Other People’s Treasures-Other People's Treasures (OPT) morphed out of what used to be called the Orphan Zine Table, which was a place for publishers to sell their zines at a convention without actually attending the con. Getting bored with your old fandom collection? Feeling the lack of storage space? Let the Other People's Treasures table be the answer. We'll display and sell fandom-related items (zines, photos, original art, etc.) for you. Fill out an OPT Control Sheet and label your zines and paraphernalia appropriately and send it to Debbie (OPT@BASCon.org), or drop off the Sheet(s) with your items at the Con. Questions? Email Debbie!
Charities-Once again, our charity monies will be directed to Breast Cancer Action (BCA) and Project Open Hand. Because of the generosity of our membership, we were able to make very nice donations to both organizations and would love to do the same this year. For more information, go to the BASCon website and hit the Charities Button. If you have any further questions about the charities, contact Jackie at charities@bascon.org
Zine Library: Always looking for more donations! Please contact Debbie at Dealer@bascon.org.
Friday Night Mixer: Come meet your fellow con-goers on Friday night at 7 pm. Come have fun, partake of delicious snacks, have your fortune told and kick up your heels!
Programming: Ready, set, go! Plenty of surprises for all of you in the panels we have! Please be sure to read your BASCon Program Book to know what rooms we will be using at the new hotel.
We have a lot of interesting panels this year that we hope you'll enjoy. Among some of this year's selections: Religion and Slash, Writer's Block, Purple Prose, Universe Building and the Psychology of Kink. We'll also have panels focusing on shows both new and old such as House, Eureka, NCIS and Pros. There's a little something for everyone! If you're participating in NaNoWriMo, there will be some focused time for you to hunker with your fellow writers and make your word count. Yarn focused fen can bring and work on their current project during our knitting/crocheting/''whatever floats your boat' yarn gathering (aka - "I Haz Yarn, Let Me Show You It!")
Room Parties: Do you want to pimp your fandom du jour? Are you fond of a not-very-popular pairing? Are you in a fandom with a few other discerning fans? Are you bummed that there’s no panel discussion scheduled for the one subject you’re just itching to discuss?
Host a room party!
Your room at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Burlingame is perfect for room parties – per the marketing blurb,- “our beautifully appointed suites come with a private bedroom and spacious living room with a sofa bed and are fully equipped with two televisions, a refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee maker, two telephones with data ports, and a well lit dining/work table.”
This year, space is a little tighter at our con hotel, and there are not as many (if any) slots available for DIY panels. Again – host a room party!
If you haven’t already, join our list at bascon@yahoogroups.com and send out a notice to see if anyone else is like-minded. Or pimp away at our LJ at bascon@livejournal.com !
Get more use out of your room than just sleeping!
Art Show- Are you an artist looking for somewhere to display your wares? Do you know an artist that wants to sell fan-related artwork or crafts? We’d be delighted to give you some space in our Art Show! Do you have artwork that you have fallen slightly out of love with but is still in good shape? Think of our Art Show! We will take it lovingly and hopefully find it a new home. We take original art, prints, jewelry, sculpture, crafts that have a fandom-based theme. Questions? Contact Liz at artshow@bascon.org
Here are some of the artists we will be spotlighting for your visual pleasure this year:
Suzan Lovett
Jane Mailander
Ramon
Gayle Feyrer
Nik Sanders
Lorraine Brevig
Jim and Melody Rondeau
Music Vid Show- Morgan Dawn is at the helm as our Vid Show coordinator and promises great new vids for all of you. Please plan to attend and after the show, the DVD will be available to be purchased at $15.00.
Volunteers-As always we'll need volunteers for the following during the con (in addition to anything else that might come up):
Dealer refreshment runs
Pre-con bag stuffing
Room set-up (for vid show)
Hospitality Suite monitoring
If you're interested, you can contact Doug (volunteers@bascon.org) before the con. Not sure what you want to do or when beforehand? You can still participate when you get to the con. Volunteers get a hearty thank you and a $5.00 discount off of the next year's registration.
