9/26/08 06:27 pm - [info]pukingtoreador - Icon Challenge

I'm not an artist, or a graphic designer, but I made a few tagline icons with MS paint. The first one is a dumb meme joke about ssbb. The next two are about ssbb's running gag with elves. The Tamari Erin icon is about The Horror from the Deep, a excellent story about a certain tentacled old one. The last one is about The Passion of Saints Tryphaena and Tryphosa by Shukyou is a awesome story about gay saints that manages to sound authethically new testament and sexy at the same time. If you happen to know how to do graphic design and want to use the taglines but with flashes or sparkles or actual pictures, knock yourself out.

Mostly safe for work )

9/13/08 07:06 pm - [info]petronia - Shousetsu Bang*Bang Fanart and Icon Challenge

The next SSBB challenge shines a spotlight on the visual artists and graphic designers among us. ^_^ Again, the idea is pretty straightforward: pick your favorite story from [info]s2b2, draw fanart, post here in [info]bangbangwhimper. You don't have to ask permission: writers can opt out by commenting to this post if they wish, but I've never personally met a writer who wasn't ecstatic to get fanart of their work. *g*

If drawing isn't your forte, you can make icons for your favorite story instead, or general SSBB-related icons for other members to use when posting re: pernicious deadlines and such. XD Perhaps we should have an informal vote on the cleverest tagline? Note that all the icons currently being used by the SSBB journals were kindly created by comm members, so they will definitely come in handy.

You can participate in both challenges. There is no limit to the number of pieces you can create, and no signup.

7/27/08 05:12 am - [info]everapril - What the heck?!

I always feel awkward using the "?!" punctuation (alternatively, "!?".)

Is this proper now? Did they update whatever tome is the definitive source of all American English formatting to include "?!", because it wasn’t considered kosher in my formative years that included sentence structure education.

But then, my mother still insists on having two vertical lines in every dollar sign, two spaces after every period and a comma before "and" in a list despite how I often point out that this is superfluous. I can only imagine arguing with my future children when, after proofreading their homework, I insist that they can’t use "u" as a second person personal pronoun and they will role their eyes and not even bother arguing with me because I am obviously too damn old.

Thoughts?!

7/13/08 05:53 pm - [info]frogs_of_war - A question of idioms

If I wrote 'in the all together' would anyone know what I meant?

The paragraph is:

Watching Nathaniel swim in the all together was going to kill him. And would certainly give him away.

This is something my mother's family says, but when I mentioned the phrase to a friend, she laughed as if she'd never heard it before.

7/9/08 10:30 am - [info]mysticshell - This has never happened to me before!

So, sign-ups went up two days ago, right?

Explain to me how I finished my story yesterday. O_o; I'm usually a down to the wire kind of person, but I just blasted through this one. Obviously it hasn't been betaed yet, and it leaves me plenty of time to forget about it, come back, read it with fresh eyes, and either go, "Damn, this is good," or "WTF was I thinking?" Then, of course, I can send it along to beta readers, assuming it's the former.

Funny thing is, my lovely illustrator has already finished a sketch [and God it's hot]. All it needs is inking and coloring. We're randomly overachievers this time around and neither of us really even LIKES sports!

I'm going to go nuts sitting on this story for two months. =X

6/25/08 10:40 pm - [info]ladysisyphus - Themed Rec List : One-Hit Wonders

HEY THERE WHO'S DONE READING ISSUE 15 ALREADY

*crickets chirp*

...Anyway, I've got a rec list for when you're done with that! And the theme is One-Hit Wonders: stories by authors who arrived, left us a single gem of a story, then vanished as mysteriously as they came.

I chose last December's theme-free issue as the cut-off point for single-submission authors, since I don't want this list to be mostly recent first-time authors who may very likely submit something else in the near future. These stories go back as far as the first issue, and there's been a sufficient enough gap between their being written and the present to believe that their authors may not submit any other stories, and that's a damn shame.

