customers on the verge of tears? [May. 9th, 2008|12:12 pm]

starloree
what do you guys do when you have a customer, not to mention a regular, on the verge of tears? see, i worked yesterday, and we have a regular whom none of us likes all that much, she's a decent person, friendly, but annoying and too talkative sometimes. i think out of all of us, i like her the most, though not as much as my other regulars. anyways, yesterday she came through drive through, and i took her money at the window and noticed she was kind of quiet and straight faced, no smile. i said, "is everything okay?" and she just shook her head no and looked on the verge of tears! i wanted to cry myself, because i know exactly what she was feeling right then, that if she opened up her mouth to talk, the tears would come pouring out. so i didn't ask her anything more....but my heart was in pain because i wanted to do SOMETHING! i started thinking of things to write on her sleeve...but couldn't think of anything, then i started writing the "t" for the line "things will get better" but then i noticed her drink was ready and soemone was gonna pass it out. i stopped what i was doing and went to pass it out to her...having done nothing to try to brighten her day a little. i told her that i hope everything gets better....or something to that effect, and she nodded and drove off.

gosh.....it's like, i feel awkward, cause i don't want to pry when i see her next, but i'm normally not one to ignore things, pretend they didn't happen. but whatever it is, i hope she's better.

what are your stories?

[Current Mood | worried]

A couple days ago I was looking at the schedule, and noticed that a barista was leaving her shift two hours early today because of another job, which would have left one of the shifts (though it wasn't HIS shift, it was the SM's) and the SM alone for 2 hours.

I asked my SM if he would like me to come in for a couple hours to help him out (so he could at least do the deposit without leaving the shift alone), and he kept asking me to make sure, "You want to come in for 2 hours?" And I was like, "Yeah, sure, whatever, I need the hours," blah blah blah. So he said, "Okay, if you want to come at 9:30 we can send J home a little early." So I was supposed to work 9:30am-noon.

Fast forward to yesterday, I COMPLETELY forgot about it, and of course was not thinking about it at all when I went to bed at 5am after being out last night. I woke up this morning and magically remembered. It's 11am. I turned my phone on and there's no voicemail from my SM wondering where I am. I don't think he ever wrote me on the schedule. Does this count as a no call/no show? What should I do??

say someone orders a peppermint mocha or something similar.  would you put equal parts mocha and peppermint? or half and half? or what?  I've been wondering this for a while and I never really knew what to do.

Thanks.

Poor Papa John's Employees [May. 9th, 2008|08:15 am]

arekuchan
So, who else feels bad for Ohio Papa John's employees?

The scoop: Someone called LeBron James, of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team, a crybaby. He once got weepy and whiny about some hard foul in some game. I don't follow NBA politics, so that's what I know of the backstory. At a later game, Papa John's had t-shirts printed out with James' number 23, and "CRYBABY" with their logo, to josh on LeBron James... It's been a small controversy here in the state, and yesterday every PJ's in Cleveland, Youngstown, Toledo, and Columbus sold large one-topping pizzas for 23 cents in repentance.

Now as an hourly food service employee, I'm more outraged to hear that they've done this to their EMPLOYEES than I ever was about the taunting shirts. Lines formed outside PJ locations at 9 AM, with people waiting hours for 23 cent pizzas all day. By 7:00 PM, most stores in here in Columbus were closed because they had run out of ingredients. What kind of hell was that for their hourly employees?! If Starbucks ever did something to royally eff up like this, and made the decision to pass the suffering onto their baristas, I think I'd be livid, and I'd probably quit.

I did not envy Papa John's employees yesterday. Any thoughts from my fellow hourly drones?

Employees in Germany? [May. 9th, 2008|02:00 pm]

Hey

I was just wondering if anyone in this community happens to work at either store in Freiburg, Germany? Because seriously - both stores ROCK. I leave Freiburg in 3 weeks (after being here for a little over a year), and although we definitely have Starbucks back home, I'm going to miss the stores and partners so, so much. When I needed an escape, or a little getaway - Starbucks has happily provided it and I don't think I would have managed this past year without it.

That's all :)

Today was "special."

