This isn't the best looking salad I have ever done since I need to get some more produce (out of grape tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers...) but I still thought it was cute. I am so used to packing salads in bento because that's what the hubs likes in his bento - every so often I get tired of packing them and do something else instead :)
I recently started a bento blog, so in an effort to get people to check it out (even though I am terribly boring ;P), I ask that you click here to see the rest of the bento,(and the larger picture of the salad tier) along with my daughters' bentos and the bento box all packed up (I just got this one! :)
Thanks!!!

Salad is love, but it is tricky to translate into a mouthwatering, photo worthy, bento. This week make a creative salad and share it with us here.

This isn't my first bento, but it is my first entry. Honestly, the other bentos in here kind of intimidate me. :D
On the left, I have a lunar lander made of shrimp, pork, and colored pasta. My little astronaut is made of veggie "cheddar", with details drawn in with a food color pen. The flag is apple (the most challenging apple carving I've done to date, lemme tell ya), and the pole is another piece of pasta dyed with cherry juice. In the background is havarti cheese on a bed of rice noodles. I poked holes in it with a straw to simulate swiss cheese, because while the moon may be made of swiss cheese, I'm personally not a fan of it.
On the right is a tribute to this protest button. The helmet is carved from an apple, and the peace sign and yin yang are both plum. A bed of lettuce makes the petals of the flowers, and I used oregano from my garden to make the stems. Cranberries fill in the back and provide contrast for the oregano.
Critiques and tips welcome.

Both boxes have "Tie-dye" Tortellini pasta. The box on the left has a cheese Lava Lamp and multicolored cheese flowers. The box on the right has a cheese Happy face with an American Flag pick and multicolored cheese flowers. Not shown are the tops tiers, both of which had sliced fuji apples and seedless green grapes.

First, my apologies for being neglectful of posting a challenge the past couple of weeks, if you want my excuse, I was moving.
Here come the challenges again. Time for another decade bento . . . I Love the 60s. I'm really excited to see what people come up with for this one. The art, music, and style of this era is something I've always loved. Peace!

We had some great entries for this contest, thank you to all of the participants! The winner of our fourth contest is
sweet_mysterium with her detailed Dr. Who bento! She is the winner of the huge pink bento set from our generous anonymous donor.
And a big thank you to our amazing judges
nilmandra and
pikkopots ! You are both awesome!
And a big thank you to our amazing judges
Wow, we got 11 excellent entries this week! Contestants, make sure that you include in your post the name of the show that your bento represents, this will assist with judging. The contest will be judged by
pikkopots who is known for her own amazing TV show themed bento, as well as
nilmandra and myself. As soon as the judges have scored the entries I will announce the winner and get the prize out to the winner.
OOps! I hope I make the deadline for this challenge. I have been so busy all weekend I had to come home and make this in a hurry. It's a lot less detailed than I had planned but I hope I can enter anyway!

Here's my entry for the challenge of the week - The Enterprise encounters the Pea and Carrot Nebula.

Theme: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Contents: Nori Enterprise-D (TNG verson) on top of short grain brown rice. Turkey and swiss cheese Starfleet Insignia with Nori outline on top of a turkey and swiss rollup. Hidden under that is a number of chicken breast pieces. At the bottom - Carrots and Peas. My goal was to make this balanced to eat as well.

Since there seem to be a lot of Whovians around here I thought that since I needed a lunch today I'd have a go at something more unique while still in the same universe and try Torchwood. This bento has the added bonus that it's more nutritionally balanced than my last one too. As fun as the Ood were boiled egg and spaghetti is an odd combination!!
Contents: Boiled egg weevils with cucumber boiler suits, rice with furikake and a layer of tuna mayo underneath, a ham hand-in-a-jar with nori and blue rice and a green pepper Myfanwy both on japanese potato salad. Delicious!!

My other entry for the contest. (I was originally planning just the Dr Who but seeing as there were two other entries for the Dr. I'd do a back up.
In the not too distant future, some where in deep 13, there was a guy named Joel, not to different from you and me.....
Unfortunately I wasn't as pleased with this one. Though part of it is a bad angle. (Gypsy looked a lot better from a lower angle) But mostly just ended up messier looking to me.

Top is pretty obvious...
Gypsy is died tofu with inari lip and pickled garlic head light. Crow is sweet omlette with pine nut eyes, soba noodle arms and nori trim. And a Tom Servo for dessert of apple, marshmellow, chocolate sauce and candy drop head.
Mixed in the rice is dried gourd.

Ok! My entries! I'll give each one it's own post....
#1 It's the Doctor... AGAIN. But I decided to go old school ^_^ Tom Baker is the best, yes David Tennent is all dreamy as geek chic dreamy can be*drools a little* , but Doctor Who WAS Tom Baker at one point. I mean 7 years!

