Jul. 14th, 2009 @ 01:04 am Bellydance in mid-Missouri
Hi, I'm thinking of taking up bellydancing again. I know of two groups in the area: MoonBellydance and the Deva Dancers. Can anyone tell me anything more about those groups? Thanks.

Why didn't you TELL me:

1. how much my quads and hamstrings were gonna hurt

2. that I have a Ridiculous Grin on my face, despite the fact they hurt. :D :D

3. the sweating. Dear Sweet Zombie Jeebus, the sweating I would do!

Jul. 12th, 2009 @ 10:29 pm Cotume Detective Time
Alright readers, recently my friend and I were discussing costumes and I recall a site I *think* I got directed to from this community, but it was a long time ago, and of course I don't have the page bookmarked or anything. After many google searches, to no avail, I am wondering if the site has disappeared! I will try to give as much detail as I can about it.

I think the site was a small one, run by a single person, and it offered more "ren fest" style bd costumes, complete with matching skirts, tops (the tops were gathered on the top and bottom I think but were short and left the midriff bare), arm bands (but they were arm coverings that went a ways down the arm), and also an optional covering that was open in the front and back but covered the sides, they had a special name for this piece which I have completely forgotten. They came in the heavy fabric used for most big circle skirts.

I'm hoping this will ring some bells to those of you who perform at festivals and whatnot..... thanks in advance for any help!

Current Mood: excited

Okay, tongue-in-cheek, lol...
This weekend was my first time out with the student troupe, first public performance!! It was a veil routine, where the veils were really the stars of the show.  It was also essentially a "dress rehearsal" for MedFest, a local bellydance festival next weekend where we will be performing for our fellow dancers.
Woo hoo!

Jul. 12th, 2009 @ 03:15 pm Only grownup?
OK, so I switched back to the Beginner I class, as the Beginner II girls really were at the Intermediate level and I'm not quite there yet.

First class today. Myself and two young girls -- about ages 7 and 10. Unfortunately, Teacher had to spend the majority of her time with the girls because...yeah, short attention spans. I felt really awkward as the only adult student, since I knew the basic combos already.

So I went from feeling TOO challenged to not challenged enough.

Supposedly, there are some other regulars, but I don't know if they are kids or not. I realy don't want to be the only adult in a kids' class.

I think I'll give it another shot next week, and if I am still the only adult, I'll go back to the Beginner II.

Advice? Am I the only one who has felt this way?

Jul. 11th, 2009 @ 02:38 am Costumes for floorwork
Recently I realized, I really only have one costume option for performing floorwork right now. I have been really wanting to make a trumpet skirt, I think it would flatter my figure really wonderfully, but I want something I could use for floorwork because I enjoy doing it and would like to do more. I don't think I've ever seen a dancer do it, and I don't think I'd want to try. But I don't like how I look in harem pants, I get tangled up in circle skirts, and I'm not a fan of panel skirts in general. I think I'm going to make some Melodia-style bellbottoms.

So, what do you folks wear for floor work? Discuss, and please post pictures if you have them! Right now, I wear wrap pants, I posted a picture of me wearing them behind the cut.

Jul. 8th, 2009 @ 04:25 pm Next Session of Dark Tribal Choreography Starts This Saturday!
This Saturday starts off the next 5 week session of Dark Tribal Choreography at Solstice Studios!

Get your dark on....

I hope to see you in class! Here is a brief description of what its all about...

Explore the darker side of tribal with Jezebel:
This class will meander through basic tribal movement and vocabulary with a flare of the daring and dramatic. You will learn moves into movement into choreography both spontaneous and directed. We will engage in the performer aspect of our dance. What does this choreography mean to you? How does it make you feel? What would you like your audience to learn from it? Melding this knowledge with that of our personal dance to create hauntingly beautiful choreography. Jezebel's choreography will be included in Solstice Studio's summer show. Participation is optional.

I think this will be good in some ways at eliminating some of my frustrations with choreographed dance, but will present a whole new set of challenges.

Jul. 6th, 2009 @ 09:34 pm Help Zoe Jakes replace her stollen items!
Current Location: big red couch
Current Mood: impressed

You may have heard that Zoe's car was broken into on June 25 and everything in her trunk was stolen.  The thieves also took a custom electric banjo belonging to her husband David of Beats Antique.

To put this into perspective this would be the equivalent to a DJ or producer losing their laptop or record collection. As in, she can’t perform with out it.

A friend of mine, Medina Maitreya, started a collection and has raised enough so far that Zoe has been able to replace all of her makeup!

The collection is continuing to try and help her replace the stolen costumes and jewelry.  Medina and Rose Hardin (two amazing women with fabulous talent to boot) are each making her a costume to help replace two of the stolen costumes.

Someone on Tribe had a great idea – if 100 people sent just $5, that’s $500 raised that could be given to Zoe so she can buy what she likes.  Anything will help really.

Here’s a list of what was taken so you know what she’s been dealing with: )

Here's a poster with pics of some fo the items )

Donations are being collected at Medina’s PayPal account: medi13@hotmail.com

*please select "gift" when sending money as it doesn’t charge a fee that way.*

I know any help is appreciated by Zoe.  You will definitely earn major karmic brownie points and later, check out Medina and Rose’s beautiful creations and support them as well for being such wonderful and amazing friends to Zoe.  ^_~.

will be x-posted as much as possible

Anybody know of any tribal classes in the Long Beach, CA area? I've taken folkloric classes in the past, but want to try something a bit less choreographed. Weekends preferable (tho' not TOO early).

Jul. 2nd, 2009 @ 02:54 pm Newbie dancer :-)
Current Mood: happy

Hi all -- I'm new to your community.  It's lovely to meet all of you ;-D  I've taken lessons for a couple years now, and just finally got past the "beginner" stage.  I love it, but it was hard to stay consistent.  Now I've been consistent since the beginning of the year and am finally in a "intermediate" level. And I have my first public performance in 1 week!! Yay me!!! lol
I'm really excited about it (as you can tell) and I love that people ask me about it.  I'm a larger woman and people raise their eyebrows sometimes when I tell them I bellydance, but then they are fascinated by it (kind of a "if SHE can do it" sort of thing).
Anyway, I look forward to chatting with you, and getting to know you.
Thanks for being here! ;-D

Jul. 2nd, 2009 @ 03:54 pm A brief ponderance...
How weird that not even three years ago I was nervously attending my first belly dance class, fully expecting that I was going to be awkward and uncoordinated...and now I'm teaching a self-created choreography to other dancers...

When I started belly dancing, I took a stage name (Luna) very early on because Jessica was just too common in my classes and my troupe. Luna soon took on a life of her own, but she was very separate from my every day self. Now nobody in my troupe, classes, or dance community calls me Jessica at all. Some of them don't even know my real name. To them I am Luna and have never been anything else.

When I started dancing in public, Luna was like a mask I put on. There was a massive difference between Jessica, the quiet graphic designer drifting through the work week, and Luna, the flirty, energetic dancer, shimmying her heart out on nights and weekends.

But over time, Luna has bled into all parts of my life. She's no longer reserved for the weekends. The joy I feel in the dance, the energy and spunk I give to my audience, the confidence I feel in costume... they are all bleeding into every day.

Luna is not content to eek by in mediocrity at a desk job. Luna is not content to go with the flow and let others make all the decisions. Luna wants more and she's taking over.

And dammit, it feels good.

What is it about this beautiful art form that makes life and the world so much more warm, rich and colorful?
