Brian-y Goodness in the Pre-Beatle Years
-- BABY, SCHOOLBOY, RESTLESS YOUNG MAN -- PRE-BEATLE!
Oy gevalt! This is what all the 11-year-olds were wearing in 1945??!
~~ EPPY-SPAM #4 ~~

Brian Samuel Epstein was born on September 19, 1934 to Harry and Malka "Queenie" Epstein.
His day of birth happened to coincide with Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), the holiest of the Jewish High Holidays.
Being the eldest son born on such a solemn occasion, much was expected of the beautiful young boy by his beaming proud parents.

A little over 22 months passed and brother Clive John was born, thus rounding out this perfect little family unit.

Even at this young age he had those bedroom eyes

Living at a prestigous boarding school was expected of proper young British gentlemen of the upper middle class.
This, in fact, was not the best choice for our young Eppy, who was miserable and lonely in that environment.
BOARDING SCHOOL GROUP PORTRAIT 1

Not able to adjust to this rigid type of formal education, poor Brian ended up being transferred to a total of seven institutions of learning during his schoolboy years.

Brian was finally legally permitted to quit school at the tender age of sixteen,
and he started working in the family business, Epstein's Furniture Store.

BRIAN'S SHORT ENGAGEMENT TO SONIA SELIGSON Brian Epstein and Sonia Seligson

He was just beginning to feel settled and content, even to the point of becoming engaged to a young lady, and it may have stayed that way -- but fate and the British army dealt him a bitter card. There was no escaping the draft.
Brian got in trouble. Don't ask.

When he was discharged from the military, Brian was adamant about not wishing to be a plain salesman, but instead ran off to London and was accepted by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA). He enjoyed acting very, very much, and he was good at it, but the actors themselves were not the type of people he could tolerate associating closely with. Their self-centeredness appalled him. He was amazed that they would sneer at and avoid anyone who was down on their luck, because they believed that bad luck might "rub off" on them. Brian was too sympathetic and generous a man to go along with that nonsense anymore. So after approximately a year at RADA, Brian headed on home to Liverpool.
~*~*~

Very demoralized but in a strange way relieved to be back working in the furniture store, Brian took off on exotic vacations by himself.

...in reality, these were occasional boy-quests ;)

He was a brilliant organizer and created daringly unconventional window displays that upset his staid grandfather Isaac. Harry, in a protective maneuver, made Brian manager of his own shop, the phonograph and record subsidiary named NEMS (North End Music Store) which until then was a small ancillary of the Epstein's Furniture stores. This proved to be the master stroke for his future. Brian Epstein's genius prevailed, and the fledgling shop grew and new stores were opened. NEMS became arguably the most popular record stores in the North of England.

Your Brian-love is inspiring. His memory will never be forgotten with you on duty! :)

I signed the petition a while ago, but I really don't know why we need to be having it! Must be some real idiots in the voting committee for the RRHoF...

The assholes in the RRHoF are only in it for the money and the power trip. It's explained in what I hope is non-boring detail in this post, and here is a small part of it that pertains:
The music industry thrives on money and power. Unless some other kind of pressure to induct an individual is applied, the deciders and voters do it only to fill their pockets and return favors.

The RRHOF's main income is brought in by the annual induction ceremony. The people who pay to attend come to see lots of LIVE celebrities show up and accept the awards. Eppy loses because he's not alive.

Also, the music industry people who decide and vote in this thing almost always personally know the people they're voting for. They're kissing butt, paying back favors and slapping backs.

There are very few (if any) decision-making voters who actually knew Brian. Inducting Brian would put no money in any of their pockets. Eppy loses because he's not profitable for them, nor can he pull any strings for them.

...Despite my opinion of the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame," that place is probably going to be around for a long long time. An ungodly number of people worldwide will trust it to be their only source to identify the pioneers of modern music. And they will walk away having no clue about the man who changed the world by bringing us the Beatles.
I hope I can stay "on duty" for a good long time... :)

Hahaa! 40 years of obsession can score you a lot of info and pics!

Plus, since I discovered the internet in 1996 I've become addicted to Eppy-searching everything, not just with Google but every search engine I can find, plus daily eBay searches. And whatever else I can think of.

Heh. All I can figure is I was put on earth to do SOMETHING for Brian Epstein. Who knows what the hell it's gonna be, but as I get older, it feels like "it" is getting closer. Weird.

Didn't he shift schools very often mostly due to the anti-semitism he found there? I read that he went great lengths to hide the fact that his middle name was Samuel...

HAH. And the impersonating senior officer incident always made me laugh...

Also, the 'On Holiday Alone In Venice' picture is brilliant.

Well, one way of thinking he seemed to have picked up from his mother (who was unfortunately sent to Catholic schools because her parents thought they'd give her a better education or something @_@ ), was that whenever anything went wrong, to blame it on anti-semitism. Such as when the queen didn't give him the MBE also (more likely it was because he was gay, and/or they realized he got away with not paying a lot of taxes by taking tour money "under the table"). After all, they had given Jacob Epstein an MBE earlier, and he was every bit as Jewish.

Now, it's true there was a lot of anti-semitism, but Brian couldn't even make it in the Jewish prep school they sent him to. So there you go.

Yes, he hated the name Samuel (I love it, myself, oh well). The middle name was supposed to be a Hebrew name, but they gave his brother Clive the name John. Now wasn't that fair of them. Well, at least Brian wasn't saddled with his father's Hebrew middle name, "Zvi."

Oy vay.

"He lit up the room" according to Nat Weiss, Alistair Taylor, Derek Taylor, and just about every real friend he had.

It tickles me when I read that, even when the Beatles were there, Brian tended to make heads turn more than they did. That's probably why he had to make a real effort to stay in the background. To avoid overshadowing his boys!

I feel sorry for the world, unaware of what we all missed out on from 1967 till now... with what he and Nat were planning to start in just a couple weeks, he would have been something, a force to be reckoned with. I could just see him on Johnny Carson, etc. etc.
