Long Odds, But Not Impossible
Q. What are the chances that, in the same lifetime, one person could have not one, but TWO, crabby-old-lady-on-a-walker-neighbors with aggressive, insanely-barking German Shepherds??????????????????

A. Obviously greater than I assumed, as it has happened to me. Another old witch has moved in down the street with a dog that barks at the drop of a hat, or the wind blowing, or a feather falling in a house 200 yards away! And it's another German shepherd! And another "outdoor" pet.

I give up.

I think the odds are good. Come to my town and observe the legions of neighborhood barkers.

The problem with this nuisance is that there is no one to enforce it. AC says, "Call the police about noise complaint". Police will visit, but not prosecute until the neighbor makes a formal complaint. I'm not going there.

How about noise citations? The kids get them with their boom boom cars? Clubs and bars get them. Even motorcycle riders get them. So why not dog owners?

Yesterday I went to town and found a pair of poodles tied up to the store front. They were barking wildly. Someone has some nerve, tieing those mutts up alone.

I hear you. We had two barking dog owners who also were breaking laws about parking trailers on the street year round (where they couldn't see them, but we had to look at them every day). In addition to nailing the neighbor about their dogs, we also had to do extensive research to find the exact city ordinance they were violating before CHP would ticket them. Keep in mind WE had to do the research, the CHP claimed they knew of no such ordinance. They demanded we find proof in writing that one existed, (made no effort to help at all), even though a child was hit by a car, due in large part to the limited visibility the trailers created. Despite the fact that the noise and trailers made them mad, I got no support from other neighbors, and went it alone on both issues. I found it. The street is now safer and more attractive, and the dog noise was gone (until the German shepherds arrived), but I sometimes wonder if the present hostility was worth it.

I also think the odds are good. Once you have a barking dog problem, it encourages others... why they hell should they control their dogs if others in the neighborhood are out of control? I don't know that it's a conscious effort, it just seems to happen.

I'm really sorry. The big question is... what are you going to do about it?

Thanks. Certainly this is what we have found, too, about all forms of disrespect of community courtesy. In addition to dog barking problems, we also have had skateboard, ATV and firework problems (people using fireworks through July, August and September).

Currently looking into soundproofing windows and a concrete privacy wall.

Old ladies need protection.

I know I am defending the old ladies here, but Pastilla, those old ladies need the dogs for safety issues, isn´t it? What is wrong is that those dogs needed to be trained! So can you ask them to get those dogs trained not to bark randomly? I know what I would do in your case, and that would not involve nice talking, Mister!

A good alarm system is better than a dog.

Nobody pays attention to dogs barking because they bark at everything.

Check out this very site - there are reports of dogs being ignored while terrible things are taking place.

And it's easy to silence a dog. I read reports of it often, where the dog is drugged or shot in robberies or worse crimes.

In our society (America) we like to at least pretend women and men are equal. As a lady myself, trust me, "old ladies" are just as aware as anyone that their dog is driving everyone crazy - that is, after all, why they got it. Don't attribute virtue where none is present. They have the same motivations as the other irresponsible dog owners.
