Boycott Canada's Census May. 12th, 2006 @ 07:18 pm
[info]raining_peace
From http://www.vivelecanada.ca/

Lockheed Martin (the biggest U.S. weapons contractor and in fact the biggest weapons contractor in the world) is working on the next Canadian Census. That's because Statistics Canada chose to contract out the part of the census dealing with software, hardware and printing to Lockheed Martin--despite the fact that Stat Can promotes itself at home and internationally as a leader in information gathering.

What this means is that your tax dollars for the census will go to a non-Canadian corporation. It means that Canadian jobs will be lost due to the automation of the census. And it means that a large part of the census will be handled by a corporation that makes weapons of mass destruction. A corporation that reaps huge benefits financially from the war in Iraq, a war that Canadians rightfully oppose. A corporation that works behind the scenes to influence U.S. public policy to help maximize its own profits. A corporation that is leading the development of the Star Wars missile-defense program for the Pentagon. A corporation that is consistently rated one of the worst corporations in the world for various reasons including human rights abuses. And a corporation that might invade your privacy.

Say no to Lockheed Martin's involvement in the Canadian census. Say yes to Canada. Join Canadians across the country and BOYCOTT the census.

It is Illegal to not fill out your census forms. Failure to do so could result in a maximum fine of $500 and maximum jail time of 3 months. If you do not wish to face this penalty, there are still ways to show our government that you are not happy with the contracting of parts of the census to Lockheed Martin. To find out what you can do, other than a complete boycott, check out http://census.vivelecanada.ca/

» Bill Bennett -- A Mandarin's View
Just finished a great book on the Bill Bennett years (1975-86), entitled Bill Bennett: A Mandarin's View by Bob Plecas, one of his former senior staffers. It was a quick, breezy read that would have been made better if it were a longer, more critical assessment of Bennett along the lines of David Mitchell's book on the premier's father, W.A.C. Bennett and the Rise of British Columbia. Still, it's a nice antidote to the two Bill Bennett books written by Stan Persky (Son of Socred and Bennett II) and well timed as we're just a couple of weeks away from the 20th anniversary of Expo 86, Bennett's legacy project. If you have any interest into how BC got to where it is today and perhaps some historical insight into the figure our current Premier likely modeled himself after, I recommend you pick it up...

» World Urban Forum 2006 in Vancouver!
By 2050, 7.5 billion people will live in urban areas throughout the world. Our survival depends on the survival of all cities.

Global Warming, air pollution, urban sprawl, overflowing landfills, water shortages, disease and global conflict will be the legacy of this century unless we move quickly towards sustainability. This will take vision, commitment and partnership. It will require collaboration among experts and the involvement of all citizens.

The World Urban Forum (WUF) is an international meeting on urban-issues, produced by the United Nations and the governments of Canada to be held in Vancouver this June.

The WUF will be a unique opportunity for citizens, community groups, academics and governments from around the world to meet and work together to find new solutions to the complicated problems facing our quickly growing cities.

» "Recall Emerson" Userpic
I've whipped up a "Recall Emerson" livejournal Userpic.

Hope you can tell me where there is anti-Emerson activity and/or images?

» Rock the Vote
Okay so me and 3 friends are organizing a "rocking the vote" event in Vernon, B.C. The event will be for the purpose of bringing voting awareness to our area through music.

We're looking to have it at the rec centre in the Arena. We are planning to invite all of the federal candidates in the Okanagan -- Shuswap riding (except Gordon Campbell the independant not the priemer, we can't find his contact info... can anyone help?) and we're also looking at inviting whatever riding Kelowna is in as well.

We are looking for Bands to play this event for free. Any connections?
Also we are looking for sponsorship right now our expenses is looking at $600+ and we are broke. We'll fly banners and of course your name will be on the poster.

We will also have a getyourvoteon.com booth which we need someone to run

I'm also looking for volunteers for security, running consession stands and manning the doors. please contact me via this post or e-mail.

Interesting editorial on the Green Party.

http://www.brandonsun.com/pfstory.php?story_id=14616

Out of curiousity, are those folks thinking of voting green doing so because of their dislike of the big 3 parties? Or is it because of their environmental roots?

Vote NDP if you’re thinking green

By: Dave Cannon
The environment has not been getting much attention in the run-up to the federal election so far. This is not too surprising considering how weak the Liberals have demonstrated themselves to be when it comes to environmental policy.

