Fraud at Petrol Bunks in Bangalore
Last Saturday (28 Jan 2006), I went to fill fuel in my vehicle, from Vinod Auto Service in Frazer Town, Bangalore. The petrol station is a branded BP outlet.

I asked for Rs. 1,000 worth of petrol. I mentioned this loudly, and clearly twice. Meanwhile, one of the attendants engaged me in a conversation regarding whether I required Speed or Normal petrol, and pointed to a hoarding which mentioned some scheme being run by Standard Chartered Bank. While I was distracted, the other attendant had keyed in Rs. 200 as the amount on the display panel - and had supposedly filled my tank for this amount while I was speaking with his colleague.

When I mentioned that there was no litre reading on the display, he simply said that the petrol had already been filled. This had happened to me once before, and I knew that I'd been duped.

I checked my fuel gauge and realized that only around 15 litres had been filled, instead of 20. I went back after an hour and confronted the manager at the petrol bunk. He appeared angry with the employees who'd done this, and motioned to them to fill the balance amount in my tank; however he didn't seem surprised by the nature of the complaint, suggesting that he was aware that this was an ongoing issue.

I'm sure that this is a prevalent practice across outlets and companies. I've written to BP about this malpractice, and am awaiting their response. If you've had a similar experience, write about it here, so that we can get the authorities to wake up to the situation. Until then, whenever you fill fuel, I'd suggest you focus on the display panel at all times, and avoid getting dragged into idle banter by attendants.

I have a friend who owns a petrol bunks and from what i've heard from him, such tricks are done by the employees and the owners can do very little to monitor such fraud.

True - but we can expect certain preventive procedures put in place by the bunks / companies - such as requiring customers to physically validate the start of the transaction by pressing the button.

why do u think u need to check if the meter is zero before you fill? why do they remind you -- 'saar zero saar'?

you really cant blame the bunks for this. if i had a bunk, i would do that to make extra money too. specially with people who like gossiping instead of watching what they're buying. what did you expect? they cheat even for smaller amounts, forget 1000 (which seems easier to cheat on).

need to keep your eyes open at all times kid.

I have to say that life on Bangalore roads hasn't been exactly pleasant for me either. Once an auto guy picked me up near the Domlur signal and dropped me off near the Dell office just coz some chicks wanted a ride to a place about a couple of blocks farther from my place. The dude just stopped the auto and said he ran outta petrol. I protested for a while and finally I had no choice but to get off. He hung around for a while and finally asked the two "shameless" females to hop on and went away. I say "shameless" coz those two b****** knew what was going and still got into the auto with a bloody grin on their faces. Pardon my language, but that's one incident that makes my blood boil. I had mentioned in on of my posts in my journal that looks like everyone is out to rip you off in whatever way possible in this city.

And dude, we come across each other so many times at so many forums. I gotta add you on as a friend mate! :|

Once i had been duped of a smaller amount of 50, i caught that guy thanks to simple maths in that situation..

one of my relatives had kerosene mixed petrol mixed in some petrol station in the heart of the city only!.. Thier car engine got screwed up during a crucial time and had to go for expensive alternatives. It was a serious fraud. They didnt complain, i dont know why..

Been there, been duped too, have become wiser.

BUT - calling Bangalore the 'city of thieves' is SO unfair!

Does this not happen in Chennai? Every freaking auto guy there is out to make money off you, not a little money, but double and triple the actual fare. True, common sense should see us through, but when you're new to the city it can be tough.

Does this not happen in Mumbai? There are pickpockets all over the place!

You think Delhi's better? At least we don't grill our kin in microwaves. Yeah, yeah it's petty crimes we're looking at...let's overlook this.

I've had experiences of the attendents trying to cheat me at almost every petrol bunk in Bangalore that I've tried in recent times (it used to be better, really). Maybe the TN registration in my car makes me a soft target.

One more thing you need to be careful about while fuelling is the fuel caps in cars. Apparently Zen fuel caps are stolen pretty frequently.

