Welcome to bds_fic, where you can find fanfiction about characters from the movie, The Boondock Saints. Fiction on this community is predominantly slash, that means m/m relationships depicted in often graphic terms. If reading about homosexual relationships isn't your thing, skip those particular fics. Flaming's a big no-no.

If you're new, we don't require intro posts here, though you may post a brief intro with your first posting of fic if you like, under a cut. If you're intimidated by the archives, see this post, because there'll hopefully be some good, detailed recs there.

Due to the nature of the community, we ask that only users over the age of 18 join.

We ask this in order to comply with Livejournal TOS. All fics are generally placed under a cut, and headers indicate the rating of the fic, so if you're not of legal age, well... we can't stop you, but consider yourselves duly warned.

This community was founded by bionic, and has grown a lot since it was started. Thanks to everyone who's joined so far, and welcome to those yet to join. Hope you enjoy the community as much as we do!

If you're looking to read or post RPS (Norman Reedus/Sean Patrick Flanery slash), I suggest the flandus and youmarvelousboy communities. bds_fic is simply for character-fic, unless you're doing a Sean Patrick Flanery/Murphy crossover - as long as one of the main characters in your fic is a character from the movie, you may post the fic here.

POST ALL FIC BEHIND A CUT.
Keep author's notes to a MINIMUM, and to the POINT. If they're extensive, put them behind the cut. Read the FAQ for 'how to do an LJ-cut'.
If you're posting a link to a fic, INCLUDE THE HEADERS with RATING and DISCLAIMER.
If a picture inspired you, post a link to the picture. DO NOT HOTLINK. Upload the picture to your own webspace, or to a free image host like imagecave.com or photobucket.com.
PLEASE DO NOT POST MUSIC. We are not an mp3 sharing community.
THINK before you ask about certain types of fic. Explore all avenues, check the archives thoroughly. Chances are that if you're asking, that's what other people will do. Don't make everyone else do the hard work for you.

Take a look at this post for a few recs. Add to it. It's there as a resource if you've just joined us to get a feel for the sort of fic that gets posted here. (And in the case of some of the recs, some fic that doesn't make it here, unfortunately.)

If you can't find a beta within five minutes of finishing your fic, wait for a day. The community isn't going anywhere, trust me.

Acceptable Posts:

Fanfiction. Any pairing. Slash, Gen, Het - all welcome. AUs welcome. Crossovers welcome. See the FAQ section for more information. If there's a character from the movie in your fic, it's fine for posting.

Challenges. Preferably something more than "someone write me some Connor/Murphy porn, please?" Make people really think.

Related LJ community pimpage. Have a community related to The Boondock Saints that you want to share? Post about it here - only once, please. Nobody needs their friends page flooding with ads.

Unacceptable Posts:

Quizzes/memes. Posts containing "Which BDS character are you?" quiz results and the like will be deleted.

Personal issues. If you have an issue with another user, keep it off the board, please.

Flames. Flames will be deleted, and the poster will be banned. Constructive criticism is the way to go, people. If you think something could be improved, try to phrase it more delicately than "this totally sucks." Because we all have feelings here.

Anything that belongs on communities related solely to the movie. This comm's for fic or challenges.

Unrelated community pimpage. Any ads posted for communities that are not in any way related to
The Boondock Saints will be deleted.

Website pimpage. Even if it's related to the movie. There are movie-dedicated communities to pimp your websites on, please post to them. This community is for fanfiction.

Icons, wallpapers, fanart, videos, etc. Try bds_icons for icons and bds_media for everything else. FIC here.

RPS. Anything involving Norman or Sean (unless it's a Connor/Norman AU thing) should be posted at either flandus or youmarvelousboy.

Fic that DOES NOT INCLUDE HEADERS/DISCLAIMER. Please. Read the rules, and include headers with every single post of fic, even if it's no more than a link back to fic.

How To Post:

To be able to post, you must first join the community. After you have done this, you'll be able to select "bds_fic" from a list headed Post to at the bottom of your update page.

Subject
Can include whether you're posting a drabble or a fic, the title, the pairing and the rating.

