baristas

[babyxoxo]
i believe that today i got the award for the most messes made in one day.

it was like 5:15am and i went back to put prep away in the fridge. it was really full so my shift had two cubes of CBB sitting on the floor. well me, being so clever, flung the fridge door open and spilled both CBBs all over the floor. it took me like 20 minutes to mop up.

later in my shift, around 9:30am or so, my manager was DTO and i was DB. he said "you're going to need venti soy" and i said "i have it right here" and as i reached for my steaming soy pitcher, i knock it over and it splatters everywhere on my manager and on me. umm yeah.

that's besides knocking over cups and lids and such.

fun day.

So after a lot of thought, swallowing my pride and dismay, I am a barista again (after only about a month, if that). Starbucks has like a magnetic grip on me or something. Anyways, I decided that 1st of all, I dont hate the job, I love my coworkers and most customers at my store and the only reason I quit was because I was so frustrated with the manager. So since Im kinda stretched for money and I knew that they would want me back I asked if they would take me back, they dont even have to do any extra paperwork because he never even took me out of the system so essentially it just looks like I was on leave for about a month. So, maybe this time I can come to some kind of agreement with the manager and maybe things will get better with Howard Schultz in the driver seat. *shrug*  Plus the money is comparitively good and I didnt know that he had put in my raise right before I left.  I actually didnt ask the manager myself, I spoke to the assistant manager because he is awesome and he asked for me and he said they would probably want me back after losing some other good people.

So I was in drive-thru today and this girl came through and ordered her drink from another partner.

Expiditor (E):  Can I get you a pastry to go with that?
Space Cadet (SC):  What kind of pastries do you have?
E: We have a lot we have *blah blah blah*
SC: A cheese danish, what kind is it?
E: Uh...it's cheese.
SC: Well what's in it?
E: Well it's cheese so it has a cream cheese filling in the center.
SC: Ok that sounds good.  I'll have that.
E: Ok.  Your totals $***

My fellow partner looks at me "It's a cheese danish, so it has cheese, duh."

I've been having a rough transition back into my store after a ten day vacation. Our old store manager left while I was on vacation, and everyone else has had time to work with the new manager. I'm still figuring out her working style (but I think I am in SBUX love with her already). Today was an absolute blast on the floor, and I think this exchange tops my "All Time Favorite Ridiculous Things I've Gotten Away with Saying Because it Makes Sense in Context" list:

ME: Expediting
Customer 1: BF Ham
Customer 2: Sausage

ME: I've got a Black Forest Ham sandwich ready at the bar!
Customer 2: *wearing headphones* *reaches*
Barista of Awesome: Oh, wait, yours wasn't the Ham, was it?
Customer 1: Nope, that was me!
Customers: *do a switcheroo*
ME: I'll have your sandwich out in a jiff.
Customer 2: *nods*
Oven: *convects*
ME: Now I've got your Sausage!
Customer 2: *boggle*
ME: *boggle* Did I just say that out loud?
Customer: Yeah. Uhm. Have a nice day?
ME: You, too!

Returning to the fold [Jan. 15th, 2008|07:18 pm]

After nearly two years away from the Bucks, I'm thinking of going back (oh, the siren's song that is heath insurance). Unfortunately, my beloved former manager has moved to a store about two hours away from me and I can't imagine working at my old store without her. So, does anyone have recommendations of good stores in Northern Virginia that are looking for baristas or shifts? Any "other Starbucks" that I should try to avoid?

Thanks in advance!

The other day a woman brought a one pound bag of Espresso Roast up to me at the counter and ordered a drink, I asked her if she needed her beans ground, she declined, and I gave her the total...she then asked me if "this" (holding up the bag of coffee) was the espresso roast.

Also...yesterday a gentleman came up and very confidently ordered a "Tall Ti Chi Latte". I bit my tongue, called a Tall Chai to the barista, and took his money. After he left the other girls I was working with said, "Did he just order a Ti Chi Latte?" after which, we all giggled like crazy women.

Last night it was really slow and my coworker and I were pretty bored so we started throwing stuff together.

We ended up making this smoothie that was half strawberry goop, half passion tea and a little bit of melon (we had already taken out the squirters, so I'm not sure if it was one pump or two in a tall) and it was really good. I work in a B&N cafe so we called over some of the booksellers to try it and they all liked it too! It was really exciting, you guys should try it.

We also put Toffee Nut with Caramel and it tasted like a certain candy that I can't pinpoint. We just mixed it with milk so it was pretty much way too sweet but next time I'm in I'm going to make a latte or coffee based frappuccino out of it to see how that tastes.

Oh and I have spread the Cap'n Crunch Frap love around my cafe!! I added scoops of chocolate(y) chips which I think gives it just the right amount of cereal-esque texture! XD
