so i had a guy come in, order his drinks, and i upsold by convincing him to purchase syrup bottles. he chose the juicy raspberry and the SF mocha. after ringing him up and swiping his card, i handed him his reciept and he commented that i mischarged him,and forgot something. i looked at the reciept to see that next to the SF mocha, it siad NC. no charge for the sfm? hmm. so i went to ask my manager, and she siad she thought we could sell it but apparently we cant.
i went back to the customer, and apologized and explained it was a new product and it wasnt in our system to be sold yet.
he got mad at ME because he was honest for noticing the wrong price he was charged. he kept saying i should give it to him anyways, ring up another syrup for the same price, and complaining that he shouldnt have been honest and should have just taken the bottle. in between each of his comments i apologized that i couldnt give it to him, and suggested next time he goes into a starbucks, ask the barista on register if it is in the system yet to be sold. he mumbled that he was dissapointed because he wanted to buy it NOW not later.

ughh RUDE ASSHOLEEEE

it seems the customers at my store, especially those in drive-thru, are making a big joke out of the whole skinny thing and ordering their drinks "fat." anybody who got nonfat drinks in the first place seems to think it's brilliant, however.

also, there was a guy in the cafe today with the most perfect handlebar mustahce. it was hot.

today we did a french press of Sidamo and paired it with the new Cherry-Lemon Coffee Cake. DELICIOUS!
the cherry-lemon is definitely of my one of my favorites now... so tasty.

also, we had a couple people go for the "skinny" beverages.
it went alright, no confusion or anything on the customers' parts, just curiosity ("What exactly is a 'skinny' drink?" "Do they taste good?"), which i suppose is a good thing... as opposed to people just ordering and then complaining that it's not what they thought it would be. i'm still not so keen on calling them "skinny", as an SS and i were discussing today, but i think after a little getting used to, the platform won't be all too bad. it just feels very unnatural for the time being. oh well.

oh, and random sort of:
my best friend and i went on a roadtrip yesterday to upstate NY. he's a partner too, just at a different store. on the way up the highway, we stopped at a "licensed" Starbucks at a rest-stop. two words: TWILIGHT ZONE.

Question. [Jan. 4th, 2008|12:54 pm]

To all of you who work at DT stores, how do you greet customers when they drive up? Usually I just say something along the lines of "Hello, welcome to Starbucks. What can I get started for you this (morning|afternoon|evening}?" That seems to work well enough, and I can usually get some good suggestive selling going on during the conversation that ensues.

However, one of my shifts has taken to putting a little piece of paper on the DTR screen that instructs us to greet customers like this: "Hello, my name is (insert name). Would you like to try our (insert promotional beverage)?" That makes me feel kinda like I'm jumping on them the minute we meet, not giving them any time to get comfortable.

What do you all think, and how do you all greet customers in DT?

Skinny [Jan. 4th, 2008|02:49 pm]

[uttersimplicity]
The first person to ask me for a skinny drink today placed his order as follows:

Customer: I'll have a grande skinny white mocha.

Me: Sure, but it won't be skinny because we don't have white chocolate in sugar-free, but I can make it non-fat, no whip for you!

Customer: *blank stare*

Me: Starbucks just rolled out our new skinny platform for drinks that are nonfat, sugar-free, and without whip. Would you like your WM nonfat and no whip?

Customer: No, can I have it with soy, but no whip?

*HeadCounter*

This conversation happened during peak period with a line. How is this supposed to be any easier on anyone?

I'm just gonna reiterate and say it... the skinny platform is the DUMBEST thing starbucks could have done, especially considering our already lowering customer counts and stocks.

If this continues through the next phase drinks I might have to punch someone at corporate in the face.

rejoining starbucks [Jan. 4th, 2008|05:29 pm]

[naut_nautical]
hey all. i've followed this community for a while but never actually posted. i worked at starbucks my senior year in high school and the summer after i graduated. i have an interview at a licensed store on my campus once i head back there for spring semester. in any case, i guess they're pretty desperate because the woman doing the hiring told me that i pretty much already have the job due to my previous work experience. anyways, seeing as i haven't been behind the counter since august of 2006, i'm nervous to start again because i don't remember everything. do you think i'll have to go through training again? i don't really mind if i do, but i was just curious. i'm also nervous because i was pretty much always a closer at my old store and it wasn't really busy. now i'll be working at a location that almost constantly has lines out the door... i guess i just need reassurance haha. do any of you work at a store on a school campus? thanks for any and all responses!

Dress code [Jan. 4th, 2008|06:22 pm]

[aeolian_harp]
YES, I got the Starbucks job!

Now a question about the dress code: exactly how strict is Starbucks about the collared shirts? I've seen a lot of shirts I like but I'm not sure if they want totally traditional or if I can possibly go with something that is a black collared shirt but also has some ruffles down the front. And does sleeve length make any difference? Long-sleeved, short-sleeved, 3/4 length? Thanks!

I almost puked when I tried it. [Jan. 4th, 2008|06:26 pm]

Am I the only one who thinks the new cherry-lemon coffee cake is DISGUSTING?

My co-workers and I tried it yesterday and we all had to drink water because the nasty, puke-like after taste wouldn't go away.

So the heavens are very unhappy with us over here in the California bay area, lots of rain, wind and power outages. This means that it was really slow all morning, but I still got to have the most awesome guy ever.

He comes in and is obviously sick, sniffling, coughing, sneezing, the works. I'm over on bar making drinks and I make his drink and hand it off. He sneezes into his hands (becomes important later, I swear) picks up his drink and walks over to the condiment bar.

I'm chatting with a regular at the handoff plane when suddenly he's back. He reaches over the plexiglass partition and paws all of my drink lids before snatching one after knocking some more over.

What? What?! A. the partition is there for a bloody reason and we wash our hands five million times for a reason B. You're obviously sick and yet somehow you thought it was a good idea to touch lids that could possibly go onto other people's drinks.

I ended up having to throw away about a third of the lids that were out, just to be safe, and then taking the plexis in back to be sanitzed.

Ugh.

What is it with people not knowing how to respect the invisable boundary between the area for customers and the area for partners. I've had people contort and stretch so they can fill up their own water bottles, open our food fridge to see what breakfast sandwiches we have, try to grind their own coffee, everything.

Sugar free mocha tan [Jan. 4th, 2008|10:11 pm]

[rotten_shot]
So, I accidentally splashed SFM on my hand and washed it off immediately. It left a brownish stain on my skin, that wasn't too unnatural looking, so I thought that in an effort to find a good use for it, I'd see how it worked as a self tanner on my arm. Suprisingly and thankfully the effect wasn't all that bizzare. It may be the best use for it yet, as consuming it is out of the question. I  still don't know if  I'd use it on my skin again though. Tanning sprays probably have less fake crap in them...
