| About: | Welcome to beginnings! The Requirements 1. You must be an adult to join. If you become a member you are telling me that you are over 18 years of age. 2. We prefer original fiction, but fanfic is okay, too. Please let us know what fandom if you're writing fanfic. 3. This group has a maximum word count. Part of the point is to see how much detail, emotion, action etc. you can fit into 500 words or fewer. That’s right! Short and intense are the key words to remember! 4. There is no time limit. Take 15 minutes or 50 or 5 hours. But you must tell us how long it took you to write your piece. 5. Don’t worry about content. Write what you write. Anything goes, as long as it's prose. 6. The challenges issued will be beginnings. They are first-line challenges. You must begin your piece with the line exactly as it is presented to you, unless otherwise stated. 7. Please refrain from using mood and music tags, and always use LJ-cut tags. 8. Spell check is your friend. 9. You must comment on your fellow writers’ work. Read their posts, tell them what you liked, tell them what you would like to have seen more of, or, in a constructive way please, tell them what you felt was missing. Not commenting defeats the purpose of workshop style writing. Some reasons/excuses for not commenting that I have heard: a. I don't have time to comment. Bottom line here, if you have time to write 500 words, you have time to read 500 words. b. I don't feel qualified to critique. Who is, really? Critique is subjective. This is about what you *think*. It's about your opinion. Did something move you? Could something have been better? Was there a line you liked? Did you get confused? These are all legitimate comments. There's no degree or experience requirement to be a reader. Tell the writers what you think. c. No one comments on mine so why should I comment on theirs? If you comment on someone else's work, they will be far more likely to come check yours out in return. This kind of forum is give and take. Show interest. d. I don't want to say what I really think because I'm afraid it will upset the author. I understand this, really. But writers in this community should expect feedback, even if it's not always a rave. Being polite about your critique is a courtesy that we would all appreciate if there was something about the piece that didn't work for you, but none of us will get to be better writers if all we get are positive comments and pats on the back. Be honest, but be kind. Some of the best work I've read has been from people who have rewritten things based on a comment or two that I made. *That* is the point of this forum. Work at it, learn from it. That's great participation. Anyone is welcome to offer a rewrite of any challenge they've done previously, at *any* time. Please link to the previous post so that readers can compare and see your improvements! How it works First line challenges will be issued once a week, (usually) on Monday. Please first submit entries for the current week's challenge. Once you've done so, you may submit entries for previous challenges, as many as you like, but put them in separate posts. Challenge entries are accepted until we post the new one, so if we're late, you can still post! Keep it under 500 words. Seriously. We count. 501 will get your submission deleted. Sorry, but we have to draw a line somewhere, and short is the point here. When you post tell us the following things: - Title of your piece - Submitted by (if you're posting from a fic journal, for instance, instead of your personal journal) - Submitted for which challenge - Notes (in which you tell us anything we need to know.) Remember however, that even if your piece contains characters you work with regularly, your submission for this community must be able to stand alone. - Rating: PG (all audiences, nothing offensive here), R (adult content), XXX (graphic sex, pwp, S&M, hardcore stuff). Please tell us why you rated it as you did so people can make informed choices about whether they’d like to read it (ie. violence, bad language, sex, purple elephants, etc). The reason is really more important than the rating itself, as I want to keep this a reader-friendly community. - Let us know if (and where) we can read more of your work, related or otherwise. YES! We would love your suggestions for challenges. If you have a suggestion, email it to me. If we use it, you'll get credit. Above all, HAVE FUN! | |
