| Reminder! |
[Dec. 6th, 2009|10:16 pm] |
Just so you keep it in mind, the deadline for the 22nd issue is December 18, which is less than two weeks. How are things going? ^_^
(In order to help you answer that question, our own hinotori_writes has scripted a handy Shousetsu Bang*Bang Word Counter! As well as basic word count, it generates tallies for certain... common... keywords. Post your current count here and compare where we're at. XD) |

| Beta reader pool for Bang*Bang no.22 |
[Nov. 21st, 2009|09:59 pm] |
This is the beta reader pool signup for issue 22. If you would like to beta-read for the December issue, comment here with the number of stories you're willing to handle, and any other notes on your betaing style (ex. if you're willing to help with issues other than spelling/grammar, such as plot, characterization, and prose flow).
You may comment here also if you need a beta reader for your submission, particularly if you have specific issues with your story that need looking at. Please indicate clearly whether you're seeking a beta or volunteering as one!
To avoid blind-leading-the-blind situations, please volunteer as a beta reader only if you yourself are confident of your spelling, grammar and syntax, and that words mean what you think they mean when you use them in sentences. As a minimum, you must be able to fix the majority of the problems listed in the resources linked from the Writing Aids and Standards post.
As with illustrators, please contact beta readers by responding directly to the comments. |

| Prospective participants list for Bang*Bang no.22 |
[Nov. 5th, 2009|04:44 pm] |
This is the signup post for the December 29** regular issue. The submission cutoff date is December 18. Please comment here if you plan to submit a story for December, or if you'd like to illustrate. Illustrators should provide a link to their art by way of sample. Signup for the beta reader pool will be in an upcoming post.
As always, the December issue of Bang*Bang has NO SET THEME, but feel free to write holiday-themed stories if that speaks to you. Also, expend some NaNoWriMo wordcount on those WIPs left over from previous issues and send them in. XD

( illustrators )
** Although if you're very good one might try to hurry that up to give you guys an extra refuge from the family over the holidays. Don't tell them I said that. XD |

| Sequels, prequels, spinoffs and shared universes |
[Oct. 30th, 2009|05:38 pm] |
Now that everyone's had a chance to read the latest issue, a project I should have initiated ages ago:
I know for a fact that some of you authors have written sequels (prequels, spinoffs...) to your Shousetsu Bang*Bang stories, that you didn't submit because they were too long or too fragmentary or too PG-rated. They may be on your personal websites, or published in imaginarybeasts or some other zine. Maybe the story was set in a shared universe in which others have written or drawn art. In any case, not everyone knows who you are or where these related works are to be found, even for those of you who're diligent about answering comments under your "real" LJ handles. XD I'm also pretty sure there are ones out there the Eye of Sauron I haven't seen and don't know about. So I've set about compiling a master list! It will be maintained as a "sticky" post at the top of s2b2.
* If you have related works you'd like the readers of your SSBB stories to see, comment in this post with a list in the following format:
Title of comment: your SSBB pseud(s) Body of comment: [name of related work, linked to where it is archived online] - [relationship to] [original SSBB story or story arc, linked to s2b2 post or author tag] - [any notes or warnings you deem sensible] Simplify as necessary if, say, you've written half a dozen sequels to one SSBB story; no need to repeat info, as long as it's clear. *g* I'd appreciate individual links to stories, though, rather than top section pages.
* If yoy don't want to reveal your "real" online identity, email me and we can easily work something out. The stories can be posted in an LJ dedicated to the SSBB pseud, for instance, or published as public Google documents via the shousetsubangbang account. |

O-tsukare-sama to dipping_sauce for the upload, and to the general you for doing a great Occam's Razor job with a wacky theme. There are a couple of sequels and carry-overs from previous issues; as well as a cameo appearance, if I'm not mistaken, for aficionados of Easter eggs. XD
Happy All Hallows' Week, and don't let the flu bug bite!
Love, the Editor
P.S. I don't usually make editorial recs off the archive, but for the sake of relative newcomers it's hard to let this theme go without highlighting The Ballad Of Barefoot Robin, or The Ridiculous Seduction Of Lieutenant Worthington by Roumonte Emi, surely the granddaddy of the genre as it pertains to SSBB. IIRC this was also the story that made two-parters possible, in the sense that I was hardly going to let wordcount prevent me from running it. XD |

| Themes for 2010 (so futuristic!) |
[Oct. 12th, 2009|01:48 am] |
February: FOOD. Each story will be accompanied by a recipe; the issue will go up with an addendum post where readers and original authors can post photos of the resulting foodpr0n. I'm informing you guys of these details in advance so you have time to figure things out (you don't have to cook/bake in order to write, but your recipe has to be realistic so that someone else might if they wanted).
April: HISTORICAL ROMANCE. Wikipedia offers some thoughts if one wants to go the full genre cliche route, but originality is also encouraged of course. I think it might be fun to uphold a rule of at least one real historical character per story, although s/he doesn't have to be part of the main couple. A celebrity cameo of sorts. XD
June: PICK YOUR THEME. Instead of everyone writing to the same theme, you'll pick from a list of writing prompts, such as those used on comms like 31_days. The list will be posted with the preceding issue.
August: SCHOOLBOYS! This will be Bang*Bang's 5th anniversary issue, so back to basics as well as back to school. ♥
October: FAIRY TALES AND FOLKLORE. All these themes were suggested multiple times, this one most frequently. In view of the global zeitgeist and the street date close to Halloween, note that some form of warning will be devised for stories that contain sparkly vampires.
December: THEME-FREE. As always.