Have you tried the Shell outlets in Vittal Mallya road and Bommanahalli? They're probably the only bunks where you can afford not to be vigilant.

i think it is unfair to generalize using comments such as 'city of thieves' etc. about bangalore city. ofcourse, you got cheated here. ofcourse, you could have got cheated anywhere. you can get cheated in Bangalore, or Delhi ( as I have been ) or in Rome (as some of my friends have) and if you delve enough, you will find that everybody has a story about having been cheated somewhere that is not necessarily bangalore. we do understand that many of you are alone, far from home, lonely in a new place and everything seems exaggeratedly worse..but grow up, if you are grown up enough to be working away from home, you are grown up enough to think rationally.
having said that let me share my con story about a smooth talking rickshaw driver in mysore..he talked to me so nicely right through the trip and offered to change some large notes for me. i handed him the fare plus a fifty rupee note for changing. by the time i looked up from my bag, he said why have you given me only a tenner to change and i had no way of proving that it was a fifty as he showed me a ten. i am kicking myself that i didnt take the auto number and give a complaint..but at that moment i was frozen.
may i tell you that i had a similar experience at oslo (norway is supposed to be the safest country in the world) where i gave a 500 kroner note for a bun worth 7 kroner and the palestinian boy at the counter gave me change for a hundred. i was so sure it was a 500 because i had just brought it from the ATM but it was his word against mine and i lost 400 kroner. a friend had a similar experience in Italy. usha.

Misery loves company! This cheating dipstick seems to be throwing up more victims than I expected. All the more reason why we should get the petro companies to do something about it. Hell, why only petro - why not all the other irritating issues that we wish we could change. After all, there has to be a base level of trust and expectation from our everyday mundane interactions with the world.

Vigilance should, after all, be a habit, not an occupation!

Good for you, complaining and confronting the manager on this. I also hate being ripped off like this. I've never encountered this gas scam, but it doesn't surprise me too much. You do have to keep your wits about you. And not just in Bangalore, but like others have said, everywhere in the world.

I don't think Bangalore is full of thieves. As a foreigner, I've done quite a bit of travelling around India, and by far the rickshaw wallah's (and people in general) in Bangalore are amoung the most honest I've encountered in this country. I once left my mobile (a brand new, and not cheap one) in the back of a rickshaw and the guy personally returned it to me. I didn't expect to see it again, as it was likely two months salary for him. These kinds of scenarios completely outweigh any bad experiences I've ever had with the Rickshaws here.

I do have a suggestion for people though as far as improving the infrastructure, I think people should refuse to pay their taxes until improvements are made. Or can this even be done? One thing I have noticed improved a lot are the sidewalks in the downtown area. The Madras Sappers (is it them? or some other army guys) are doing a great job why can't they get them on the roads as well?

Sorry if this is a little off topic.

I certainly don't think Bangalore is a city of thieves and crime. On the contrary I find people here very kind and honest. The U.S. has a way more crime in a city close to the same size as this one. Los Angelos, for example has a pop. of 3.2 million and 658 murders! Yikes. I wonder what the stats are for Bangalore? how many people here? 7 million?

CHEATING of fuel quantity during dispensing by DISTRACTING my attention
[info]samblr
2007-03-13 03:14 pm UTC (link)
Happened at
The following IOCL Automobile Fuel sales Dispensing station located in the following location Hennur Main road, Lingarajapuram BANGALORE 560084 (Storage Licence No. MYS 4892) Today 13-3-2007 at around 17.30 hrs when i requested filling ten litres of extra mile diesel for my 4 wheeler to the dispensing boy (who claims his name is Venkatesh and works under one Nanju H who is the COCO Contractor) started to fill even before resetting the digital counter to zero, and when i tried to stop him, he diverted my attention by telling me to look behind at the front wheel of my car, and that it's air was fully out (which actually wasnt). I sensed immediately that this was a game of diverting my attention from his misdeed. Immediately he signalled his other collegues at the other dispensing machines, and two of them came to his rescue and supported his cheap action of pilferage/cheating or whatever you can match a name for it. Soon after that, though i knew that the counter was running only from 06.00 ltrs onwards and practically i got only 4 litres filled in my tank. I requested them a bill/receipt immediately for what i had paid in cash, but they blankly refused to give me a bill. instead one of the delivery boys there took a peice of soiled paper/looks like toilet paper i suppose, and place the seal of one Mr. Nanju H. AND WROTE THE AMOUNT RS. 357.50 AND SIGNED IT HIMSELF and fling it to me. They claim that thier bill book is over long back, and these toilet paper bits with seal on it is what they issue for receipts.
Lets see how long these guys would go on cheating like this... IOCL claims to have a vigilance complaint site, but the page doesnt seem to work for ages. Hats off INDIAN oil Corporation.

