Using Icons

Can I take / borrow some icons?: Yes, of course. That's why I've created this community - to share the graphics I have made. (back to top)
Can I use your personal icons?: I make a lot of random icons that never get posted to this community, so if you see one of my personal icons that you'd like to use and it doesn't have some sort of "OMFG DON'T TAKE" message attached to it, go ahead and take it (with credit, obviously). (back to top)

Can I edit your icons by adding my own text or a border or something else?: It depends.

If they're being presented as bases, you are free to edit them however you wish - I will ALWAYS state they're free to be edited. As for the majority of my icons - you CANNOT edit them, because I've made them the way I like for them to be. I prefer that people don't add things like border on borderless icons or text to textless icons, etc. Please use those as is.

Again, if you ask I will likely let you edit them, can't guarantee it tho. (back to top)
Will you change the text on the icon to say "____________" for me?: While I understand that not everyone will like my word choices (er, including me), I will not change it for you. Once I post an icon, that is it's final form. In another hand, you might request a similar icon in the request post. (back to top)
What is hotlinking and why is it bad?: The experts explain it better than I:
Bandwidth theft or "hotlinking" is direct linking to a website's files (images, video, etc.). An example would be using an tag to display a JPEG image you found on someone else's web page so it will appear on your own site, journal, weblog, forum posting, etc.

A simple analogy for bandwidth theft: Imagine a random stranger plugging into your electrical outlets, using your electricity without your consent, and you paying for it.

Why should I credit you?: There are two reasons I ask for credit. The first and most important is so that if people see an icon I've made and like it, they can easily find their way back to my icon journal. It's about being user friendly. The second is to make your life easier: the more you credit, the less often you'll have people asking you where you got your icons. Crediting is not about claiming ownership or copyright, it is simply another form of linkware. (back to top)
How should I credit you?: Depends where you're using the icons.

LiveJournal / GreatestJournal / WhateverJournal:

Crediting in the key words or comments is expected, like so:

Forums, Message Boards, IM Programs, etc.

You are allowed to use icons without crediting, since there is often not an non-obtrustive place to credit in these cases. But if you wish to credit anyway, that's fine too. (back to top)
How may I use the resources (textures, bases, etc.) you provide?: Feel free to use my bases to make icons or my textures to make icons, headers, and/or wallpaper; this should be credited on your resource page (if you have one) or in your userinfo (if you don't). It is unnecessary for people who use the icons/headers/whatever you make from the resources to credit me as well in addition to the credit you've given me. Please do not use these resources to create your own resources for redistribution. (back to top)

If you can't find what you're looking for, there are three possibilities as to why: a) the resource has been taken down from it's original source, b) I never used the resource you're looking for, or c) you're not looking hard enough ;) (back to top)
How do you do ________ technique?: If you see something that intrigues you, feel free to politely suggest a tutorial for it. There is absolutely no guarantee that I will do it, of course.
Have you ever made ____________ themed icons?: All the icons I have ever made are tagged. If you don't see what you're looking for, it means I've never made icons of whatever it is. (back to top)
What other kinds of graphics do you make?: Besides icons, I post headers, profile layouts, friends only banners and mood themes - though not as frequently with the latter. (back to top)

What gives you the right to create icons out of art?

I create icons out of art to showcase the many talented individuals out there. While I do not stick to any particular art style, I will try to present the well-known artists down to those who are unheard about. It is in a way of promoting their works out in the Livejournal community.

I will respect the artist by not modifying their work besides the obvious. I will not do the following: animation, textures and the likes that will distort the icon from the original art.

I ALWAYS link up the artist personal website to the post. In case the artist does not have a website, I will add their name. I will NOT include the community their artwork was found, as they are not permanent.

In case an artist changes their mind about the usage of their artwork, I will grant their wish by pulling whatever artwork that has been presented through this community.(back to top)

If you are seriously asking that question, I got one thing to say: HA!

I will admit that at first I did just that: to create icons for the lack of whatever. With time I learned and stepped away from art - as that's not an original thing. If you don't believe me, you can freely check out the community to see icons that are NOT related to art. Then tell me whether I have my own style or not. (back to top)

Why haven't you answered the question I left in one of your icon posts?: Probably because the question is easily answerable if you look more closely or do a little digging. If you really need help, I will help out.
