Any harpists out there?

I've been primarily a singer, and, I'm just edging a toe into storytelling. However, for as long as I can remember, I've wanted to play the harp.

On one hand, I do not believe in buying a poor instrument (or any tool) just because you're a beginner. It only leads to frustration. On the other hand, it's hard to justify spending a couple thousand dollars on an instrument you're just beginning to play.

I was wondering if anyone here could tell me about the harpsicle. It was recommended here as a good inexpensive option for beginners. I'd also be curious to know what you'd recommend for a beginner... and at what point you'd advise someone to just move on to a more expensive harp. (For example, would I quickly outgrow the harpsicle because it has no levers (though it would certainly be more period for the SCA I would think)?

Thank you for your advice.

If you're going to get there at a different time either respond asking for directions (which Kaya will have to give, or you can get them from the people inside Kripalu because I can't remember exactly where the road is), or make a time and one of us can go up and meet you there.

For directions to kripalu click here.

What to bring:

Blankets, pillows, beanbags, anything that can make you and others comfy and warm. It won't be as cold as our first lake house bardic circle was, but it'll still be nice to get warm in a big pile of people.

Snacks, water, soda, things to share. We'll have a hot plate, for warming up water for tea, cocoa, instant soup things like that. (EDIT) Please, at least bring water for yourself. People will probably share, but no promises.

Musical instruments, peoms, and songs, and games, and anything fun and creative you can think of to share with people.

(EDIT)A candle! We're going to use candle to light the place, and take a bunch and put them in the middle like a improvised camp fire. If you can bring mroe than one candle, great, but try to bring at least one.

A friend! Or two, or three, with bardic circle is almost always good to have lots of people. It makes the games better, and it's more fun to tell stories to a big group.

Yourself, in everything that you are, and with everything you have to give. Don't be ashamed, or shy, because this is one of the few places in this world where you are allowed and incouraged to be yourself, and have fun, even if it seems "childish"

Energy! We like to move around, and get the energy up, and it's always good to have more people with lots of positive energy to help our cause. A good flow of energy can sometimes make people that would normally just be spectators play games with us, and share their songs, and poems. Even just incouraging energy, while being comfy is helpful. Clap, and cheer, and laugh and smile. You don't have to jump around to share your energy. (This might be the most important thing to bring)

So, I hope to see you all there. If you need a ride, or can give a ride please leave a comment with where you'd need to be picked up from, would be willing to go, how many people can fit in your car, etc...

I was thinking that we should wait 'till April for the next Bardic Circle, but then again.....

What about (I know it's not much notice) Saturday the 13th? Wow that's soon.

Saturday, March 13th

Bardic Circle?

I'll go ask for the lakehouse again if there is enough interest. So, ask people, now, or really really close to now, and comment, or call me. I'd need help to do this one, it's too little notice for me to think of all the details.

So let me know, too close to the last one? Too few people available? Too cold?

Or, Jen might come visit, Jen might be there. That would be so awesome. I would really want to start this Bardic Circle with improv games, and Jen could help with that, and I bet she would even sing for us!

So this could be a good thing.

I feel the need to make a post here and rant about the wonderment of bardic circle. This past bardic circle (February 2004) was my very first experience with anything bardic circle or agt like and it was amazing. I had the most wonderful time. I met great people and it felt safe and comfortable and I was aloud to just be without question. ^^ Nervous at first I even managed to get up in front of everyone and read one of my poems and it was okay. ^^ And I danced around and played and loved and it was wonderful. I honestly cannot wait until the next bardic circle and I even told a few friends about it and hope to bring them along. ^^ Thank you Lain for introducing me to this and thank you Lain and Kaya for organizing it. :huggles: ^^ And yeah ... you were all great and yay :huggles:. See ya next time.

=^..^= Insanitie =^..^=

Right in the middle of the Lakehouse... eager bardic circlers all around me. Cards in every hand. I go to speak but first: FOR YOUR INFORMATION!: Its bloody cold in here!

Bardic circle was good and here I am posting about it in this, my very first LJ community post. It was damn cold... my space heater couldn't heat up the large space fast enough so we'll have to put them in there earlier in the day next time. However once we all huddled into the corner and began our readings and such, things were a little better.

so all in all a good time and now I need to go find something else interesting to read at the next one which is... anyone? anyone? comment or post with the date.
