Hey everyone!

This is my first post on this community :) I've visited Barcelona three times and am absolutely in love with the city and Catalunya all round. I'm hopefully visiting again this coming May with friends and I'd love to possibly have new friends to meet when I get there :) So basically, I'm asking for penpals :P Anyone interested, just comment and I'll pass on my address! I'm a 22 year old student living in Liverpool who loves movies, music and football (Barca being my La Liga team!) :P

Jen
:)

hello barcelona types. :)

i'm going to barcelona for three months in early/mid october and i am hoping to find a flat to rent. if you or anyone you know might be looking to rent their place for a few months, this is what i need/want:

- must have reliable internet access. (this is an absolute, as i work from home and with american and european companies, which can lead to meetings at strange hours when cafes are not open yet.) i am willing to pay a little more to be sure i have internet.

- washing machine and decent shower

- preferably some really basic furniture and kitchenware (mostly i just need a bed and a couple pots.)

- would prefer in or around eixample, but am flexible.

everything else is flexible. i'm not really picky with my housing. last summer, i rented a flat for two months in the gothic district, that was up 6 flights of stairs and only had working water about 80% of the time. it also had no a/c, which was kind of insane in the summer, but i lived. this time, i'm shooting for less stairs and more water. ;) i do hear that most of the older places in bcn don't have heat (i've not really been there much when it's colder) so i am a little bit concerned about that, but i'm normally from chicago and sometimes i think my spanish friends' idea of cold is different from mine. (as evidenced by one of them wearing a hoodie constantly while visiting me this august, haha.)

if you know anyone who wants a quiet and responsible tenant in their space for three months (rent up front), please pass them this ad? my email is thaumata@gmail.com. thanks!

Room to rent in Barcelona for June

Hi everyone,

I have been living and working in Barcelona this year, but my contract finishes at the end of May and I have another job back in England which starts in June. So, as the lease on the flat I am in runs til the end of June, I am looking to rent out my room for the month. It would be great for a study break, a holiday, or to use as a base from which to make preparations for a year abroad if you will be an international student here next year.

It's a single room with an interior window, in a flat shared with three other girls (two students and one works here, we are all around 22 years old). It's a friendly and sociable atmosphere, with English, Castilian (Spanish) and French spoken (French is their native language, though I am English, and we usually speak Spanish between ourselves!). You would be welcome to have friends to stay, and to join in with going out for dinner, which usually happens about once a week, if you wanted to.

There are two bathrooms with showers (though one of the showers is very small), a lovely light living room with sofas, DVD player, television a radio, a small balcony, and a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, freezer, oven, toaster, kettle and all cutlery, crockery and implements). There is also a small interior balcony with a washing machine and clothes line. We also have wireless broadband in the flat, and included in the telephone package are a certain number of free minutes (I'm not sure about this as I use skype for calling people but I could find out).

We are in walking distance of the beach (about 10-15 minutes) and the Sagrada Familia, as well as the city centre, though I usually use the metro for that (as I am always running too late for anything else, haha). Our nearest stop is Marina, about a three minute walk from the flat, only three stops from Plaza Cataluna in the centre of town. I have also walked to the Glories shopping centre (one metro stop away), but then I do like walking :) There is a tram stop 2 minutes away and plenty of buses stop round our block. We are virtually next door to Parc Ciutadella which is lovely in the warm weather, and the Parc de l'Estacio del Nord is also very close. The Born district is really close too, which is great for nights out as there are loads of bars and restaurants within a 10-15 minute walk (though taxis are also quite cheap if you overdid the cava or have been out in the city centre :D ). There are 2 grocers right outside the apartment block and 4 supermarkets within 5 minute walk. There is also a Chinese supermarket within a ten minute walk or one stop on the metro.

I can cover the expenses in advance before I leave, so all that would be left would be the rent, which is 285 Euro (less than ten euro a night). If you are interested at all, for the whole month or maybe a couple of weeks, or if you would like any more details, please feel free to ask.

If you are not interested but would just like some general information about the city or living here, I'll try and help you out there too. If you're thinking about a visit but still unsure, I've been here 8 months so far, and I will be looking for another job here in September :) It's a great place.

(xposted a little. Sorry if you see this more than once.)

I travel to BCN a lot for my job, and usually I stay long enough that I sublet a flat for a couple of months. Recently, though, I just had a 2 week stay, and I spent part with friends and part in a hostel. I also had a friend in town who stayed at a different hostel that was quite different from mine, and I thought they both deserve a mention:

http://www.hotel-nilo.com/

Hotel Nilo is a really, really basic spanish pension. The rooms are pretty bare, but they are clean and dirt cheap for everyone on a budget. You can get a room with a toilet in it, but there are toilets and a shower on every floor. It's run by two old spanish men and one british guy. The spaniards can be a little surly sometimes (and don't speak english) but they're nice enough. If you get a single bed here, you can only have YOU staying in it (ie, can't bring back the hottie you met at the bar). If you're planning to pick up a local, you'll need to rent a double bed. :) Generally speaking, though, it was nice, clean and quiet. It's right off ramblas and right between the beach and the gothic district, so it's nice for tourists. :)

My friend that came to visit was hoping to be somewhere a little more lively and got bored with Nilo after two nights. He went here instead:

http://www.gothicpoint.com

This is on the other side of the cathedral from Nilo, but still only a few minutes walk from everything. And actually, BCN is so small it's really silly to worry about things like that. :) Anyway, it's in the center of town and I have to say that it was really a nice hostel. I went to help him check in there and it was bright, cheerful and really full of young backpackers that were eating together at communal tables. This hostel was about the same price as Nilo (around $20 eur a night, give or take) but only has dormitory style rooms (12 people to a room), which is why I didn't stay there. (I was working.. would prefer to sleep in peace.) They seemed to have a lot of group events, though, like a dinner where you'd learn to cook a catalan dish and then all eat together, etc. If I were backpacking and looking to party with other people, I would totally stay here in a heartbeat. It was really fabulous.

I'll have to come back and post more about places I like to eat. :) So many lovely ones to choose from.... ha.

I've been only hearing bad things about Barcelona. It sounds like there is a lot of crime there. People getting mugged outside their taxi, in the subway, etc. I know it mostly happens to tourists...

Barcelona isn't sounding fun anymore. Why am I scared? Should I be worried? Am I over analyzing?

(these words expressed are not my own)

Hello guys and girls!

I will be travelling solo in Spain and staying in Barcelona from 6 to 10 August. Anyone would like to join me in (re)-discovering Barcelona?..
I speak Spanish very little so would be happy to meet for a walk or a cup of coffee with English-speakers! It would be nice to talk and share stories about our travels! :-)

If interested, please drop me a line at karina.chupina(at)gmail.com

PS. Please could anyone suggest best flamenco bars in town? Thanks a lot in advance!

Cheers,
Karina :)

Recently, mi amor booked a vacation for us to Barcelona in the late fall (almost winter, but not quite). I have never been to Barcelona, Spain, or a Spanish-speaking (hispanohablante) country for that matter!! (I know, shocking, isn't it?) Anyway, I'm just probing for information from people who may read my LJ (I know this is a small number) regarding the city, i.e. what they did if they were there, what they liked, what they would recommend, etc. I plan to do some reading on the city (history, etc.) and on Spain in general this weekend. This will likely help me find points of interest I may like to see. :)

-Jason

PS - Gay barrio? lol Are they even called "barrios" there?

x-posted to barcelon
