| | nervous | ] | I will be bellydancing as part of Bedazzle For Just Because at Yeadon Town Hall (near Leeds) on the evening of 1 June. I'm in a group routine and have a tiny little solo.
Its for a good cause. Just Because are a charity set up by UK bellydancers as a breast cancer charity for sufferers and potential suffers in Egypt.
Come if you can...

| | Solace - Balance | ] | I've been asked to attend a few haflas, my mobile studio in tow, to do 15 minute shoots with attendees for a small fee. However, I'm not sure how much to charge. Currently I charge £45 an hour for a shoot - however I'm unsure whether people would pay £15 for a 15 minute shoot with me. So ... what I'm getting at ... is if I turned up at your Haffla what would you be willing to pay to have a 15 minute shoot? The outcome would be a disc of your hi-res and optimized for web photos as well as a £5 voucher off a full hours shoot with me.

| Tribal Bellydance in London? |
[Apr. 18th, 2008|09:02 am] |
Hello all, I'm new to bellydance and would really love to start taking some classes. I'm particularly interested in tribal bellydance - but, is this a type of bellydance you have to approach with previous bellydance experience or can a total newbie begin here? On that note, does anyone know of a good (non-intimidating) class for beginners in the London area? (I'm in N.London). Thank you for your help! x |

| | Apprehensive | ] | Calling all Sheffield peeps!
Just a quick reminder about the Boomshanka Tribal Hafla being held tomorrow night from 6:30pm at the church on Brocco Bank (just up the road from the roundabout outside Endcliffe Park), please forgive my awful venue description here, but I can't actually find any written information to tell me what this venue is really called!
The cost is £6 per person. Feel free to bring offerings for the buffet, middle-eastern in flavour if you can, although anything will be gladly accepted!
There will also be a few stalls (including the Debut offerings from Single Red Bead), a raffle, a live band and many performances by Boomshanka and others. |

| | envious | ] | Someone posted this on another forum in response to a rather dispirited post by a young bellydancer who worries that she is bigger than the other girls in her class. I think this is definitive proof that no matter what your size or your chosen style, you can be an amazing dancer, I just had to pass on the sentiment:

| | excited | ] | Thing the first:
Evening of Eastern Dance, including Bollywood, Bangra and Bellydance at City Limits dance studio, Sheffield, tomorrow night from 7:30pm.
Thing the second:
For anyone who may be heading to Whitby for the Goth Weekend, and who may find themselves there on a Wednesday evening, there's an open level dance class held in Trinity Church from 7pm - 9pm. Just in case you can't survive without a dance fix for that long ;) Not sure if I'll be going along myself yet, this rather depends on the opinions of the other bellydancers in my crowd, they may decide that the usual pub grub and beer is more the flavour of the weekend!
However, even if you aren't there for the whole week, or do select beer over dancing, then I will still recommend a trip to Gutsy Gingers Eastern Bazaar, just over the road and down the lane from The Elsinore. |

Belly Rock charity bellydance event at the Ramada Jarvis hotel in Leeds on Saturday 3rd November.
Boomshanka Tribal will be holding a hafla on Saturday 17th November. More details when I'm 100% sure where the venue for this will be!

| Spelling? |
[Aug. 15th, 2007|10:57 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | confused | ] | I've never been very good at spelling, so I've been trying to check the spelling on some words associated with bellydance, and there doesn't seem to be a standard spelling of many of them.
Is this because a large number of other people on the internet also cannot spell, or is it because there is not 'correct' spelling of these words?
Is it Hagella or Hagellah? Is it Beladi, Beledi or Baladi? Is it Saeedi or Saidi?
Any ideas? Where might I go to find out? |

Nearly every dancer that I know has had problems grasping this, and nearly every dancer I've spoken to has been taught it in a different way, from "walk like a duck" to "shimmy and walk" (all easier said than done, as I'm sure you'll agree!)
I was initially taught the 'John Wayne' style, step and let your knee bend so that your hip drops, then as you get used to this add a wobble between steps so that the overall effect is of a powerful and very grounded shimmy-walk.
Sometimes this worked, and sometimes I just couldn't make myself do it, and certainly I couldn't do it fast! We used to practise to 'Chicky' by Oojami, and that's just way too fast!
Then at JOY last year I did a workshop with Kay Taylor and she taught me using the break down of steps into 'down, tak-tak down, tak-tak', so your leading hip drops then hits out to the side as you lift the other foot then you hit up with the following hip which brings this into position to perform the following down step. Since then I've had no problems with this step apart from learning to make the move smaller so that I can make it faster.
So how were you taught it? Can you do it? Do you have any tips for those of us still perfecting it? Do you know anything else interesting about it? |

| | accomplished | ] | Blimey, I've been a bit lax! No report on my trip to Newcastle for the Farha Festival!
Ok, brief report on that now then... ( Newcastle )
OK, OK, I'm not very good at doing 'brief'!
More recently, yesterday I took part in 2 workshops run by Candi of BADA in Tankersley. The first was Exercise to Improve and was a series of exercises, broken down to concentrate on specific parts of the body. Each series of exercises is designed to improve the strength and flexibility of a part of the body, and therefore improve your dance in that area. The second was Shamadan, which is a dance performed with a candelabra balanced on your head. The very lovely kerida_eira drove us all out to Tankersley for the workshops (Thank you!), "us all" being soul_rider, ju_bear and myself.

Yesterday was the South Yorkshire Festival, held in the grounds of Wortley Hall on the outskirts of Sheffield. Barnsley Arabic Dance Association performed 3 pieces, and for the first time, I danced with them. The weather even kindly obliged us with the sun coming out for the first time in weeks!
( brief(ish) run-down... )
Now I'm enjoying a nice fresh salad picked from my own garden, and looking forward to an evening in with gothicgoverness and talma watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in preparation for Thursday, when I have tickets to see Order of the Phoenix :) |

Sashi
Tempest
Ariellah
Mistress Olivia
The dance that Sashi is performing here is the same choreography that she taught us in the Saturday workshop.
Tempest's dance is completely free-form, and doubly impressive due to jet-lag!
There were loads more performances than this, but these are all that's up on YouTube so far... |

| | hopeful | ] | Hi everyone, you've got yourselves a noobie here.
I started teaching myself belly dancing about a year ago, but it can get very boring on your own and I'm itching to find a class in my area, (I live in Bath).
Does anyone know of a reliable way to find one? I've tried various search engines and local business directories, but haven't had much luck so far. :(
Cheers ladies! |

| Hafla! |
[May. 1st, 2007|11:10 am] |
For anyone who doesn't already know, Boomshanka Tribal Bellydance troupe are organising a hafla on Saturday 12th May at the methodist church hall on the corner of Broomspring lane and Brunswick street, Sheffield. I believe the start time is 7:30pm, but I'll double check and let you all know!
There will be a nominal charge on the door (Not exaclty sure, but about £3), performances by Boomshanka, lots of music, and probably a mini-souk. Bring your own drinks, and if you're feeling creative then contributions to the buffet always go down well too! |

I was wondering which events everyone else is going to/have been to this year and why they've chosen those events in particular? |
