Hey everyone,

Just some quick announcements before I dash to the airport so I can fly south for Comic-con.

BASCon 2009 - It's a go!

We are having an event this year, slightly scaled down from our usual magnum opus, yet hopefully still a lot of fun. We're calling it: BASCon 9 Overnight and it will run from October 3rd to October 4th. See, we really mean overnight!

Although this year’s con will be a smaller event than usual, we’ll still offer many of the features you enjoy, including a variety of loose panel discussions (more on this in a later note), on-going song-vids, and the ever-popular raffle. The con will run from Saturday afternoon till 1am, and then resume Sunday morning and continue until noon. Munchies will be provided Saturday evening, and of course guests staying at the hotel may partake of the Manager’s Cocktail Reception and the Complimentary Breakfast.

We will be back at our yearly stomping grounds: the Embassy Suites San Francisco Airport - South San Francisco. It is located at 250 Gateway Boulevard, South San Francisco, California, 94080. (Telephone: 1-650-589-3400; Fax: 1-650-876-0305.) The hotel is less than a mile and a half from San Francisco International Airport and only nine miles south of Downtown San Francisco.

If you're interested in staying at the hotel, BASCon has established a special rate for our 2009 attendees of $129.00/night, plus any taxes. (Gratuities are not included). Wireless high speed Internet access is available in all rooms at the cost of $9.95 per computer/per day. Reservations must be made by September 17, 2009 to be eligible for this rate. For reservation details and for more information about the hotel, please visit http://www.bascon.org/hotel.htm. Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-EMBASSY; however, we recommend you call direct. Be sure to tell the operator that you are with BASCon. Questions? Contact Keeker at hotelinfo@bascon.org.

Membership Rates for 2009

Attending Member Rate: $40 now until September 25, 2009.
After September 25, payment must be made at the door.
There will be no supporting memberships or dealers this year.

Registration: Please visit our website at www.BASCon.org to register online. Payment may be made by check or by PayPal. NOTE: after registering via PayPal, remember to mail or email the registration form to us. If you do not send us the form, then the name you registered with will appear on your badge. Questions? Contact Liz at registration@bascon.org.

CHANGES TO BASCon YAHOO GROUP

We've had the same YahooGroup since the beginning of BASCon but as of August 1st, we will have a new one: BASCon 2.0.

Same list, slightly different name. The upshot is that we don't have administrative control over the current group and efforts to contact the previous list owner have so far proven to be slightly daunting. We're starting a new group that will have multiple owners so this won't happen again. Ah, progress.

Simply go to the new address (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bascon2_0 and re-subscribe. All contact information will be changed to reflect the new group. Come August 1st, no new information will be posted to the current YahooGroup.

BASCon on Facebook

Yes, BASCon now has a Facebook page: <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/BASCon-Convention/94398423574?ref=nf</a>BASCon Convention</a>. If you have a Facebook account, you can become a fan! FYI - Make sure you are becoming a fan of "BASCon Convention" and not just "BASCON". There's a family group with the name "BASCON" and it's not us. Who knew? Have questions? You're welcome to post them here or send them to me directly at <a href="ladyj.965@gmail.com</a>. I'll have intermittent internet access while I'm gone so if there's a bit of a delay in a reply, that's why. Thanks! Jackie BASCon

Where: Panda Inn at Horton Plaza
When: Friday, July 24th – 7:30pm
Come join us for an evening of fun and friendly company for the fifth year running! Just in case you're unsure, yes, we do mean slashers of the "homoerotic fanfiction" sort. In addition to the usual tasty food and great conversation, we'll be almost like our own little mini-convention, complete with custom badges, door-prizes, a swap-table, raffle, and more! A great way to meet new people and have a great time – we hope you'll join us!

My apologies for the late announcement, this has been a busy year.

Full Details and Registration Information Here

I need to make sure the restaurant knows how many of us are coming, so advance registration is necessary. We had around 35 folks last year, and we hope to make it an even bigger and better event this year!

The response to Stuart's untimely passing has been amazing and heartwarming and overwhelming. It's obvious he touched many lives and we all have a lot of good memories of him to carry with us.

I've started a community where we can share stories and pictures and have a place to gather to remember him. Everyone, please feel free to join and post to [info]minotaursfriend, and pass the word on to anyone else you think would be appropriate.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I post this today. My very good friend, and I know good friend of many of you, Stuart Carroll ([info]minotaurs) passed away this morning, June 14. During the night he suffered a massive heart attack, and despite tremendous efforts to save him, he passed away at 6:00 a.m. He had good friends by his side until the end, and his family is gathering to decide on the next steps.

I met Stuart when I ran Gaylaxicon in 2004 in San Diego, and together we not only started San Diego Queer Sci-Fi, but became good friends. Many of us gathered on a weekly basis to play board games, and he helped out with the new local San Diego convention, Conjecture. He also brought me into slash fandom, and when we attended CON.TXT together last year I was stunned by how both famous and loved he was by that community.

I cannot express how sad I am right now. He was a truly wonderful, intelligent, witty spirit that will be sadly and sorely missed by those who knew him.

If you think you might have paid for a DVD but you're not sure, drop me a line. I have the list we made at the con and I can check against that.