There was an order here. It's gone now.

let's hear it for )

6/18/08 07:04 pm - [info]still_ciircee - Themed Rec-List: Nice Guys Finish First

Hard! There is a reason I don't generally do rec-lists--because I suck at them. But I thought I'd give it a whack--and limit myself to one story per issue and without glomming on to my favorite authors TOO hard.

My theme of 'Nice Guys Finish First' centers on those stories that feature loveable average-joes in day-to-day-life sorts of stories. It also focuses on only the first five issues of Bang*Bang--because I am lazy and about to start re-watching Kamen Rider Kabuto. I think it best I not be distracted while explaining Tendou Souji to my kids. Anyway! All the nice guys are gay AND taken. )

6/16/08 04:20 am - [info]petronia - Shousetsu Bang*Bang Themed Rec List Challenge

Ensuing upon the first remix challenge, we're organizing more reader activities here on [info]bangbangwhimper - basically, in the order of popularity indicated by the readers' poll. Each challenge will last about a month and a half.

The first one is the Themed Rec List Challenge. It's pretty easy: compile a list of story recommendations from the [info]s2b2 archive, and post them here for other readers' perusal. The catch is that the recs must be themed (as you may or may not have guessed XD;). In other words, you can't merely list "my favorite stories from the past three issues", or even "top five stories by my favorite SSBB writer". The idea is to dig a little further into the archives than usual - early back issues, authors who only contributed once or twice, or maybe that one gem you always thought was underrated by the readership, if comment count was any indication.

Examples of possible themes (off the top of my head):
  • angels and demons
  • twisted fairytales
  • warfare in fantasy universes
  • ancient and modern Chinese history
  • pre-WWII boarding school
  • animal transformation
  • not!real people fiction

...And so forth. I was going to draw up an example (something to do with Christian and mythological references) but this entry is getting long, and I suspect everyone already knows what a story rec list looks like. XD So post yours to [info]bangbangwhimper at will. You can post as many lists as you like, and make the recs detailed or brief as you wish; there's no limit, and no signup.

6/2/08 07:38 pm - [info]kubaru_suki - Deadline. ACK.

So, did anybody else look around and realize that the deadline for the next issue is in three days?

Because it totally is.

3/4/08 08:02 pm - [info]ravenqueen55 - Attention authors and artists!

This has been posted in a few places, but I wanted to post it here, too, just to make sure everyone had an opportunity to apply...

Hi! I work for a brand new magazine called 'Yaoi Magazine', and we're currently accepting submissions for our second edition. The first edition sold like crazy, and we have every confidence that the second will sell even more! We'd be thrilled if you were interested in submitting your work for publication consideration...and yes, if your work is chosen, you will be paid!  Please visit our website and follow the submission guidelines listed. http://www.yaoimagazine.com/

Thanks, and good luck!

2/22/08 08:13 pm - [info]kubaru_suki - *facepalm*

So, apparently instead of posting my remixes here I posted them to my default-private journal. And then I went offline for a month because RL tends to blow big monkey chunks (marry an orphan, kids!). So very, very, very late but here are links to my two remixes if anybody wants to read them and if Petronia the Gracious allows them to live.

Remix Title: Wintering [The Fast-Burning Fuel Mix]
Author: Kubaru Suki (少年好き 配る)

and

Remix Title: Emerald Tiger [The Well of Ghosts Concert Mix]
Author: Kubaru Suki (少年好き 配る)
Original Story: Emerald Tiger by Shinju Yuri (真珠百合)

Well of Ghosts Concert Mix.

I'm gonna go apply my head to my desk repeatedly and hope it brings my full mental faculties back online.