This scam is going too far and something has to be done and thats why people share these stories to make others aware of this.

My vehicle is TN registration and Im usually alone in the vehicle when filling petrol..an easy prey for the bunk guys.

I ask for 500 rs worth of petrol.

The guy pumps in for Rs 100 as though he didnt hear right.

When I said 500 he switches off the pump but does not reset to 0 and checks with the guy who collects the cash.

That guy tries to distract you in a number of ways :
Some common distractions :

1. Are you using a petro card
2. If u give another 10 Rs will round it off to XX litres.
3. Looks like there is less air in yuor front tire.
4. Some new scheme

While you are distracted the guy continues to fill gas and fills 400 Rs only.
Now he says he put 100 rs first, but he did not reset it to 0 and continued from where he left off this filling for only Rs 400/-.

Easy 100 Rs to share between both the guys.

PLEASE BE WARNED ABOUT THIS & SPREAD AWARENESS AMONG ALL CAR USERS WOMEN ARE ALSO AN EASY TARGET.

I wouldnt mind getting another 100 Rs woth of fuel to pur on thse bastards and burn them alive.

BP Advaitha petrol pump near Udupi Garden Restaurant between Silk Board and Jayadeva is a big cheat. Don't go by its looks they are big time cheaters.
I asked for diesel worth Rs. 500. The attendant filled up only Rs. 100. noticing that I told him to fill for Rs. 500 but by that time he is done with 100 so the attender said he will fill up for remaining Rs. 400…that is when he did a trick of as though he is resetting by playing games of hurry burry and continuing to fill and when he is done for Rs. 400 he asked for 500 (100+400) but in reality he only filed for 100+300 as he is not really resetted the machine to zero even though it appears as he reset. I have realised this little late after paying 500 and then asked for explanation for it and he is not ready to listen and says he reset it to zero infront of me. I knew I got cheated.
Note: Any time they put the petrol/diesel for the amount less than what you have asked for or tried to distract then its for sure that they will be cheating.

1. Make it practice that you avoid going to petrol pumps when ur in a hurry. When ur in hurry they can easliy divert your attention and cheat you.
2. Whenever i go for re-filling i make a point to see that i wont even take the money from my pocket till they fill, what ever i have requested. they will try to ask for money once they start filling but do not take out. They will frown some times but maintain ur temperment.
3. Also make sure that you have kept ready the required amount which needs to be given after filling. Avoid searching for money when ur in the filling station.
4. Get the fuel filled in terms of 50rs or 100rs. Suppose u feel u need to fill

Another alternative you can adopt is to go to Shell and get this filled. In my past 3 years, I have not had single issue with Shell-Yeswantpur or Shell-Mysore Road or Shell-Lavelle Road bunks. They adopt good practices. You may need to drive a bit to reach this for people who do not have Shell bunks nearby, but I felt very confident each time I fill. I sit in my vehicle and keep reading the meter till it gets filled. Nobody will speak for any "marketing" stuff. The only extra thing they do is to clean the windshield just to promote.

I had the same experience of 50 + 150 in a HP petrol pump, in Near Hotel Pai Comforts Jayanagar.
Thoug it was a Dealer Pump not a company owned pump, but how many company owned pumps do you find it anyways!!!!
