hi guys..
the post below reminded me of my question but i didnt want to hijack their post.
i bought my boyfriend a breville espresso machine for christmas. its pretty awesome but as there's no magical button that i push that has one shot, or two shots (it has a dial you switch to the right for espresso and to the left to foam le milk) so i was wondering how long i run it for a single and a double?

(this is my first post by the way :) im ellen, i worked in a creperie/cafe for two years and 4 months in a cafe in a uni run by a catering company. only good thing about the latter was the training really!)

Possibly you have the one I have. :) This guy- the Cafe Roma? http://www.brevilleusa.com/products/esp8xl/index.jsp?sku=esp8xl&cID=108&pID=8&pvID=8&pvHide=true

If it is the same one, it should have a few different filters- single shot, double, pod, etc. The way I started figuring out how to run my shots is I bought the little bar kit we have at Starbucks(the steaming pitcher, the scoop/spoon, thermometer and 2 shot glasses). The shot glasses are measured for one ounce, so I run my machine until the espresso has filled to that 1 oz. line. Sadly I have never had time to time the shots as I make my lattes and doppios in the morning and am not awake, but one of these days I'll try it. Oh and don't forget- you should always steam the milk BEFORE you pour the shots. :)

A single shot is one ounce, a double is two. The amount of time it takes is controlled by the grind and the tamping, not by how long you hold the switch. 15 or 20 seconds is good but experiment to find what you like.