I opened this morning only to find that our brewer was broken. The water wasn't hot enough to brew anything (it was a mere 95*) so we had no coffee. Ha ha, very funny. We did get permission from our service tech to steam water to make hot americanos (I had thought steaming water was a no-no, but she said it was all right-- good thing, because otherwise we would only have been able to make lukewarm americanos.)

We put signs up. A number of people actually noticed, read and comprehended the signs. Yay! A bunch of people completely breezed by the signs, of course... you know how it goes. :/ Many of those with reading comprehension turned away at the door. Still more left once they got to the register.

So I called our sister store (where I used to work) to let them know they might have an extra morning rush heading their way. Turns out they did have a hell of a morning (I ended up speaking to them several times, for various reasons). Apparently they really appreciated the heads up, because I later got a call from our DM thanking me for my thoughtfulness. asldkfjasdl awww :D

anyway, our amazing service tech showed up and saved our asses, and all was well. I need to make her a little red superhero cape. :)

Moral of the story: I'm REALLY GLAD I brewed coffee at home before work today!!

F'n Crazy [May. 8th, 2008|07:58 pm]

So, this is the first time I've ever encountered this lady.  I've been a shift for a month at my store and I'm lovin' it, most of the time :)

So, crazy lady.  Big white bow in her hair.  British accent.  My partner G, sweet girl, rings her up for a tall iced coffee.

CL:  I'd like extra ice.
G:  Okay, would you like me to put it in a grande cup for you?
CL:  No, a tall cup.  That's what I asked for.  (snidely)
G:  Okay, no problem.  (shrugs it off)  Well, have a nice day!
CL:  Have a nice future.
G:  I hope so.
CL:  Well, I don't.

WTF?!  Not one reason for this woman to say this at all!

THEN, she comes back for a refill!

CL:  I'd like a refill.
G:  Okay.
(G making conversation):  So, do you work upstairs?  (we work in the midst of many other businesses on a busy street)
CL:  God works upstairs.
G:  (quietly) Okay...
CL:  That was a rather stupid question if you don't mind my saying so.
G:  Oh, well, I'm sorry.
CL:  Yes, you will be.

I reported that right to my manager after that, and my manager knew exactly who I was talking about and said, "Yeah, she's quite insane."  Sadly, G told me about the second conversation after the fact so I couldn't get to the woman.  If she had come back again and said anything else she was getting kicked the F out.  I was livid.  Why do people do this?  God forbid coffee shops and all hourly paid partners and employees just vanished and no one had their precious caffeine fix.

Ranting/Barista being a jerkface/Me being a jerkface [May. 8th, 2008|10:42 am]

elegancewaves
So anyone remember the post I made a few days ago, where a girl called in sick on Saturday after a night of drinking and I had to cancel plans to come in early, and she got mad at me because I confronted her?

Well anyway, she's still mad, because I refuse to apologize for something when I didn't do anything wrong. I know, we're both being entirely immature, but seriously this girl needs to learn she can't get away with everything because thats how people have been letting it slide. She's been on her "last string" with my SM and DM for at least a year now, and she calls in sick at least once a week, and still nothing's happening.

So comes Tuesday night. I'm the closing supervisor, and she's one of three other baristas closing with me. She refused to speak to me at all, and when she did, it was a grunt to acknowledge that she heard what I said. I stuck her on R1, because nobody ever puts her there because they don't want to hear her complaining, and so I figure since I don't CARE if she complains, she can have fun doing it. Everyone hates R1, and I mean everyone, so every night with every supervisor its usually a quest of determining which partner will complain about it less. She loathes it more than anyone, so she actually asked me "Will I be on R1 ALL night?" to which I said "If it says R1 then one can most definately assume you will be, yes." And then she resumed not talking/grunting.

And if that wasn't enough, she asked everyone else for orders except me. And barely listened to me at all when I gave them. At close when I needed to cash out the extra till (our night people don't have a specific till, the left register is closed after the morning shift goes home at 4:30 pm and the right one just stays open), she had unrolled all the coin... So I had to count it all. Sucks for her though because the closing tasks were already mostly done so she had to wait around until I finished counting.