ETA: It might help if I unlocked them. *facepalm* *headdesk*

2/15/08 02:43 am - [info]corinthians1313 - n00b question

Hi all. I'm a noob to this community. I came here because I have a friend who writes here and thought the idea sounded fun. But anyhow, paging through the rules I came upon a question. On the part that says happi endo, how stiff of a rule is that? ^^; I wrote something, but it's not ... that happy of an ending. Nobody died, or anything like that. But it's not really kissing and living together forever stuff. It is however perverted and a bit bizarre. Does that still work or do I have to go back and do something happier?

Thanks for the help! Even if my first attempt flops I'll keep on trying.

1/28/08 06:37 pm - [info]poxical - Writing and the avoidance thereof

There are times when I'm sitting at the computer, the cursor blinking on the text document while dictionary.com and its thesaurus are loaded in tabs in the background, and I'm ready to play. It's like standing before an empty soup pot, surrounded by potential ingredients and fired by an appetite.

1/25/08 12:43 am - [info]woodburner - [remix] Red Coat (Red Maiden remix)

Title: Red Coat (Red Maiden remix)
Author: Kagamino Kage (鏡乃影)
Remix of: Red Coat by Roselia Grimm
Notes: (see comments)

In the upper part of the town there is a school where all the girls wear red coats. The coats are made of thick wool, crimson and soft, lined with black satin and fastened with grey steel toggles down the front. The girls of the lower town shuffle and mutter when a girl wearing one of these coats passes by but they don't dare do a thing.

So she's skimming the edges of the upper town, light and careless, almost dancing along the line that divides it from the lower town. Her long coat flutters behind her, around the hem of her pressed and pleated skirt. She watches all the perfumed ladies and well-dressed gentlemen brushing by her, all of them so carefully not looking. They won't look at her because she's looking there, over the border and into lower town. She laughs silently, a ghost among them.

1/21/08 08:22 pm - [info]pukingtoreador - [remix] Sky Castles (Shudders remix)

Title: Sky Castles (Shudders remix)
Author: Usagi Anami (兎あなみ)
Remix of: Sky Castles by Shouga Naiko (生姜ないこ)
Notes: Thanks to Shouga Naiko for throwing open a story so relevant to my interests.

It’s not mind over matter, the Professor says.

Kei feels a trickle down his thigh, and reaches down to find it’s blood. He pulls the covers tighter around his body and listens to the heater click on.

It’s not mind over matter, the Professor says, because the mind is matter. Thoughts and emotions are electrical signals in the mess of gray matter. The dichotomy between mind and matter is false. So is the dichotomy between flesh and spirit.

Kei doesn’t think the Professor really talks to him, or even to himself. Every time afterward, like clockwork, like the voice of a message machine when nobody answers, the Professor mutters the same things.

1/21/08 12:00 am - [info]ladysisyphus - [remix] Wintering (Icarus Ascending remix)

Title: Wintering (Icarus Ascending remix)
Author: shukyou (主教)
Remix of: Wintering, by Koizumi Shinme (恋墨新芽)
Notes: (see end)

It's crazy the things you remember thinking at the time. Like how you hope that letter to your mother doesn't get lost by some psychotic postal worker, because otherwise someone's going to come across your empty bank account and your empty house and think you've been kidnapped by drug dealers, or aliens, or drug-dealing aliens. Like how you've got exactly five changes of underwear in which to find something that puts you at least in striking distance of a washing machine. Like how smart getting a passport three years ago 'just in case' suddenly seems when 'just in case' sends you a postcard from a place you couldn't reliably find on a map except you know it's in the country that's shaped like a boot, halfway on the other side of the world. Like how when the sun comes up in three hours it'll be Palm Sunday, and everyone will get up and go to church, and wave their branches and sing their Hosannas, faces painted only forward on their own tasks, not one turning to catch a glimpse of you as you go.

My stomach lurched as the wheels leapt off the ground with a jerk that said this is your last touch of home, boy, everything from here on out's open water, and I shut my eyes as the plane tilted east, toward the rising sun sleeping just beyond the winedark sea.
