If someone hasn’t sent your fic back right away, be patient. Don’t e-mail them fifty times asking why they haven’t sent you back your fic.