The height of our feud though, happened around 9 pm when we started sanitizing everything. She was in the back by the sink and I went in the back and this is how the conversation went:

She's speaking in a raised voice, practically yelling, and I'm mostly quiet but still with a tone until near the end where I do yell.

Me: When you're finished back here can you clean the bathrooms?
Her: Can't you see I'm busy?
Me: Doing WHAT?
Her: Cleaning!
Me: Yeah well, you can finish it after, what the hell's your problem?
Her: You, obviously.
Me: Yeah well, its not my fault you went drinking and called in sick so get over it. (I turned to walk away at this point, where she yells something I didn't catch because by  then I just tuned her out, it was something whiney about the actual calling in, but while she was in mid-sentence I spun around and shouted "MUFFIN!" and kept walking.)

Anyway, she got to bathrooms pretty quick after that, and thats all I care about. I WANTED to send her home, but then I'd be down a closer, and I'd feel bad because I participated I guess.

I know the whole thing's really immature and we're both being assholes, but honestly, her attitude towards people needs to stop and her complete lack of regard for work and the people at work also needs to stop. She needs to stop lying to my face, for one. She's still adamant about being actually sick. And she probably was, but she still went out drinking, and therefore still could have come in to work. Her friends came in on Saturday and ratted her out anyway, another shift was the witness to that one, so whatever. She can say what she wants. My SM says she's going to fire her when she gets some more people hired (although we'll see if that actually happens), and I have permission to keep her on R1 whenever she's on my supervising shift, so thats one less position I have to hear griping about.

I love working at a non-dt store. We actually got out on time, it was amazing. I like being able to only have to make 1 cube of cbb and coffee base instead of 5 of each, and that we can actually get our closing duties done without having the dt beep in your ear every five minutes and there are only 3 mats to clean as opposed to 9 in my old store and the store closes at 9:30 as opposed to 10 so I can actually go home and sleep before I have to wake up early the next morning for my day job.

what?! [May. 8th, 2008|10:09 am]

I'm a student. I am available Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. I do not go into my store from Monday-Wednesday (or Friday). I asked for less hours to study for exams (specifically one day a week). My manager scheduled me for Sunday only this week. Grand.

So sometime between Monday morning and Wednesday night, he added me to work today (Thursday). And didn't call me. Just assumed that the information would magically pop into my brain.

My store has just left a message on my phone that I'm a no call no show. And that I need to come in NOW.

Okay, no. Just. No. I would have happily come in if you had called me last night and said "Will you work tomorrow?". But you didn't. I had no idea I was scheduled. And now I'm sitting peacefully in the library with a pile of books and my lecture notes. So no.

Grr. I just hope I don't get fired for this rubbish!

So I've never actually owned a coffeemaker of my own before but I am thinking about getting a french press(yay!) because I've become so addicted to the stuff from working here for two years, ha!

Anyway, I can't imagine that I would use up an entire bag of starbucks coffee in just a week or however long you're supposed to use it in after you open it, especially since I doubt my roommates would want any of it. My question is:

1]Are there bags smaller than the 1lb ones that are available? Espresso roast is my favorite.

OR

2] Would a bag last longer if I kept it in a sealed container, like a Folger's can(lol, irony) or something? If so, how long?

Today was trying. My store is down to five employees plus the manager. And we're all sick. I think we've officially hit a state of emergency. Our DM is actually going to come in and cover some shifts so my manager can set up a job fair and he can have a day off. He's new, so this isn't his fault. He just came at a bad time.

I'm on register because I've got a fever and I'm barely above a whisper. Our healthy partner is making drinks like a champ. It's just the two of us, just like every day now.

All was well until I had a difficult customer. She's normally not difficult, but today she was pressing my buttons. I had the nutritional guides out, looking up every spec on every drink that she didn't know how to order, while we had a line out the door and I was the only lane open.

First, it was a skinny "coffee moker", which I heard as SKM. That wasn't it. Then I looked up Cafe Mocha, since my southern ears will likely never get used to the Downeast (Maine) accent. No, she wanted a "coffee moker... made with extra skinny, no whip... iced!" Finally, I managed to figure out that she wanted a MFL. Of course.

I get her the information. Her friend, who is finishing a cell phone conversation turns to her and says, "Now, I thought you kept one of those nutrition things with you! What are you having her look up?"