The Tardis wasn't supposed to be speckled but I'm a dunce and forgot to add the blue at the begining of making the rice. Still works though, dyed soba noodle trim and mozzarella windows and pine nut for the flashing light thingy.
Tom Baker Doctors hair is shitake, skin: balogna, coat: dried gourd, scarf: fruit roll up, shirt: regular mushroom.
The Dalek was inari zushi with inari strips, split pea bumps, pecan death ray, raisin plunger thingie, and some chicken bits from chinese left overs as fried body :P
(OK YES I CHEATED ON THE LETTERS! I got desperate, my attempts at hand writing were just not working and I needed to do something before I lost patience and just pitched the whole thing :P)

here is my entry for the tv challenge!

the tie is made of a lasagna noodle cut into the shape of a tie, with some decorator gel since i couldn't dye the noodles properly. the ID badge is provolone cheese with alphabet pasta letters, that same gel, strawberry and a piece of baby spinach behind it. chuck's shirt is the back of an egg, ham and cheese wrap in a whole wheat tortilla, under which, there are strawberries :)

This one I made for my mom to take to work. She works from home most of the time and only has to go in to the office once a month. So I made her a special bento to make the day a bit more bearable. We're both missing our Doctor Who!!

She has a ham sandwich with cheese Tardis and logo, checkered apple, carrots, cucumber, and more apple. She won't let me make sandwich shapes or use lettuce or anything "weird" lol so the cheese has to stand alone ;)
aaahhhh my first challenge entry as well as my first contest entry for this community! exciting
So here is my tv related bento. I didn't put in the writing because it would be way too small haha but it's the title screen of a show that hasn't been on in years but stars a certain really popular blood splatter analyst. It was the show I was watching while I read the post for the challenge so I thought I would stick with it.

SIX FEET UNDER
There is tuna under the rice, rice, cucumber under the broccoli, broccoli, a small bit of mozza and some nori accents.

So I asked Kidlet what his favorite tv show was and he said "Don't you know who I am?!?" . If you've seen any of my bento before you probably know where this is heading ;) Pokemon, how silly of me to think anything else could ever come close to you. *sigh* lol

Kidlet has a peanut butter Chikorita sandiwich with chocolate accents, checkered apple, carrots, cucumber, strawberries, and apple Pokeballs.
Now, I am particularly proud of my Pokeballs. They turned out much better than I thought they would and Kidlet was over the moon this morning when he saw his lunch.
This was never going to be easy but I've wanted to make this bento for a while so this challenge was the perfect motivation and I had so much fun making it!!!
I am so pleased with my Ood, they came out exactly as I wanted. They are made of boiled eggs stained with soy sauce, spaghetti tentacles and pickled onion translators. The Cyberman was always going to be the most difficult bit, especially the sticky out head bits but for a first attempt I'm really pleased with how the head came out even if it doesn't show up so well on camera. And the Dalek sandwich was just coz I had a cutter already and it fit!!!
I'm sure the more talented bentoists will have me beat in no time - especially since my hands are tied by the limited foods my picky hubby wants in his bento, but I just had to enter it when I discovered (Thanks Haver) that it fit the latest bento challenge! :D What luck!!
Some of you have already seen this post on the bento lunches community :)
I guess I'm feeling more inspired at the moment :) Too bad Rob doesn't need a bento tomorrow - I feel a Calvin and Hobbes coming on... (Been wanting to do it for a while since I keep seeing his Complete Calvin and Hobbes set - lol) - Plus we have the in-laws coming in this weekend (on Thursday), so I probably can't spend another 2 hours on a bento this week :o

May 18 -- Close-up!
Not quite what I had hoped, but I stilll think it came out ok - took WAY too long - I had a hard time finding a cutter to use for the eyes that wasn't too big or small (except for Homer) - Finally it came to me - a straw! :) So I redid the eyes - then I redid the pupils with the division sign from my punch set - the dot puncher I had was a little bigger than I wanted - would still have liked them a little smaller, but they're ok I guess...
This will mark
bentochallenge's 99th challenge and our 4th contest. We have a lovely pink and strawberry bento set donated by a generous anonymous sponsor.

Included:
* 2 tier strawberry bento
* strawberry bento band
* strawberry chopsticks
* strawberry bento bag
* pink banana case
* pink oshibori cloth and container
* 2 pink side containers
Contest #4 - TV Show
Theme:
These were our first three themes: songs, movies, and books. We'll keep with these ideas and make this one about TV shows. Choose a show you like (or even hate if you feel so inclined) then make as many aspects of your bento all about that show. You can tell us up front what the show is, but as with the past contests it is always more fun to get the community members guessing!
Rules:
The bento must be made by the poster and must be made between May 17 and May 24 of 2009. Entries must be posted by May 24 to be included for a chance to win the prize. You may enter as many bento as you like during the contest week. Please tag your entry with 'contest' and 'TV Show'.
We will have a panel of three (3) esteemed bento makers rate each entry on aspects such as theme and execution. The entry that receives the highest score will be declared the winner. I am still working on the judges and will announce them as they are confirmed. Please feel free to post any questions about the contest.
REMEMBER: This contest will only last ONE week. I would love to have it last longer, but I will be moving and don't want to misplace the prize in my move. Get your entries in early!
