First Frank Wu Pic
Frank Wu e-mailed me the following yesterday. Looking at it, I'm thinking this might make a good button.

From Frank: "Feel free to copy, disseminate, put on buttons/websites,
whatever (and tell others to do so, too) ... Or, if you think it needs changes, lemme know."

He'll be working on a few other things as well. Hopefully including the multi-armed alien, since that one seems to be so popular.

	Hey Jim, this is my first time poking in here and I haven't read all the comments yet. I have a buton machine and am willing to offer up a moderate quantity for this project. But someone has probably already mentioned that CafePress does buttons now, too. So that's an option. (Reply to this)(Thread)

Anyway, I'm happy to see you here! And not just because I had been meaning to get in touch with you about the button thing :-)

I did go ahead and put together a CafePress store, just so I could poke around and see what our options were. Unfortunately, unless someone wants to shell out $60/year, you can only sell one of each type of product. Which means if we end up with 3 or 4 button designs, we'll either need 3 or 4 stores, or else we'll have to rotate through the designs one at a time.

I don't know what you'd be up for, but would it work if, instead of CafePress, we posted a few links along the lines of, "PayPal $1 or $2 or $whatever to our wonderful friend Tempest and she'll send a button your way"? That could potentially be a decent amount of work for you, I don't know ... possibly more than is fair to dump on you.

What are your thoughts? I do think the buttons may be the way to go. For me, it would have all the advantages of the sticker code people talked about, plus buttons have actual text, so even people who don't know can read the silly things, right?

oh ick, I didn't know that about CafePress. Well then.

I can set up, either on my website or on one specifically created for this purpose, an order form for people to get the buttons. I'll do it for $1 each, which is my friends & family price. Then just the cost of shipping (which could be low). I used to do it all the time when I lived in TX, so it wouldn't be too bad.

We could also give people the option to say "I'll be at such-and-such con and want such-and-such buttons" and I could make a big batch, send them all to someone who will be at said con (if I won't be there) and they can distribute them.

There's all kinds of possibilities. Just as long as everyone who wants one gets one :)

I'm still waiting to see what else Frank comes up with, but I'll get you the artwork as it comes in.

I've also got a copy of the Hugging/Grabbing art without the black border, which worked better when I was setting things up at CafePress. I'll e-mail that your way tonight. (What would be a good e-mail address to use? You can e-mail me at jim -at- goblinquest.com if you don't want to post it here.)

	Well, the only thing I'll say is that one of the problems I have myself at cons is people assuming that being there means you consent to hugs -- that is, that EVERYONE wants to be hugged by anyone. I end up saying "I'm sorry, I'm not a huggy person", or "No thank you" constantly. This button seems to reinforce that idea. I'm more about "ASK first, then hug!" (Reply to this)(Thread)

On the other hand, even "ask first, then hug" is a bit permissive for me - the implication being that, if you ask, of course I'm going to give permission. And while I'd like to show support, I don't want to set myself up for explaining that while I support consensual hugging in principle, I don't often go for it myself. Besides which, I'm in the demographic that needs to get its act together, not the demographic that's being mistreated.

What I would like to be able to do is be one more person at a con who's making a statement against inappropriate behavior. Any ideas for a logo that says "I support this initiative" without implying "hug me"?

	Agreed. In my mind, I saw this one as something for those people who are of the more open, super-huggy strain. But you're absolutely right that not everyone wants to be hugged by just anyone. Someone else mentioned the Geek Social Fallacies, and I am reminded of the one about friendship being transitive. So often I have the experience of people assuming hug status is transitive. Person A comes up to a group including myself and friends of Person A. Person A hugs our mutual friends. Then Person A assumes hug status transitivity and insists on hugging me, because I'm with Person A's friends. This happens over and over at cons, so often that I've gotten used to adapting my position and body language to read No as well as err, bracing for impact.

I think the thing I say most at cons during the day time is, "Gosh, I'm sorry, I'm not a huggy person."

I like that phrase ("I'm not a huggy person") so I'm wondering if that might be better than "Ask first, then hug", but maybe there should be an accompanying phraseology to soften it, like:

"I like you, but I'm...
just not a huggy person"
(with a picture of a cute but spikey alien.) (that might be a lot of words to put on a button along with a picture).

How about:

"I'm friendly,
just not huggy."

Thoughts?

Also, everyone, thanks for the kind words. I really hope these images help to teach some social skills to those needing them at cons.