She replies, "Oh. I do have one, but it's in my purse." Of course.

Yes, the purse she was carrying on her arm, while she was waiting in line, while she was ordering, while I was looking up all this information. Her copy was right there. She watched me hunt for that book (which wasn't where we normally keep it) and look for three different things that she didn't know the names of. I wanted to cry because the customers behind her are starting to get angry at us both.

As the icing on the cake, she has me look up her balance on her Starbucks card, and says that she wants me to reload $40 on it. Okay, no problem. I do this and tell her that her total is $40-something dollars. She sighs and says, "NO. I wanted my TOTAL to be an EVEN forty dollars. This is ridiculous."

Of course it is.

I did the math in my pounding head, and made it come out to a perfect $40. With a smile and a flourish, I hand her the receipt saying, "Ta-daaaaaah!!!!"

She didn't want the receipt, of course. At least the next customer laughed when I squeaked, "Help me!" after that woman left.

Man, it was just one of those days.

Inconsiderate customers [May. 7th, 2008|12:24 pm]

[Current Mood | calm]
[Current Music |Tori Amos - Siren]

Has anyone ever been bothered by a customer while they weren't working (whether before/after work or on a break)? When I went on my half the other day, the first thing I did was go to the bathroom. When I came out, a woman was standing there. She looked at me and immediately said loudly, "YOU WORK HERE, RIGHT?"

Uh, yes. I do work here. I also don't have an apron on, have my bag over my shoulder, have a sweatshirt on, and am in the process of pulling my cell phone out of my pocket. Do I look like I'm on the clock? Don't I look like... oh, I don't know... like I'm about to leave?

Apparently not. Once I replied in the affirmative, she accosted me with tons of questions about the music we have for sale and the music that was playing. I couldn't get away. I suppose I could've told her I was on my break, but I'm nice to a fault. I couldn't find it in me to tell her to go ask someone else (especially because the store was really busy at the time), and I was afraid she'd get angry if I did. And she was persistent, too. Whenever I said I didn't know the answer to her questions in an attempt to shake her off, she'd push the issue until I went and tried to find out in the back room. She ended up taking five minutes out of my thirty-minute break.

I don't know, it wasn't the biggest deal in the world. But I'm mainly posting this because I think it's another example of how some customers tend to forget we're people (who in this case need to do things like go get lunch and rest), and instead just look at us like we're Starbucks robots.

A semi-related story to go with this: My shift told me that one time, he went on his break and forgot to take off his apron. He was just sitting on one of the couches in the store eating lunch, and the store was fairly slow. Oh well, right? No big deal? Apparently not. Within five minutes, a woman came over to him and asked him for a grande nonfat latte. True story. People are insane.

So I transferred to another store and today is my first day there, Im nervous because I got so used to working at my old store. I'm primarily a closer so I get into a kinda closer groove and I know what needs to be done and what goes where, but this is a completely new store and it will probably throw me off. But I am excited because it's not a drive through store *Thank God*. That's one of the reasons I hated my old store, also because of the manager so I'm hoping my new manager will be better. I'm going to miss working with my dysfunctional partners though at the old store, they made work more interesting and funny, I'm afraid I'm going to say something offensive at my new store because we always tell dirty jokes.

You know what my favorite thing ever is?

Customers who throw their money at you, even after you've been as sweet as possible but you just receive the cold shoulder from them. They just toss it on the counter so the coins fly over the counter and you have to go pick them up... or when you hold out your hand... and they toss it right next to you. WTF.

Sometimes, I wish i could just throw their change right back at em.

WTF I hate people.

Well no, just MOST people.

I've read on here that some of you have had people be condescending when they tip. I've never had anyone show that sort of attitude when I've been on register (lucky?) until today.

Me: Hi, how are you?
Customer Man: Venti coffee
Me: >.< Sure. *grabs coffee* $1.85
CM: *hands me $2* Keep the change.
Me: Thanks a bunch.
CM: Right, that'll get you through college.
Me: *stare* Well I already have my undergrad in Sociology from San Diego State, but I'll put it towards my Masters. *legendary smile*
CM: *defeated* Oh.KTHXBYE.