Questions? Comments? Leave'em here. Don't forget: submissions for issue 21 are due in 8 days (on the 20th)! |

No asterisks as all the stories are illustrated, of course (Shinko Hisada's goes with the cover piece, although I have done dodgy things to Ravyn's artwork). ^_^ Thanks to dipping_sauce for uploading, to the writers and betas, and of course to all the illustrators who participated in this complex venture. I'll be putting up the illustration galleries on s2b2 as well, to archive the submissions as a permanent part of this issue. TWENTIETH ISSUE and four years this week, for reals! Couldn't have done it without you.
Happy back to school, if that's where you're at,

| Not so paranoid if it happens |
[Aug. 30th, 2009|11:34 pm] |
1) All of you who submitted a story to the August issue of Bang*Bang should have gotten some sort of email in response from me. If you haven't, then we're in trouble, so let me know. XD The issue will be up on September 4, this Friday.
2) The beta pool does good work, so these days I save the grammar/punctuation discourse for those supercilious one-on-one emails I know you love so much guyz. Verb tense consistency keeps coming up, though, so a public refresher on that might be in order (and I suspect that goes for the betas as well). The clearest resource I could find on a quick Google is this: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/601/08/
( The majority of the corrections falls into two categories )
A fleeting point: as the hobbit might say, less than half of you need more than half again as many commas as you started off with, and a handful of periods to truncate those run-ons as well. But I won't go over that one again. XD
3) The next bangbangwhimper extracurricular will be AUDIOPODDING. Comment if you're interested (you can read your own stories as well as those of others)? |

| You know the drill |
[Jun. 17th, 2009|12:38 am] |
At this time of posting, the deadline for the June issue is in three days (June 19, 11:59PM wherever you are). Just a reminder. *g*
VARIOUS TALKING POINTS RE: ILLUSTRATIONS
1) Over the next few weeks, dipping_sauce and I will be reorganizing the existing SSBB illustrations and tagging for illustrators. As far as you guys are concerned, this should be an invisible process. I want to note, though, that we'll be saving the images that are currently hosted elsewhere and uploading them to the main SSBB repository. The reason is simply that over the years, several Photobucket accounts and private webspaces have proven unstable, and we're not always able to get hold of the artists when the pictures disappear - nor do we necessarily know it, unless a reader notifies us. It's just easier to have them backed up and all in one place. Of course, this applies to future issues as well. You can still submit illustrations via link, we'll be saving and reuploading.
If any of you have reservations regarding this, drop me an email at the usual SSBB address, or LJ-msg me as so many of you choose to do. *g*
1a) At one point I was pondering a Dreamwidth policy. Later I realized SSBB didn't need a Dreamwidth policy, since there's no practical reason at this time to start mirroring either the comm or the archive (although it's nice that a fuss-free, working emergency backup option exists), and anyway for every person who's moved there's another who feels strongly that SSBB and such comms should stay on LJ. In the event that we might have a DW policy in future, though, full disclosure is that the server on which the SSBB image repository resides belongs to one of the owners of DW. It's upkept via donation and I can't think of any potential for conflict of interest, but there's ingrained paranoia for you. XD; The plan was always for SSBB to acquire its own domain name and webspace (recommendations for either welcome). However, the current server is stable and unlikely to jettison one for pr0nz, and peace of mind is hard to buy.
2) Also as part of the reorganization, we'll be inserting the pictures from the Fan Art Challenge into their corresponding stories, so archive surfers can actually see them. Again, if any of you illustrators or writers have reservations regarding this, let me know (can't think of any potential hangups here either, but I can always be surprised XD;). |

| Artwork for Bang*Bang no.20 - Part I |
[May. 25th, 2009|01:18 am] |
We have 22 25 pictures from 13 14 artists (there was a mixup!). ^_^ To keep things manageable, I've split them into two posts. If/when you know which piece you'll be writing for, comment in the appropriate post and I'll add your name under it. Again, multiple people can sign up to write for one picture if they like. You're also free to touch base with the artist for ideas or further collaboration.

| Art Challenge II + the regular SSBB issue after next (ATTN PLS IS CONFUSING) |
[Mar. 17th, 2009|03:30 am] |
The more detail-oriented may remember that a few entries back, I said the next fan challenge will involve illustrators again, but in an "innovative" faculty. XD So here goes--
It's occurred to me over the years that it's unfair for SSBB artists to always tailor their illustrations to the stories, rather than the inverse. So at least once this year we are doing the inverse! Note there is a TBA for the August issue theme in the publication schedule. The theme for that issue (#20) is now PICTURE PERFECT, meaning the illustrations will determine the stories.
( HOW THIS WORKS )
If the dates seem spaced rather far apart, it's because there is an issue happening in-betwixt time - in July - which hopefully people are writing and illustrating for as well! For the record, that one is HE BLINDED ME WITH SCIENCE, and involves spaceships, robots, clones, and all other SF tropes loveable or dystopian.
...Lots of dates, yeah. XD; Let me know if anything needs clarifying!
EDIT -- yes since people are doing it anyway artists sign up by commenting here pls. Nothing formal, just so I have some idea of what to expect. XD |