Headers which should be included on every fic post:

You must put your title in the subject line.

Warnings: (warn if it’s slash/sensitive material - for further definition, read on)
Disclaimer: (this one is mandatory)

Notes: (thanks to betas, etc, and any other notes if you have them, but please don't make them longer than the actual fic.)
Feedback: (Would you like feedback/constructive criticism? It's no use just saying "I'd like feedback, please don't be mean", and expecting nothing but praise. Flaming, however, is not tolerated. Be *constructive* with the feedback you give, too, if you think there's something about a fic that could be improved, say so, but don't leave only negative comments - it's bad for morale.) Be SPECIFIC about what you would like from feedback. "Give me all you've got" implies that you'd like everything pointed out. "What did I do wrong, what did I do right?" will ensure you receive rounded crit. If there's something in particular that you're concerned with, like characterization, ask about that. Although, really, that's something that you could ask a beta about before posting.
Some authors also include a link to their personal archive.

Warning about sensitive material
This includes, but is not limited to: character death, rape, extreme violence, BDSM, D/s, cross-dressing, mpreg, abuse, etc. If you're not sure, include a warning anyway. Connor/Murphy slash need not include a twincest warning, since I think everybody knows that they're brothers at the very least.

All fics should be placed behind an LJ-cut.
Leave your headers outside the cut, then enter <lj-cut> before the main body of your fic, and then at the end, </lj-cut>.

Do not rush to post!
I can't stress this enough. Don't rattle something off in 30 minutes then post it unbeta'd and expect more than the die-hard fans who have the time to read everything to fall at your feet with praise. If you think it's far too short to bother a beta with, at least have the decency to a) read it through yourself - more than once - and b) ask a friend to look over it for you. Someone else will spot things that you, as the author, will not. Believe me.

How do I do an lj-cut? See above.

I want to make my cut say something other than "read more..." How do I do that? Use this code instead: <lj-cut text="put whatever you want your cut to say here"> before the main body of your fic, and then at the end, </lj-cut>

I made a mistake! Can I edit my post? Absolutely. There's no need to delete the post, just go to the page the post is on and click on this icon: which will be close to the top of the entry. It'll take you to a page where you can edit and re-save your entry.

Do you accept pairings other than Connor/Murphy? Certainly! Original characters and AU fics are also welcome, as long as the fic involves at least one character from the movie.

How do I rate my fic? Okay, here's a rough guide.

G = No touching. A friendly, non-sexual portrayal of a relationship. You might choose to rate "G, but with swearing," or you might choose to rate it "PG13 for swearing", that's up to you. No violence.

PG = Chaste kisses, hand-holding. Cute, disney-type romance. Extremely mild violence, like floor-wrestling, that sort of thing.

PG13 = Deep kissing, groping, as long as clothes are kept on. Mild violence - punches, kicks, etc.

R = Sex without penetration, non-graphic sex, basically. The sort of violence you'd expect to see in a similarly rated movie - not extreme. i.e. Blood and broken limbs are okay but graphically described dismemberment should be rated higher.

NC-17 = Anything goes - graphic sex/violence, etc. Be sure to include warnings all the same.

Do I have to leave feedback? Nobody's going to come after you with sticks if you don't, but if you read something on the list, it's only good manners to leave a few words for the author. Likewise, authors, it's always nice to thank a reader for taking the time to tell you they enjoyed your fic.

How do I spell their names? The most popular spellings: Connor MacManus, Murphy MacManus, Rocco, Paul Smecker, Detective Greenly, Detective Duffy, Detective Dolly, Da, and their Ma's name is, according to the script, Annabelle. I realise that Connor's name is spelt "Conner" in DVD credits and on the inlays of certain regions' DVDs - Connor is the spelling used in the script, however. You'd be surprised how many people turn off from a fic after reading "Conner."

What is a Beta?

Betas will look over fics before you post them, and help you to improve in areas from spelling to characterization. Although you aren't required to use a beta, it's recommended that you get someone else to read over your fic before you post it, since another person will often see things that you may have missed. Also, if English isn't your first language, a beta-reader can help iron out any confusing phrases, so they are a really good idea.