» Looking to bounce some ideas off of someone
I want to bounce ideas off of someone who is open-minded and in favour of the idea of a Youth Based Provincal Party.

I'm talking, people under, let's say 30 who are interested in politics who are interested in stirring up the legislature, and in future, parliament.

Now I'm not looking to form a political party over night, I know it's a long road and a lot of member gathering, this may turn out to be just a kick ass fanclub of Politics and like minded individuals, but I am looking to bounce ideas off of someone who would be in favour of a youth party.

» Teachers don't want to be judged on how well (or poorly) they do their job!
FSA time again!

Lanzinger says groups like the Fraser Institute use the results which have a damaging impact on education. “We believe the teachers assessment of students, school based assessment of students is much more valuable and much more genuine,” said Lanzinger. “It is also very, very false to rate or rank schools based on those tests.”

In other words "Only the way we want to rate performance is valid and any other views make us angry *pout*"

Maybe they are right about one things.  We should have an independant third party run the tests, and evaluate the results.  That would give us as parents one more tool to decide where we would like to place our children.

GLOBE AND MAIL/CTV/STRATEGIC COUNSEL POLL: Liberals pull ahead in B.C.

"In B.C., the Liberals appear to be pulling into a solid lead in what was a tight three-way race, gaining strength as the Conservatives suffer a 13-point decline from last year's election results. The Liberals have the support of 39 per cent of declared voters in the province, compared to 29 per cent for the NDP and 26 per cent for the Conservatives."

From http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ArticleNews/TPStory/LAC/20051222/ELECPOLL22/TPNational/Canada

I wonder where the Liberal support is. As something of an aside, living in Saanich-Gulf Islands, I have yet to see a Liberal campaign sign. The election prediction project (which seems to have a decent track record on this sort of thing) http://www.electionprediction.org/2005_fed/p_59bc.html has a lot of BC races listed as too close to call.

Anyone know about any island-wide polling?

Throne Speech Delivered
Sep, 12 2005 - 2:00 PM

VICTORIA(CKNW/AM980) - Some interesting news in today's Speech from the Throne kicking off the Campbell government's second term--including another go at electoral reform.

The biggest surprise in the speech is that British Columbians will be asked a second time whether to adopt the Single Transferrable Vote or stick with the current First-Past-the-Post system.

STV just came up short of the 60 per-cent approval margin in May's election.

Now the government says there will be a second referendum in November of 2008.

But between now and then, the government will try to better inform people about the differences.

The Electoral Boundaries Commission will be asked to consider how ridings would be configured under STV when it conducts its regular boundary review.

As well, the government will fund active information campaigns for both the yes and no sides and the referendum question itself will be debated in the legislature with the Premier staying neutral.

Whichever model prevails in the referendum will be the system used in the next provincial election in May of 2009.

Other surprises--Question Period will be doubled to 30 minutes in length; the NDP will chair and have majority membership on a new Special Committee on Sustainable Aquaculture; and the government plans to create a new on-the-ground decision making team to focus the fight against the Pine Beetle infestation.
» telus sucks (x-posted to other places)
i dont know how many of you have telus as your isp, but if you do, try accessing this site.

apparently, telus thinks they are protecting themselves from rebellious union activity by busting a chinese government and flat out disallowing people to access the site.

i think im going to write a letter to the crtc. im not too optimistic since the crtc isnt doing a damn thing about other telus-related issues, such as the near-monopoly we see in the cell phone market. (think about the rates your friends in the uk, godless socialist europe, and the usa are enjoying in comparison to ours).

but really, should telecom companies decide what is appropriate for public viewing?

» So now that the BC Election is over...
We can turn to Federal Politics.... (or is that not allowed in this forum)....

Anyways....  Tomorow we have a few votes comming up in the House.  The Conservatives say they will now sit out the main budget vote, but vote against the amendment brought on by the NDP/Liberal deal.

How do you guys see this comming down?  I think both will pass and we will see things continue untill the Gomery Report is in....
» Pondering
So in all the recent news I have heard about the NDP, all I hear is

More money for this, More money for that, but they dont say WHERE the money will come from.  Will they carry though with the transportation improvements that the current Gov. has planned for.  Or will they raise taxes.

Just the though of the NDP being elected scares me.  The BC economey would be devastated!
