Working at Blockbuster sucks! So why do we/did we?
I just started working there 2 months ago.  My hire date was August 1st.  The computers, for one, suck and are from the stone ages.  It's hard to sift through the information to figure out why there's a hold on an account, for example.  Nothing is ever stocked right and I'm made to feel like I can do something about it.  I'm told to follow "suspicious looking" people around who might steal.  It's always one thing after another.  The customers are idiots.  They never have their card or id out and can't understand when you ask them for it.  Like we just ring it up and trust they'll bring it back??  I've actually gotten attitude about it.  "Why can't I just give my phone number?"  You could give anyone' s phone number and rip them off.  This isn't the library.  We have to verify it's YOU buying the rentals, and that you're not just gonna rip them off for good under someone else's account.  Many many more things.  Little to no training was given to me.  I'm still trying to figure out some things, but I've done good guessing and figuring things out on my own.  I don't know how much longer I can work there.  Some things are fun and worthwhile, and I like being in the movie world and knowing about things in entertainment.  That's why I'm still there I guess.

I worked at BB for two years, then quit. I was offered my old position again and I took it. It was pretty much the dumbest mistake I've ever made. I hate working there SO FUCKING MUCH. I've been back for five days and I'm already looking for another job.

I've been working for Blahbuster for 4.5 years now. Why? I can work 10 hours a week and get health, dental, and life insurance. Win.

I worked at BBV because I lost my state gov't internship due to budget cuts, and they were the only place that had an opening when I was desperate for a job.

I stopped working at BBV because the next summer, the university offered me a job that paid more, with free housing, and guaranteed 40 hours a week.

I worked at BBV for 2.5year, I was a shift leader but got fired for an asale violation. Once you get into the flow of the job it's super easy! I use to normally work the open-5 shift alone till someone came in at 4pm, and do all the morning paperwork, money work, movie and game counts, FOS, checkins, ringing people up and whatever else came along. I got to the point I could do it with a flick of the wrist basically.

The acct history thing took me about 6 months to completely figure it out.

The computer works for what it is though. Can you really think of a way to upgrade them cheaply? I would've rather have a raise, then new computers.

I don't know if the SOP has changed or varies? But there is a policy in it that states you can't have something Checked Out so long it sells to you, regardless Employee or Personal account.

Let my family watch it, it gets misplaced, it sells, you know the drill.

The lame part of it was that it charged to my credit card, and got a $1.25 outta it, for me returning it the morn after it sold. AND THEN the next day there was a 38units Certified Field Destroy on the title...

My boss was a total Gemini (in other words kinda two faced. one day she praised you, the next she wants nothing to do with you.)

Ehh, Whatever though

Back when I worked for Blockbuster, it didn't suck! I'd come home from work exhausted, but with a smile on my face. This was before there was so much pressure to sell, when we could really focus on customer service, fun contests, whatever. Also, the staff at my store were all wonderful, and we all got along great!

I agree with you on that one. I love going into work and having fun, helping customers, and seeing (at least most of them) leave happy and satisfied. Now it's all about selling this, that, and the other damn thing. It's like you force me to do something (sell) and I don't want to, but left on my own with no pressure I don't mind doing it at all.

I've been working at Blockbuster since April... and I've been trying to leave since I started. I started because they were the only ones that called me back... and the fact that I get health insurance for being part time.

I currently hold another job in the entertainment industry and I do some arty-type things, but none of that gives me benefits since I'm still trying to work out the business side of it.

Some days can be fun when I'm not pressured to sell anything. The job really is not so bad when you can just work and enjoy the day and not be pressured about selling crap that doesn't really benefit anyone unless they actually use it...

I'd also probably like it better if we got raises more often. At my previous job, we got raises every 3 or 6 months... If I stayed there, I'd be making double what I am at Blockbuster right now... I regret leaving it now, but I didn't get any benefits there- and now that I'm a college graduate and can't be on my parents' insurance, I kind of need that. I feel stuck, heh.

Just wait until you get:
"But I thought you didn't have anymore late fees, whats this 1.25?"

Granted, I've been gone from Blockbuster for almost 2 years, but when I go in I still hear customers say that.

I've already gotten that. I'm pretty good at explaining the restocking fee and all that.
