BSG Fanfiction Readers & Writers Poll

Recently several members of the BSG fandom noticed that fanfiction writers were not posting as many stories as they once had and, being the inquisitive people that they were, they began to discuss why this might be.

This discussion proved intriguing enough to prompt a couple of us to create a pair of polls exploring the complex relationship between fanfiction writers and readers as a means of getting to the bottom of this particular fandom mystery.

So if you are a reader or writer of Battlestar Galactica fanfiction, please head on over to our new community [info]fandompollgeek and complete the appropriate poll (poll for writers; poll for readers). If you are both a reader and a writer, go ahead and complete both polls. Once we have our results we’ll post them to the community for everyone to review and discuss.

And if you, like us, are intent on solving the mysteries of the fannish universe via the most objective means LJ has to offer, or just happen to have an unnatural obsession with ticky-boxes and/or pie charts, please feel free to join the [info]fandompollgeek community; after all, there are undoubtedly other fannish – or ficish – questions out there and it is our goal to answer them– preferably through the use of spreadsheets, bar graphs and pretty multi-colored pie charts.

But first, go and answer our writers and readers polls!

I think the problem might be...

That if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

What I mean by this is not a hack, but BSG {for the first 2.5 seasons anyway} was written so extremely well that to put fanfic to it is kinda pointless or not necessary.

I mean, the only times I've considered writing fanfic is when I've thought that there may have been something missing in the plot that I would say 'wouldn't it be cool if THIS happened!?' and rolled around ideas in my head {which to be honest, I suck at writing} I find this most prevalent with Buffy and Angel, considering they left a ton of stuff out that the fanfic writers would be able to exploit and write their own stories on.

Having said that though, I feel that writers of fanfic that put their own twists on the stories like creating romances that aren't there are just writing for the sake of writing. {Not that that's a bad thing, just don't expect me to read it}

Heh, that's funny - I've always said that to me, BSG is the perfect show to write/read fic for precisely because the narrative is so full of holes, as opposed to other shows I think are perfect on their own. And I'm a gen fan! That's not even a bad thing, necessarily; I'd actually say it's inspirational, precisely because it's so flawed.

Very cool community. Are you going to include other fandoms?

There will be lots coming up, starting on Sunday. That's when the [info]bsg_bigbang comm. will start posting their fics and these fics are all 20,000+ words.