Cheers!

I'm happy to report that we finally have Disc 2 of the BASCon vid show copied and ready for distribution. Big thanks to JenCat who patiently copied and printed what we needed. A caveat: the discs will not match on the surface - the originals were silver. The replacements are white. Somehow, I don't think y'all will care.

Anyway, I'm going to be mailing things out over the next week or so.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you're going to be at Escapade and you already paid for your copy, Jen can give it to you there. She'll also have some extras on hand for sale.

Questions? Feel free to drop me a line at ladyj.965@gmail.com with "DVD question" in the subject line.

I want to thank everyone for being so patient while this got worked out.

There's some small (and right now it's small) progress. I have another lead on someone who may be able to to do the duplication of the second disc. A couple of other leads didn't pan out which is why this is taking so long.

Fortunately I was able to get all of our original discs back from the duplicator with no other fallout.

Rest assured, I haven't forgotten about this and am working on it.

Cheers

Jackie.

Hello,

Those of you who attended BASCon 2008 (and probably more than a few of you who did not) know that the second DVD of the vid show failed midway through the showing. The next day, during Dead Dog, the concomm committed to a) finding out what happened and b) getting the second DVD replicated so that we could distribute the entire set.

Last week, I got in touch with my contact at the duplication service we use and let him know what happened. He in turn kicked it over to the duplication department. The person over there ran through one of the sets of DVD masters we sent (we send two) and found the glitch in the recording. After visually inspecting both master sets, she found a scratch on the second disc of the first master. The backup seemed to be fine.

I asked for a single copy to be burned from the backup just to ensure a clean run. Unfortunately, that's where things got hinky. Suddenly there was talk of music rights and licensing - *headdesk* - which had never been a part of the conversation before. At which point, I flat out asked for the masters back if it was all going to be a problem. Fast forward to the next day, after an email to my main contact, I got a call from the duplication department - they did burn a copy of the back up and it ran through clean.

In the end, I decided to get the masters and single burned copy back from the service after an unsatisfying e-mail from my contact detailing how we could get the discs run again. I'm saddened by this development only because this particular company had done a good job for us for the past three years.

However, all this means is that we'll now begin to look for another duplicator to re-run disc #2. When we have a working solution, we'll let everyone know.

NOTE: I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Brad Harper, our vidshow coordinator and Morgan Dawn, our former vidshow coordinator, who've been providing stellar support throughout all of this, in addition to a number of other folks, including contributing vidders, who've offered words of encouragement.

Thanks to everyone who attended the Darkfic panel at BASCon.

I have just too many dark fic recs to list (and you love that about me!), so here is a link to my SPN dark favorites memories in my LJ:

And don’t forget to check out the Darkfanfic LJ, started about 3 years ago after a Darkfic panel at BASCon. Darkfic recs for all fandoms.

Thanks to everyone who attended the SPN RPS panel. As stated, our motto is "Supernatural, the fandom where RPS is the high moral ground!"

Days in Our Lives
verse – J2 AU CRACK – VeryToppy!Jared and VerySubby!Jensen soap opera fic where both boys are porn stars and being interviewed about their lives. This series is loads of fun, buckets of hot, and heaps of angst, but in need of a thorough beta. And don't expect anything close to the reality of filming porn (they have their own trailers!) or easily recognizable portrayals of the boys (Jensen is way too fragile), but to make up for that there are some of the hottest sex scenes EVER in RPS fic. My personal fav is the medical scene "A Very Thorough Checkup." God, I am fanning myself just thinking about it again - medical! fetish! kink! All the Days in Our Lives fics have now been consolidated into this LJ, and be sure to go back several pages to start at the beginning of this long enjoyable series:

More stuff I vaguely recall promising to post.
My notes on what is what are not clear, though. )
That's all I have in my lynx links file, so I'm sure there are more I haven't gotten around to finding yet.

10 November 2008 @ 04:21 pm
Since there wasn't one already (and because I'm home sick with nothing better to do than look this stuff up and, of course, read it), here's a sort of master post for the SPN RPS panel.  I miraculously managed to find everything I had notes on, but if I missed something, please feel free to let me know since that means my notes are incomplete, which makes me sad.  I'm actually using this post as my own starter kit since I haven't read much in this particular fandom (due solely to my own real life getting in the way) but am very much interested in it.

And, dude, I found a *lot*. )

For the person who asked me for the picture of John Sheppard that is on my laptop background.... Here it is. I am sorry for forgetting your name, I am rather horrible with them!

Just wanted to know if anyone was looking for anything in particular in the Dealer's room this year. I'd like to get as many custom items done before the con as possible, so if you are looking for any fandoms or pairings or actors in particular, please let me know!

If you just have a general request ("I'd like to see some stuff with {insert names}") you're not obligated to buy anything, I just want an idea of what people want. Also want to make sure I have some JPEGS on hand! Someone ALWAYS wants somebody I have no pics of, so I'd like to have 'em before I get there! :)

I'll also be collecting room freebies for homeless shelters again, and you get a raffle entry for each time you donate, so don't forget to bring any goodies you have at home! That gets you an extra entry!

See ya all in a few days!
